UNIT I: INTRODUCTION TO AUTOCAD

Charles Babbage develop the concept of computer in 1883 and this leads to the rapid
development of IC Chips and make it possible to create software and programs that could make
things efficient and convenient. Ivan Sutherland invented the first CAD demon which is the
SKETCHPAD. A year later, IBM produced the first commercial CAD System. With the
advancement of technology and powerful computers, many changes took place since then.
CAD may be used to design curves and figures in two-dimensional (2D) space; or curves,
surfaces, and solids in three-dimensional (3D) space. CAD is an important industrial art
extensively used in many applications, including automotive, shipbuilding, and aerospace
industries; industrial and architectural design; prosthetics; and many more. CAD is also widely
used to produce computer animation for special effects in movies, advertising, and technical
manuals.
The program AutoCAD can easily finish-up a week program of a manual drafting in just a
day, productivity, competitively and conveniently wise. The AutoCAD is preferred program for
today’s Modern Construction Firms. The ability of this program enables engineers and
architects to produce, revise, store and transmit original drawing into a more precise, efficient
and accurate set of drawings. The fact does not mean that AutoCAD is a difficult program to
learn or to master. It is, however, a complex program offering numerous methods of
accomplishing the same task.
The features or can was very amazing. It was like an electronic-paper with drawing tools
which is analogous to manual drafting. It is valuable and more efficient in modifying drawings.
Editing in AutoCAD is much efficient and faster than manual drawing.
With this program it is now possible to do all drawing including 2-dimensional (2D) or 3-
dimensional (3D), solid modeling, complex engineering analysis even production. New
technologies are constantly invented to enhance the program which makes the process quicker,
more versatile and more powerful. In the other hand, to use to program AutoCAD effectively,
you must have an understanding of how the commands operate. This understanding will enable
you to develop methods for accomplishing your drawing tasks.

Importance of AutoCAD
AutoCAD offers a lot of opportunities and advantages as compared to other means of
drafting and drawing. Users are benefited through the use of the application/program
regardless if you are new or expert the utilization of AutoCAD. Below are some of the benefits
that AutoCAD offers.
1. Easier creation and correction
Working detailed drawings may be created more quickly and making changes or revision
is more efficient than correcting drawing made manually.
2. Better visualization of drawing
Many systems allow different viewing of an object at the same time.
3. Database of Drawing Aids
Design and symbols can be stored for easy recall and use.
4. Increased Accuracy
Using the computer, the drawing can be produced with more accuracy.
5. Improved filing
Drawings can be more conveniently filed
6. Quick design analysis
7. Simulation and testing
