PROJECT PROPOSAL
II. Introduction/Rationale
Vermicast production is one of the viable sources of organic fertilizers as promoted by the
Organic Agriculture Program implemented by the Department of Agriculture supported by the Philippine
Organic Agriculture Act of 2010 or RA 10068. Essentially, the program aims to promote, propagate,
further develop and implement the practice of Organic Agriculture in the Philippines towards a
competitive and sustainable OA industry to contribute to better farm incomes and sustainable
livelihood; Improved health; Environmental protection; Disaster risk reduction and resilience to Climate
Change. Hence, the availability of vermicasts in Negros Oriental is very limited.
During the height of the pandemic last year (2020), our father whom the head of our family who
was the breadwinner, worked with the Foundation University Farm as Crop Maintenance/Driver,
discharged from work permanently because the institution seriously affected and could not sustained
retain their employees anymore. In order to get through with the crisis due to pandemic, we used what
we learned in the previous work of my father in the farm which is organic farming specifically
Vermicomposting. Using the ample space available in our backyard and available farm waste materials
(animal manure, rice straws, mudpress, slurry) from the nearby farms with the help of our siblings, we
were able to produce vermicasts around two (2) tons per month or equivalent of 40bags (50kg/bag).
Through the help of online selling facilitated by the farmers cooperative in Amlan, we were able to sell
at P300.00 per bag as retail price, bulk buyers can avail a discount up to 20%. We generated around
9,000 to 12,000 monthly gross incomes out from vermicast and other vegetable products. We were
able to support the family’s daily needs.
Today, as we continue to maintain the quality and increase the volume of production to cater
the needs of the market which is eventually developed, we need to do expansion of the vermi-culture
housing. To maximize the limited space in our backyard, we will be using the VERTICAL COMPOSTING
SYSTEM. However, the cost of the construction of the structure would be much higher, however it is
more feasible and sustainable. It will increase the production from 2 tons to 6 tons per month (300%)
with an estimated lifespan of 10 to 15 years.
Vermicompost teas (VCT) are documented to increase plant growth and yield and reduce plant
fungal and bacterial diseases and nematode infestation in the soil (Selvaraj, Abira, 2011). According to
the author from University of California Riverside conducting a thesis in titled “Effect of Vermicompost
Tea on the Growth and Yield of Tomato Plants and Suppression of Root Knot Nematode in the Soil” in
completion of the course Master of Science in Plant Biology. In view, we decided to incorporate the
vermi-tea (VCT) catcher in the VERTICAL VERMI-CULTURE PRODUCTION HOUSING as additional benefit
with the design.
We are glad to avail the financial assistance from the ATI RTC 7 to the 4-H Club AFY to help in
the construction of the proposed expansion of vermi-culture housing to realize our specific objectives as
follows:
2. Encourage the The Dreamers 4-H Club members in Jugno, Amlan to engage in agriculture production
and activities.
General Objectives
Project Description:
Project Beneficiaries :
Indirect – Farmer/customers
Project Output
At the end of the project duration of three (3) months the finished construction of 1 unit 10ft x
8ft x 8ft VERTICAL VERMI-CULTURE with VCT CATCHER will be ready for production operation. After one
and a half month or 45days (production cycle) will produce approximately 120bags (50kgs) of
vermicasts/vermicompost.
Marketing Aspect:
As to the economic impact of the project to the proponent’s family and The Dreamers 4-H Club
members, it initially shows that it will help increase their family income as well as to the club members
and encourage them to participate in the agricultural production or activities. Obtaining an income will
motivate them and eventually develop the passion in agriculture or even their parents and other family
members and neighbors.
