COVID-19 originated in Wuhan, China in December 2019. It is caused by a novel coronavirus called SARS-CoV-2 that causes respiratory illness ranging from a mild cough to pneumonia. Common symptoms include fever, dry cough and tiredness. The virus has since spread globally, infecting over 157 million people worldwide as of May 2021. India has also experienced a devastating second wave of COVID-19 infections, reporting over 21 million cases and 238,000 deaths so far.

WHAT IS COVID-19?

COVID-19 (Corona viruses) (CoV)


are a large family of viruses that
cause illness ranging from the
common cold to more severe
diseases such as Middle East
Respiratory Syndrome and
Severe Acute Respiratory
Syndrome (SARS-CoV). A novel
corona virus (nCoV) is a new
strain that has not been
previously identified in humans.
 Most people infected with the COVID-19 virus
will experience mild to moderate respiratory
illness.
 Common signs of infection include respiratory
symptoms, fever, cough, shortness of breath
WHAT IS IT and breathing difficulties. In more severe cases,
infection can cause pneumonia, severe acute
CAUSING? respiratory syndrome and even death.
 Older people, and those with underlying
medical problems like cardiovascular disease,
diabetes, chronic respiratory disease, and
cancer are more likely to develop serious
illness.
Most common symptoms:
 Fever
 Dry cough
 Tiredness

 Aches and pains

 Loss of taste or smell
 A rash on skin, or discoloration of fingers or toes
WHAT IS THE ORIGIN OF COVID-19?

Covid-19 was first isolated


from three people with
pneumonia connected to the
cluster of acute respiratory
illness cases in Wuhan, China in
December 2019 .
All structural features of the
novel SARS-CoV-2 virus particle
occur in related corona viruses
in nature.
PREVENTION

The best way to prevent and slow down transmission is to be well informed
about the COVID-19 virus, the disease it causes and how it spreads. Protect
yourself and others from infection by washing your hands or using an alcohol-
based rub frequently and not touching your face.
GLOBAL SPREAD

The coronavirus pandemic has


sickened more than 157,284,000
people, according to official
counts. As of 9th May, 2021, at
least 3,276,900 people have died
from coronavirus. The pandemic
has recently been affecting a lot
more people due to a mutation
in the virus. This has brought a
second wave of covid 19 in the
South-East Asian region.
This map shows the average
daily cases per 100,000
people in the past week. In
this map we can clearly see
that the virus has grown a lot
more in the months of April
and May.
SPREAD IN INDIA

As of India, it is not going on


very well. There have been at
least 21,892,600 confirmed
cases of the coronavirus in
India, according to the Ministry
of Health and Welfare. As of
Sunday morning, 238,270
people had died. Experts say
that the death count far
exceeds official figures.
The pandemic has recently been
affecting a lot more people due
to a mutation in the virus. This
has brought a second wave of
covid 19 in India and is causing
lots of disruption in important
times. The spread has received a
boost due to lack of precautions
taken by the people as well as
tense political situation due to
election in multiple states in the
country. This image shows the

If COVID-19 is spreading in your community, stay safe by taking some
simple precautions, such as physical distancing, wearing a mask,
keeping rooms well ventilated, avoiding crowds, cleaning your hands,
and coughing into a bent elbow or tissue.
