Midterm exam-II Semester. Highway

This document outlines a midterm exam for a Highway Engineering course. It includes 4 questions that assess key highway concepts: 1. Define highway engineering terms and describe highway cross section elements. 2. Calculate stopping sight distances and choose the correct sight distance values for different highway design speeds and conditions. 3. Determine stationing, elevations, and lengths for vertical curve problems. 4. Calculate minimum radius of curvature and maximum superelevation rate for a highway with a 100 km/h design speed.

Time of exam: 2 hours
Q1/ Answer the followings (25 Marks)
1- Define A. Sight distance B. Gradient C. Shoulder D. Highway E. Transportation (15 Marks)
2- Describe ten points of elements highway cross sections (10 Marks)
Q2/ Choose the correct answer (25 Marks)
1- Calculate the stopping sight distance for a road having a design speed of 80 kph and the break
coefficient is 60%. Note: when break efficiency is given, the coefficient of friction is not taken into
account.
a) 98.75 m, b) 98.58 m, c) 97.60 m
2- Find the Stopping Sight Distance of a roadway with: Design speed = 40 mph, Driver reaction time =
2 seconds, Grade = 0% and Deceleration rate = 11.2 ft/s².
a) 271 ft, b) 270 ft, c) 269 ft
3- A driver with a 2.5-second reaction time is travelling at 65 miles per hour up a 2% grade. Assuming
AASHTO standard values for all other information, what distance will be required for the driver to
come to a complete stop if an obstruction enters his or her field of vision?
a) 622 ft, b) 620 ft, c) 618 ft
4- Anew highway on rural terrain is being build with a design speed 94.5 km/h. The passing sight
distance is:
a) 538 m, b) 583 m, c) 385 m
5- A roadway has a design speed 99.8 km/h. the passing sight distance is:
a) 644 m, b) 446 m, c) 464 m

Q3/ Answer the followings (25 Marks)

00 and elevation 1322 ft., the initial grade ascending by and the final grade descending by .
Determine the elevation and stationing of the PVC, PVT and high point by US customary unit.
2- A vertical summit curve is to be designed when two grades - and + meet on highway, the SSD
required is 204.36 m. Determine the minimum length of vertical curve. (10 Marks)

Q4/ Answer the followings: (25 Marks)

What is the minimum radius of curvature allowable for a roadway with a 100 km/h design speed,
assuming that the maximum allowable superelevation rate is 0.12? What is the actual maximum
superelevation rate allowable under AASHTO recommended standards for a 100 km/h design speed, if
the value of f is the maximum allowed by AASHTO for this speed? Round the answer down to the
nearest whole percent
