In this test, you will apply what you have learned in the unit.

Please answer the questions

below. Submit the test to your teacher when you are done.

Question 1: Hydrocarbons (12 points)

A. Draw the structural model for butane (using C and H). (6 points)
B. Draw the stick (or skeletal) model for 3-hexyne. (4 points)

C. The molecule below is trans-2-pentene. Draw a stereoisomer of this molecule. (2 points)

Question 2: Functional Groups (6 points)

A. Methanoic acid is the simplest carboxylic acid molecule. It has one carbon atom. Draw
the structural model for methanoic acid (using C and H). (3 points)
B. Methanal is the simplest aldehyde, with one carbon atom. Draw the structural model for
methanal (using C and H). (3 points)
Question 3: Biological Molecules (8 points)

A. How is a protein different from a polypeptide? (3 points)

A polypeptide is a long chain of monomers. This chain is what is used to make proteins,
which then carry out special functions in the body.

B. The molecule shown below has three fatty-acid chains attached to it.

i. What type of biological macromolecule is this? (2 points)

This is a lipid

ii. State and explain whether this is a saturated or unsaturated molecule. (3 points)
This is a saturated molecule. In the model, there are only single bonds holding
the carbon atoms together, meaning the maximum number of hydrogen atoms are in the
molecule.

Question 4: Biological Molecules (5 points)

A. Pepsin is an enzyme used by the human body to break down food in the stomach.

i. Explain, in terms of a chemical reaction, how pepsin helps a person. (3 points)

Pepsin speeds up the reaction rate by breaking down certain types of food in the
body.

ii. What are the building blocks of the pepsin macromolecule? (2 points)

Pepsin is an enzyme, which are proteins. Just like all proteins, this means that
pepsin is made of several amino acids bonded together.

Question 5: Energy Sources (12 points)

A. There are many ways to produce electricity. List two energy sources that generate
electricity via a chemical reaction, and explain what kind of reaction each uses. (6 points)

Two energy sources that generate electricity via chemical reactions are voltaic cells and
electrolytic cells. Voltaic cells use spontaneous reactions to generate electricity, while
electrolytic cells use nonspontaneous reactions to generate electricity.

B. Ethane is a common component of energy sources. Write the chemical formula for
ethane. (2 points)

C2H6

C. Write and balance the chemical equation for the combustion reaction of ethane. (4
points)

2C2H6 + 7O2 = 4CO2 + 6H2O

Question 6: Energy Use (8 points)

A. The electricity supply of a certain U.S. state needs to be increased. The state is very

cloudy and rainy from October to April. There are several large rivers, and there are almost

no areas with high winds due to heavy forest cover. Several sources of underground heat are

available. The state also has a surplus of organic waste.

i. Name two renewable energy sources, and state and explain whether or not the state
should use them based on the description above. (6 points)
The first option is hydroelectric mills. This would be efficient and utilize the large
rivers well, meaning it would be a good choice for the state to use. A second option is
biomass. It would take care of the surplus of organic waste, but would also pollute the
atmosphere more. It wouldn’t be a bad option, but it would ultimately depend on the state’s
priorities.

ii. If the state wants to minimize environmental damage, what energy sources should it

consider using? Explain your position. (2 points)

The best option would be geothermal. Although they would require a bit of
drilling, out of all the options, this is the least impactful on the environment. Solar panels and
wind power wouldn’t be very effective based on the location of the state, and biomass would
contribute to atmospheric pollution. Hydroelectric mills would require dams to be constructed
which could severely damage the ecosystems of the rivers. Geothermal would produce the least
amount of environmental damage and would be a stable source of energy for the state.
