Perception >> selecting what i want to pay attention to and attaching meaning to it
we encounter multiple different events but we dont pay attention to
everything
brain decides which info we will pay attention and which ones we will
ignore
Selectively paying attention to things or info and attaching meaning
to it.

** each of our barins are unique . so perception will vary from invidual to
invidual . it can match
but most often than not it is different. What i see and percieve will be
considered true for me

** Clash of opnions occur when perceptions dont match

** 3 things :Interests , Needs , Expections guide the brain's decisions
** NEEDS : you pay more attention to things which meet your bilogical or
psychological needs
what is relevant to me .suppose teacher is giving lecture im showing boredom but
suddenly
he tells something that meets my need then i will pay attention

** INTERESTS : background music we dont pay that attention . but if my fav band is
playing
i will pay more attention . people talking in the background - i wont pay that
much of an attention
but if we find out that their topic pertain to interest we pay more attention to
that ;
our brain selects those info and percieves it.

** INDIVIDUAl EXPECTIONS : we pay more attention to things we expect to see.

suppose i didnt expect this to happen so i ignore it

** Brain Also ORGANIZES information. when the info is complex ; brain simplifies
that info.
ORGANIZING IS BASED ON 1) SIMPLICITY 2)PATTERN
** simplify : for ex: when see a person we percieve that person according to thier
clothing,
hairstyle , and other physical appearance. it was harder to perceieve that person
as whole ;
so brain observers some small parts and perceives based on it

** Patterns : a set of characteristic to differentiate something from others . ex :

the pattern
of behaviour of someone ; then we can perceieve that person

** THE PERCEPTION OF SELF : include 2 things -- 1. Self concept ; 2. self esteem.

This two have the greates impact on communication process performance

1. Self-concept : it is your self-identity ; your idea of yourself as a person ;

the mental image i have of myself ; how i describe moyself ; my skills , my
knoledge ,
my personality traits . THE IDEA THAT I HAVE ABOUT MYSELF. OBJECTIVE VIEW WITHOUT
SUBJECTIVE OPINION
without any judgement
2. Self-esteem : it is my judgement about myself. It is the subjective opinion
myself
The evaluation of my self-concept ; the evaaluation of my skills , my personality
traits ; things im good at bad at ;
my personal worthiness ; when im judging myself based on these things and forming
an opinion
that is my self-esteem

I can be good at daning ; but i dont value that characterristic that much ;
so i will have a positive self-concept but a negative/low self-esteem
I can be bad at painting ; but i dont valye that charactertic
so i will have a negative self-concept but a positive esteem

how to form self-concept :

1. personal experience regarding my skills my abiloties , my knowledghe ,
charactristric , first hand experiences
ex : in a pub speaking class in a speech i did bad and people laughed at me ; it
will form a negative self-concept that im not good at
speaking in public
but if a teacher gives u applaud you will have a positive self-concept

**So ; 2.reactions and responses from other shapes up your self-concept

other people's reactions strengtens our knoledge about ourselfs
**we end up knowing about ourselves through others.

**3.IDEAL SELF CONCEPT : The person who i want to be

the ideal picture , the perfect person i would like to be ; i dream of becoming
**It also shapes up my self concept
**When i understand i cant meet some qualities i want to pocess then my self
concept becomes
a bit negative
** ideal self concepts is developed by experiencing movies , media content etc

**SELF Esteem: the value we place on things.

>> good in math .... my culture tells me its a valuable train then i will have a
high self
esteem
>> high self-esteem requies to have a characterisc and u view that characterisctic
important and valuable

>> a person with high- self esteem ; postive self image will make me confident
>> a person with low- self esteem ; negative self image will make nervous public
speaker

>> high self esteem improves my communacation process

this is how self concept and self esteem directly influences communication process
perfomance

########

Gender and culture influences the self-perceptionm

Culture : individualist culture ; colectivist culture

**individualist culture :(North american countries) you put a lot of importance on

yourself , your self concept
you tend to think about yourself first ; when you decide somwthing you dont
discuss with your family
you only depend on your persona choices . my life decisions are based on my
perception of what is good
for myself

** Collectivist culture : You give more importance to the group as a whole

opinions of my family members influence my life decisions. What is good for me or
bad for me
is viewed in relation to what is good for the group and what is bad for the group
as well.
u place the group above youself as a person.

so in a individualist cultute you will give more importance on improving yourself

in a collectivist culture you will give more impportance on group harmony about
self-esteem.

GENDER : for ex : A man good with kids . cultures tell is a feminice trait. so
the man will thing it doenst matter , so he will have a low self esteem.
culture tells having a good job , salary is valued for man

NOW

### Self-concept is not a rigid characteristocs . They can be changed through new
experiences
and new feedbacks and reactions from others which contradicts the precivious
reactions.
