SPEAR Project Assistant for NTT area

About EOCRU
The Eijkman-Oxford Clinical Research Unit (EOCRU) opened in 2008 with the signing of a
memorandum of understanding between the Eijkman Institute for Molecular Biology and the
University of Oxford, expressing the will to conduct collaborative research on infectious
diseases impacting the health of Indonesians and residents of other Southeast Asian
nations. In 2012, the University of Oxford also signed a memorandum of understanding with
the Faculty of Medicine Universitas Indonesia. In conducting the work especially in
Indonesia, EOCRU is assisted by Alliance for Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Threats
in Asia Foundation (ALERTAsia), a local foundation assists in research grant management
and capacity building for local researchers. EOCRU is part of the Oxford Tropical Network,
under the auspices of the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit (OUCRU-Vietnam).
EOCRU focuses on opportunities to improve the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of
infectious disease by conducting clinical trials that may directly impact practice and improve
the health outcomes of Indonesians. EOCRU is also committed to supporting young
Indonesian talents in diverse ways, including competitive fellowships, direct academic
support and deliberate professional development. In conducting the work in Indonesia,
EOCRU is assisted by Alliance for Emerging and Re-emerging Disease Threats in Asia
Foundation (ALERTAsia), a local foundation assisting in research grant management and
capacity building for local researchers.

The global COVID-19/SARS-CoV-2 pandemic impacts on Indonesia, with no sign of a

slowing epidemic. EOCRU in Indonesia, with its sister Units in Vietnam and Nepal, all part of
the Oxford University Clinical Research Unit Vietnam is conducting a social science and
participatory engagement project with the goal of exploring the experiences and impact of
COVID-19 on health-related workers and vulnerable communities, in order to inform
guidance on strengthening support for health workers and improving access to public health
measures for the most vulnerable populations in our settings. The project aims to i) Identify
and describe the experiences and perceptions of HCWs, CHWs and other healthcare staff
during/after the COVID-19 pandemic; ii) Explore the impact of the COVID-19 outbreak on
vulnerable communities; iii) Identify mis-information circulating within these populations and
co-design targeted evidenced-based public engagement. To date, Vietnam, Indonesia and
Nepal have had very different experiences of the COVID-19 epidemic, and within these
countries experiences and impact of COVID-19 are likely quite different for communities,
health care workers (HCWs) and community health workers (CHWs). Engaging with
communities across a range of settings will allow us to compare findings and translate
knowledge about factors associated with risk and resilience.
