EXOGENOUS

EXOGENOUS PROCESS

-Occurs on or near the surface of

Earth.
-Driven by gravity, water, wind and
organisms.
DEGRADATION PROCESSES:
WEATHERING,
MASS WASTING,
EROSION AND
SEDIMENTATION
 Physical or Mechanical Weathering
 Breaking down of rocks due to weather
elements:
high temperatures, extreme cold
 Chemical Weathering
 decomposes rocks through a chemical change in its
minerals
Oxidation – important in iron-
rich rocks – reddish coloration
like rust
Hydrolysis – igneous rocks
have much silica which readily
combines with water
EROSION

-Process by which Earth’s

surface is sworn away by wind,
water or ice .
Triggers of Erosion
• rainfall
• surface runoff
• flowing rivers
• seawater intrusion
• flooding
• freezing and thawing
• hurricane and wind
• human activities
MASSWASTING
- Movement of large masses of
materials (rocks, debris, soil and
mud) down a slope or a steep-
sided hill or mountain due to the
pull of gravity.
Monterey Park Debris Flow, 1980
SEDIMENTATION
- Accumulation of materials such as soil,
rock fragments and soil particles
settling on the ground. Usually occurs in
streams and sea erosion.
PROCESSES ON EARTH
- takes place within the interior layer of Earth.

a. Magmatism : magma is generated and develops into

igneous
b. Volcanism: Volcanic eruptions  Volcanoes
c. Metamorphism : changing of materials that make up
a rock
• magma is very hot and is constantly moved
by the internal heat that reaches the mantle
of the Earth through convection flow.
• magma forms when rocks reach
temperatures between 800 – 1200 degree
Celsius.
• process when magma tries to escape from
the source through openings such as
volcanoes or existing cracks on the
ground
• magma comes out with extreme heat and
pressure and may cause destructive
explosions
• the process of changing the
materials that make up a rock
• chemical components and geological
characteristics of rocks change due to
heat, fluids and pressure
Two Main Categories of
Igneous Rocks
The two main categories of igneous rocks are
extrusive and intrusive.

Extrusive rocks are formed on the surface of the

Earth from lava, which is magma that has emerged
from underground.

Intrusive rocks are formed from magma that cools

and solidifies within the crust of the planet.
Like the stress along boundaries,
difficulties in life are also encountered.
Just keep moving forward. We may not
know but maybe these difficulties may
result in something beautiful in the
future.
