The information is incorporated into a unique chart We call a LoaJMAPr., which displays pressure and velocity levels. The 4 LLoadMAP». lists maximum loads that produce the ANSUSAAMI* (American National Standards Insiute/Sporting Arms and Ammunition ‘Manufacturers Institute) MAP** (Maximum Average Pressure) in our test, gun under laboratory controlled conditions. The LoadMAPo. data was developed using ammunition loaded and fired in accordance with ANSU/SAAMI specifications and procedures from the Voluntary Industry Performance Standards for Pressure and Velocity of Centerfire Pistol and Revolver Ammunition for the Use of Commercial Manufacturers, ©1993. ‘The ammunition was tested for pressure and velocity in a. Universal Receiver Test Barrel using piezo-lectric conformal transducers and the Ochier System 83 pressure recording system, ‘The current industry standard is to measure and list pressure in pounds per square inch (psi) using piezo-electric transducers. Before Piczo-clectric transducers, pressures. Were measured using the copper rusher method and expressed as Copper Units of Pressure, (CUP), Many manuals list pressures in C.U.P.” When comparing load data from, ‘other sources. itis important to note that thee is no method of conversion ‘from CU to psi, [FANST- ANSI is the agency responsible Tor the Wlenticaton of aS lale. consistent set of voluntary standards called American National [Standards. Anatlas contains road maps for driving: think ofthis as an atlas with, LoadMAPsw fr reloading, The LoadMAPy. is designed with easy load- ing in mind. As in driving, there ae signs and colors for which to watch. ‘The LoadMAP, is colored like a traffic signal. The GREEN means GO, the YELLOW means proceed with CAUTION and the RED bars atthe top and bottom mean STOP. The colors change as the propellant charge increases and the pressure rises. Always watch for signs of excessive pres sure on the tp up the LoadMAPy. The yellow yield sign indicates that extra caution should be exercised in the yellow and red zones. Watch {Your cartridge cases for signs of excessive pressure and be prepared 10 Stop and go back at any time. The stop sign and the STOP bars atthe top| land the bottom of the chart mean exactly that,— STOP! Going through the stop can be very dangerous. ‘The LoadMAPr, has three columns. The left column shows the pro- pellant charge in grains, the middle column shows the approximate pressure in pounds per square inc (psi) and the right column shows the approximate velocity in feet per second (fps). Your actual pressures and velocities willbe different from those indicated by the LoadMAPr. The Homady FMJ/RN dotted black line across the Load MAP. indicates 95% of SAAMI MAP. Using the LoadMAP,. Select a propellant charge from within the ‘start ere’ area, Load and fire the cartridges as. you. normally ‘would and watch for signs of excessive pressure as detailed in the next section. ‘When working up aload you may increase the propellant charge in the fren zone faster than you ean in the yellow zone or te red zone. A normal {Ea grain in the yellow red_zone, If, at any time, excessive pressure signs are observed, STOP. Reduce your load to a level where excessive pressure signs are not ‘observed. Consider this the maximum ‘safe load for your firearm under those conditions in which the ammunition ‘was loaded, stored and fired. The most accurate loads are often found below the maximum velocity. STOP: The top is ANSU/SAAMI MAP. Do not load above the maxi= ‘mum or below the minimum charges shown in the LoadMAP 5Factors That Affect Pressure Many factors affect the pressure and velocity a cartidge generates ‘when fired. Any of these factors could result in excessive pressure levels being reached at lower propellant charge weights than occurred in ou lab- oratory testing. Some of the more important factors are: The Barrel and Chamber ‘The individual firearm can cause the pressure to be different ‘Barrels made by the same gunsmith, with the same reamer, fom the same barrel stock, on the same day, in the same caliber will develop different pressures using the same loads * Hore condition Pressures will normally be lower in a worn barrel than ina new har- rel. As the lands are wom down, especially in the theoat area, less pressure is required to move the bullet through the bore. Propellant 1nd bullet fouling will cause an increase in pressure, A clean barrel develops less pressure than a disty barrel, See also the Jacket ardness section on the next page + Bore diameter Some firearms with the same chambering may have different bore diameters, e.., the 7.62 x 39 may have a 308 oF 311 bore. Fring a 311 bullet through a 308 bore might develop a higher pressure ‘while firing 4.308 bullet through a3 bore might develop a lower pressure + Chamber condition and dimension ‘Anything that increases or decreases the total chamber capacity can affect the pressure. Some examples are: an oversize or undersize ‘chamber, neck diameter, propellant residue, headspace, cleaning sol vents, picces of cleaning patches, rusty or pied walls. Any inrease in chamber size could decrease pressure and any decrease in cham ber size could increase pressure. Individual Cartridge Components All the various factors involving carvidge components have an impact onthe presse developed when the primer ignites the propellant. Ignition changes the propellant fom a solid into a rapidly expanding gas “The expansion ofthe gas exeates the pressure to propel the blll through the bore. Each factor contibutes ta the creation of pressure. In some instances, the pressure may exceed the safety Tims of the cartidge ease or the fram, ‘Changi one or more ofthe caridge components wil create dit ferent prsus and vletes iss came Tcrefre ws encour ‘ge ou to experiment wid diferent bullets and propellants so that loads an be ullored for specific necds and shooting conditions. With any change in components, manufacturer or lot number, You should start Twain haar eae ad wrk teed up unl the ds pr Bullet + Bearing surface The bearing surface is the part of the bullet that contacts the lands and grooves of the bore and creates friction. A longer beating sur- face generally develops higher pressure than a short bearing sueface. + Crimp tightness The crimp tightness affects how much pressure is required to get the bullet stared into the bore. 4 tighter crimp holds the bullet longer causing the pressure to increase before the bullet leaves the cartridge ease mouth. Some firearms may require a tighter crimp, i. tubular ‘magazines, to keep the bullet ftom being pushed into the cartridge ease by other cartridges during recoil + Diameter ‘A bullet with a diameter smaller than the bore diameter may not sel the bore. Ths allows gases to escape around the bullet resulting in lower pressures. bullet with a larger diameter will cause the pres- sure to increase asthe bullet is swaged down to fit in the bore. Somebullet diameters may be different from the cartridge name ie. the 303 British has @ nominal bullet diameter of 312". Jacket hardness Jacket hardness dictates how easily the jacket will be engraved by ‘the rifling in the bare. A soft jacket will normally develop tower pressure than a hard jacket. Soft jackets may leave copper deposits in the bore which can cause the pressure to increase rapidly to a potentially dangerous level. The frst few shots may have a lower Pressure than hard jackets but the pressure ean inerease with addi- tional shots, Soft jackets require more frequent cleaning. Seating depth ‘Seating the bullet deeper reduces the interior dimensions of the ear- ttidge, normally increasing the pressure. Seating the bullet out until it contacts the rifling causes an initial increase in pressure. Weight ‘A heavier bullet develops higher pressure than a lighter ballet ‘the same propellant charge. Cartridge Case Capacit ‘Smaller cartridge case capacity allows less room forthe gases 10 expand, which results in higher pressure. Length “A cartridge case that s too long may go to far into the that of the ‘chamber If this happens, the mouth of the cartridge case will hold the bullet very tightly and the pressure will increase dramatically before the bullet is released. [Number of times the eartridge ease has been fired Each time the cartridge case is fred it lengthens and expands. Cartridge ease material moves forward with each firing, The car- tridge case neck gets thicker with each firing. A thicker neck will hold the bullet tighter causing an increase in pressure + Resizing ofthe cartridge ease ‘When the cartridge cas i ul-length resized, the shoulders pushed back. Excessive resizing will cause the interior dimensions 10 tecome stale This will eause an increase in pressure and may treat excessive headspace. The caridge ease maY als split or sep- arse upon fig. + Wal thicknes/Manufacturer “Athicker cartridge case wal reduces care case capacity. Allcar- thdge case manufacturers have differen dimension they work to {Thos each brand wll have diferent capctics. Miltary cartidge aes fave thicker walle esling ma lower care axe capt) than commercial canridge cases I you ae unsre of your carne ref asme is mii st loaing st heart ere ea fd expect to reach yout maximum safe pressure at a lower propel inte caege weight han wth commercial cards cases Propellant + Ponder Charge ‘Some Charts indicate a maximum pressure below the SAAMI MAP. In our testing one tenth grain more powder, than the maximum charge shown, exceeded the Maximum Average pressure allowed. Do not load above the maximum charge shown, + Burn rate ‘All propellants are coated with a deterrent to contol their burn rae Different propellant types have Various shapes and deterrent cost- ings producing different burn rates. A faster bur rate will enerate pressure faster than a slower burn rate. faster bum rate will require less propellant to attain maximum pressure, + Load density “This refers to how full the cartridge case is by volume of propellant. ‘The fuller the cartridge case, the higher the load density, A slower burning propellant will have a higher load density. A higher load 7density will give a more consistent ignition and a more consistent pressure. Propellant granule shape will affect the load density, The smaller the granule the more dense the load willbe. Always refer to the LoadMAP forthe propellant charge weight of your specific bul. Jet and propellant combination Primer + Cup ‘The cup thickness and hardness varies between type and manufic~ turer. soft cup will show signs of excessive pressure easier than a hard o thick cup. + Primer Mash ‘The quantity and type of primer mix varies from lotto lot and man- ‘ufacturer to manufacturer. A stronger, hotter flash may create a higher peak pressure Component Lots + Variations Ballet weight and shape, cate case dimensions, propellant den- sty, propeant burn rate and primer Mash all vary from Io to lot With any change in componems, manufacturer or fot number, you should start fading atthe “start here" are and work the load up unt the desired performance i achieved. Atmospheric Conditions leis important to understand how changes inthe shooting and load- ing environments affect pressures. A cartridge loaded at 950 feet above sea level, at $0 degrees Fahrenheit, and 85% relative humility will nor- rally develop lower pressures when fired at 3000 feet above sea level, at {60 degrees Fahrenheit and 40% relative humidity. An increase in temper- ature ora decrease in relative humidity can raise pressures + Elevation ‘An increase in elevation may cause a decrease in pressure duc tothe thinner air. An increase in elevation may also be accompanied by decrease in temperature + Temperature ‘Temperature, the most important ofthe atmospheric condition vai- ables, greatly affects cartridge pressure. As the propellant tempera ture increases, the propellant is able to bum faster which increases pressure within the cartridge. The propellant temperature change ‘may be due to many factors including the speed of shooting and ‘exposure to any outside heat source. The chamber temperature increases during fring. Ia earridge is left in a warm chamber for very long the propellant temperature may increase enough to eause ‘dramatic increase in pressure. When shooting in the sume. itis ‘important not to leave any cartidges exposed to the sun. The pro- pellant temperature will increase rapidly to a level which may produce unsafe pressures. + Humidity ‘An increase in relative humidity can decrease the pressure generat- ‘ed by the cartridge. Conversely, a decrease in relative humidity can ‘cause an increase in pressure. The moisture level ofthe propellant ‘will greatly affect the pressure when the ammunition is shot. The propellant will take on the same relative humidity as where the ammunition is loaded. The data in this manual shows results achieved in our tes facily. Your results will be different. Loads that generate moderate pressure levels in one firearm may generate excessive pressures in another firearm. Always tailor loads jor individual firearms. “MidwayUSA, 5875 W Van Hor Tavem Road, Columbia, MO 65203 phone 573-445-2400 FAX 573-446-1018Excessive Pressure Signs 1, at any time, excesive pressure signs are observed, STOR, you ray have exceeded a safe level already. In designing their entry into the bidding, Walther took any of the best elements of their successful PP and PPK pistols and added a locking system to withstand the 9 Toad. It was a watershed gun forthe Sam, the first dou ble-action pistol chambered inthe cartridge. Although it was designed with the German military in mind as its primary market, the fist military contract forthe P38 actualy came fr in 1939 these guns are now extreme ing WW II. Walther was unable to keep up with the demand for them. P38 were also produced by “Mauser and Spreewerk, as well as by other arms factories in occupied tritries, notably Manuthin in France and Fabique Nationale in Belgium, When the Russians swept into Germany atthe end ofthe war, they seized thousands of P38 and immediately pat them to use aftr the war in th hands of East German police forces, American forces treated the P38 they took from captured soldiers as trophies and souvenirs and the influx of these guns inthe years after the war was one ofthe key events in popularizing the 9mm in The United States. Thousands of .38 were taken and many of these filtered io the civilian pub: lic through pawnshops and gun shows during the fifties. This influx repeated itself when the West German police retired the P38 in the mid-eightics and importers brought the trade-ins to the United States. Many P.38s available to collectrs in America are ofthe Manurhin wartime issue, since most fof the Walther and Mauser models were used on the Russian front and later found theit way into the hands of Communist Bloc security forces, The P38 did not cease production after the collapse of the Third Reich. In 1951, Manurhin entered into a license agreement with Walther produce PP and PPK pistols and tooled up to make the P.38 as wel, but were unable to find an adequate stel beat treatment forthe materials to make the gun and never entered commercial production. The French {rere pleased withthe first version of the gun presented to them in 1922, bt they had three objections (four, if you count the fact that they wanted a French-designed gun) it licked an indicator thatthe gun was loaded or cocked, it was to0 heavy, and it was to difficult to strip in the field. Most of Stive’s modification addressed these issues. He shortened the gun and reduced the size of the magazine from 15 rounds to 13 to make it ighter, and he redesigned the magazine and the safety to meet the other requirements the French imposed. These sors of modifications continued for yeas a the French constantly made it clear that they prefered the French-designed MAS 1932. However, Saive’s ircless innovation eventually prodiced a win ner in the FN Model 1935, Saive’s pistol has been adopted by the militaries of numerous countries over the years, beginning with Belgium and France (sho adopted a knockoff of FN's designs). Great Britain adopted the High Power during WW Tl. Germany captured FN when they swept through Belgium in 1940 and immediately began producing High Powers oftheir own for use asa substitute standard. The Browning Arms Co introduced the High Power tothe American marketplace in the mid-fifis. BY the mid-sxtes, High Powers were being produced world wide, although in some coun- tries with bans on civilian ownership of military Firearms, they were re-chambered in 7.65 Luger because Omm Luger was considered a military round. In the 1970s FN began producing double-action versions of the High Power, which were among the pistols tested by the United States Department of Defense. According to Browning, the single action High Power had been adopted as the official military or polie sidearm in more than 68 countries by 1990, 34 a a a a a a a a a a9mm Luger 355° Dia 10 grin ‘ona [Baie Coote —[— 15 ii [i Overatungin | 1.105 | 1.080, BULLET Reducing Cartridge Homady FMU/RN. The Mauser C6, oF “Broombundle” (pictured on the leit), represents an early branching of that evolution. Mauser modified Borchardt's cartridge into a 7163425mm round, commonly known as 30 Mauser, and bull their un around i. The Mauser CI96 fist appeared in 1895 and was a modest com- nercalsuocess, but its failure in the military marketplace sent Georg Luger tothe drawing board to develop his Famed BOS, The Broombandle si its ‘widest use in China, During the First part of the century, an arms embargo prevented the Chinese from importing rifles and machine guns, but allowed Pistols. Since the Broomhandle was easily converted into a “rifle” by adding a worden stock, the Broomhandle became the weapon of choice for Chinese militares, These variant, known as "box cannons,” saw extensive combat inthe hands of Kuomintang Nationalists under Chiang Kai-Shek, Mao Tse Tung's communists, and in the numerous private armies of Chinese warlords, The Broomhandle's most famous owner was jouralist/adven turer/soldier Winston Churchill, who used it during the Boer War and highly recommended the gun to the British military (they ignored him). The Broombandle also found its way into the hands of the Russian Army. Russian Mausers ae often referred to as “Bolo” Mausers, after the Bolshevik ‘woos that caried them.
