ACTIVITY
Here is a picture of seven-year old Nicole and two-year old Gab. Each one is a bundle of
possibilities. Describe what they were before birth (their point of origin) and who they will possibly
be after birth unto adulthood. What will they possibly become? Expound on your answers.
Answer: Gab before birth has an XY chromosome while Nicole as a girl has a XX
chromosome and a fetus before they turn into babies. XX chromosome means a girl and XY
chromosome means it will turn into a boy. Gab and Nicole would have different abilities since
they have different structures. Gab if he will be matured, he can do what a man can do while Nicole
will love to cook, clean the house and wash clothes. They would change physically which they
differ in each of their development. When they will be old, they also differ emotionally. Gab and
Nicole have common abilities as a person. They can eat, can urinate and etc.
Analysis
After giving your predictions, answer the following questions:
1. When you gave your own predictions as to the kind of child, adolescent and adult Nicole and
Gab may become and hypothesized on who they once were, you were referring to human
development. What then is development?
Answer: Development is the changes of a person gradually which he/she changes
in physical, emotional, spiritual and other aspects.
2. Will two-year old Gab be able to do all that seven-year old Nicole can do? Why or why not?
Answer: Gab cannot do all the things Nicole can do since I do believe that human
development has stages. For instance, Gab just started how to learn walking while
Nicole already done mastering and now, she was good in it. It means that Nicole is
ahead stage from Gab.
3. Will there be anything common in the pattern of development of Nicole and Gab? If yes, what?
Answer: Yes, since Gab was a 2-year-old boy and belongs to infancy, the greatest
growth always occurs at the top — the head — with physical growth in size, weight
and future differentiation gradually working its way down from top to bottom (for
example, neck, shoulders, middle trunk and so on). This is the cephalo-caudal
pattern. These development patterns are common to Nicole and Gab.

4. Will there be differences in their development, e.g. pace or rate of development? What and why?
Answer: Yes, it is because people do not have the same capabilities. Some child
are fast learners, they can do what an Early childhood child can do. God made
people differently and each of one are unique in our own way. The stages of a
human development are just the common abilities of a person that is why these
stages were made.
5. Will the process of development take place very fast or gradually? Expound on your answer.
Answer: Some people have exact abilities on the developmental stages which
means they develop gradually. From my perspective, I believe that people develop
gradually which means it follows the stages while others they develop very fast and
can-do other stages ahead of them.
6. Do you believe that Nicole and Gab will continue to develop even in adulthood? Or will they
stop developing in adulthood?
Answer: Yes, as I have said, some people develop very fast, some are gradually
and some develops late than the expected stage.
APPLICATION
1. State five characteristics of human development from a life-span perspective and their
implications to the child care, education and parenting.
2. Growth is an evidence of life” or “development is an evidence of life.” What does this mean?
What does this imply to a person’s development?
Answer: It implies that a person really develops gradually and it means we are
existing creatures that we have lives in which development is the proof that we truly
exist.
4. Below are the principles of child development and learning which are the bases of
developmentally appropriate practice (DAP) in early childhood program for children from
birth through age 8, which were stated in the position paper of the National Association for
the Education of Young Children (2009). They affirm the characteristics of life-span
development approach we just discussed. Find out which one is a re-statement of the principles
of human development by stating the characteristics of human development from life-span
perspective in the second column.
SYNAPSE STRENGTHENER
1.
a. Interpret the following quotations in relation to human development: a. “Every man is in certain
respects like all other men, like some other men, no other man.” (Murray, H.A. & C. Kluckhohn)
Answer: Every man is in certain respect like all other man In which all man have
good and bad side or characteristics and like some other man, means there are some
traits of us that same with other people and no other man because we are made by
God in a unique way, we have traits that makes us who we are.
b. “Man is an unfinished project. He is always in the process of becoming.”
Answer: It is true that a man is always in process of development. Even when a
man turns old, there were also development that occurs. She/he can learn new things
which he/she do not experienced yet. That is why man continues developing and it
will just if she/he dies.
Present your interpretations through an illustration. In the light of researches on human development,
which of the two approaches is closer to the truth- traditional or lifespan? Why?
