“The MOON is beautiful”
There is this magic that been spelled in this poem. Every time a person took a pen and
write down, it seems that that pen is his magic stick. It makes magic. In the structure itself,
everyone plays so unique. In here, as inspired by other great poets of all time, we also play
through poems with its capitalization, punctuation, foregrounding and different deviation; it is not
new to us to be surprised. However, there is always something to look forward in every poem.
We can give new glimpse and new taste of our writings. Just like this, “The MOON is beautiful”
that is so unique and cute as well.
Let us start with the letters for it is the one that is grabbing our attention. We can see that
we applied unique style of capitalization. The letter “O” where used for so many times and are
capitalized. It is expected that it will be capitalized during the whole duration of the poem but in
surprise we switched it in the latter part. The capitalization and decapitalization of the letter “O”
constitutes the effect of foregrounding in the whole picture with the rest of the letters being the
forgrounded part. We can conclude from this that the “o” is the main part of this poem for it
represents the shape of a moon. We cannot avoid to lay our eyes to the entire letter o” and to
count it, it was used sixteen times than the other letters. In phonological deviation, the repetition
of this letter made the sound of the poem so cool to be heard in our ears. It uses assonance,
alliteration, and onomatopoeia. Assonance, in the way we uses the letter “o” and onomatopoeia
to create a sound of “o” just like representing the word “wow” as we are being mesmerized by
the moon. There is an amazing effect as well as we applied alliteration through the lines “shares
smiles soothing spirit”, it delivers a message of a growing soul and admiration. In the first stanza
we can derived that a moon is floating above. It could be a full moon as it gives us the feeling of
wholeness. It is bigger than the other creature on earth. We can notice form the line “tiny but
gropingness less”, it uses lexical deviation in a way that the word gropingness were derived
from the word grope or groping. Also it uses grammatical and graphological deviation in a way
that it was separated form each other, gropingness must be together with “less”. In this line as
well we can derived a meaning that people who are watching the perfectly floating moon are
“tiny but grumpy”, they are little creature of God but can do huge things; it can be bad or good.
As for gropingness, it is being clumsy, noisy and doing unnecessary things which some of us or
most people are doing nowadays. As people are being weary, there is calmness whenever we
stare at the moon, it seems like there are whispers resembled by the moon’s brightness,
tenderness and stillness. There is a feeling of peacefulness, freedom, happiness and
contentment. There is “whisper” of hope in spite of “gropingness” of evil. In the second stanza,
here enters the moon that floats so beautiful and being watch by people who are dreaming. This
could possibly bring us to the idea that the letter “o” represents not just the moon but as well as
the people, their wide eyes being captivated by the moon and their mouth saying words like
“wow” or “awesome”. The line here “below the people of the town mesmerized” is a metaphor of
the moon being gazed by the people. In grammatical deviation, instead of that line it could be
“below, the people are mesmerized” but we played it again. We don’t play by the rules of the
game, we owns it. Just like the moon, people are alone at its dreamiest.
In semantic deviation, the line “alone the moon is dreamiest” pertains to being alone just
like the moon above. People are lonely and lived an isolated life. They are aspiring of being
something. As people are small on the outside they have a big dream as they look up at the
moon. The stark contrast between the moon and the people, between what they feel and what
they dream about are vividly displayed here. Though the surroundings are dim and hazy, the
light coming from the moon is seems like a sign of hope, it is powerful and cast out a spell to
people to continue on dreaming and believing. No matter how dark or lonely life may be, there
will always be light that will be coming through our spirit and souls. In the third stanza, all the
letter “o” where now decapitalized while the other letters are the one being capitalized. There is
this mystery again that we must solve. As this letter represents the moon, it could be the idea
that the moon being watched over by the people is small. From our view here on earth, it is a
tiny shining moon especially when we use our camera it became smaller and smaller. It seems
that the moon is being shuttered by the people. We are spirits who barely see the light. Our
thoughts became bigger than our heart. Our mind became smaller than our eyes. We are being
immersed to our daily routine and we forget the beauty of our surroundings. Sadly, we forget to
appreciate things the way we appreciate them before like in the first stanza of this poem. Only
the moon has the spirit of growing portrayed in the lines “Shares smiles soothing spirit”. Also in
this line and in the wholeness of the poem, in terms of graphological deviation, it does not use
punctuation for example; there are no commas or period. It also capitalized and decapitalized
whenever wanted to create a meaning and to give mysterious effects. Nevertheless, even if we
forget to be awed by nature we will always come back and see the beauty of it. The moon still
entails the precious spirit which shares good things in us. We, just like the moon, go through
phases and progressing. There is always hope in the dark. Slow progress is still a progress. Let
us be captivated by the moonlight whenever it sneaks a peak through mountain and valleys,
through skies and blues.
In a nutshell, this poem is impressive as it depicts a picture of the moon and the people.
The mesmerized people on the ground and the shining moon above the sky, the loneliness of
the people as well as the alone moon, the lonely moon and the numbed people, and the
perfectly shaped moon and mundane people are well depicted. It shows us that being lonely
and being alone are completely different things. It shows us that in the midst of chaos there is
solemnity. In the midst of anxiety there is happiness. We just need to turn our eyes to the lights
being given by the moon of our lives. We are all in a process and tomorrow does not mean the
same as of today. The moon is beautiful and so are we.
