Indirect speech

Put the following sentences into indirect speech.


1. “I have nothing to show you,” I said to her.
I said to her that I had nothing to show her
2. He said, “My wife has just been made a judge.”
He said that his wife had been made a judge
3. “We like working on Sunday because we get double pay,” explained the builders.
The builders explained that they liked working on Sunday because they got
double pay
4. “I couldn’t get into the house because I had lost my key, so I had to break a
window,” he said.
He said that he couldn’t get into the house because he had lost his key, so he had
to break a window.
5. “If Tom wants seats, he’d better apply early,” she said.
She said that if Tom wanted seats, he should better apply early
6. “I don’t think your father likes me,” she said to her husband.
She said to her husband that she didn’t think his father liked her
7. “Bill should do very well at the university, Mrs. Smith,” said the headmaster.
“He’s done very well here.”
Headmaster said to Mrs. Smith that Bill Should do very well at the university
(because) He had done very well here
8. “I wish you had seen it,” I said to her.
I said to her I wish her had seen it
9. “It’s high time you passed your test; I am tired of driving round with an L-plate
on the front of the car,” said my sister.
My sister said to me that it’s high time I passed my test; She was tired of driving

She said that they hadn’t bought the house because it had been too expensive
11. “Are you working as well as studying?” asked Peter.
Peter asked me whether I were working as well as studying.

17.“Do you see what I see, Mary?” said the young man.
The young man said Mary whether she saw what he saw
18.“Are you sorry for what you did?” his mother asked.
His mother asked if he was sorry for what he had done
19.“Are you going to take part in the competition?” she asked her friend.
She asked her friend if he was going to take part in the competition
