Individual Lab Report

The document summarizes a student's experiment on water purification using solar distillation. [1] The student recorded collecting 2 mL of purified water from 1000 mL of water in the first trial, and 20 mL in the second trial using an improved design. [2] The improved design used insulation foam and black cloth to better absorb and concentrate sunlight for more efficient evaporation and condensation. [3] Real-life applications of distillation include purifying saltwater in emergencies and in pharmaceutical and science experiments.

V. DATA TABLE

Student Results Sheet

Trial Volume of water Added Volume collected % water purified

(mL) (mL)

Part A- First Still 1000 mL 2 mL 0.2 %

Part B 1000 mL 20 mL 2%

Record your results and calculate the percentage of the water purified.

VI. QUESTIONS:

Part A

1. Explain in your own words how the still works.

The still set-up works with the help of the rays of the sun. As the rays pass through the clear wrap,
it eventually converts into heat energy. It is because water absorbs light energy making its molecules
vibrate faster. Thus, there is an increase in temperature that makes the water evaporate. Next, the
evaporated liquid will turn into its original form due to condensation. It is a process where gas turns
into liquid due to a decrease in temperature. The condensed gas will be underneath the clear wrap
and soon will form droplets. The rock placed at the middle- top of the warp is for indention. The
indention will make the purified droplets slide down and fall into the smaller container inside the large
bowl.

2. Write down one way in which you could make your still work better.

Due to unstable weather conditions, the setup manages to collect a small volume of water only.
To improve its functionality, the concentration of the sun's heat to the structure is necessary. Hence,
an improvised solar cooker is a great way to improve the setup's functionality.

Part B

3. Explain the design that will work more efficiently than you made in Part A and then discuss your
ideas with your groupmates.

The design is composed of a medium-sized box, an insulation foam, and black cloth. Each
material has a contribution to a more efficient distillation setup. The medium-sized box will serve as
the base that will hold the whole structure. Inside the sides of the box is the insulation foam that will
be the reflector of the light energy. Both materials that form insulation foam such as, aluminum foil
and Polyethylene foam, have high thermal insulation. In the bottom part is the black cloth. The
occurrence of the absorption and conversion of light energy to heat energy will happen on this
material. The black fabric allows the salt-water mixture inside the container to undergo evaporation
and eventually condensation.

The utilization of the new design will increase the concentration of heat in the process. Unlike the
first setup, its exposure to the suns' heat is nominal or in the least amount.
4. After you have finished testing your work, draw a diagram to show how your new design works.

5. Cite some of the real-life situations that you can use this knowledge in separation of mixtures.

As the distillation process separates a liquid mixture, integration of it to some real-life situations
is possible. Whenever a person is cast away on an island, the distillation of saltwater is necessary
to have drinkable water. In the pharmaceutical industry, the distillation process is on the great
extent to ensure successful production of substance or medicine. The distillation process is also
applicable in science experiments conducted in schools. It enables the students to understand
and analyze the composition of some liquid mixtures.

VII. CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATION

In conclusion, the innovative setup collects a greater volume of purified water than the first
setup. It can absorb and trap more light energy and heat energy making the distillation process
successful and efficient.
Based on the results, enhancement of the distillation process is through:

a. Choosing the time where the weather condition is high in temperature.

b. Utilization of materials that has good thermal conductivity and are available in households.

c. Using other containers for the salt-water mixture, such as aluminum, steel, and other metal
containers.

d. Putting different colored plastic to cover the mixture. Specifically, the black-colored ones, as black
absorbs more heat.

e. Placing the setup to a more heat conducive place or area.
