MEC 241 Tutorial 1-Introduction and Basic Concepts

This document provides information and example problems related to fluid properties including density, specific gravity, specific weight, specific volume, and viscosity. It includes 10 problems calculating these properties for various fluids and gas based on given dimensions, masses, densities, temperatures, and pressures. The problems require calculating properties like density, specific gravity, specific weight, specific volume, mass, and shear stresses.

TUTORIAL 1- INTRODUCTION AND BASIC CONCEPTS

1. Define density, specific gravity and specific weight.

2. A closed rectangular tank has the dimension of 40 cm x 40 cm x 30 cm. If the tank is to be filled with a substance
having a specific gravity of 0.2037, determine:
i. the density of substance in the tank, (ans:203.7 kg/m3)
ii. The mass of substance must be added to the tank (kg), (ans: 9.776 kg)
−3 3
iii. The specific volume of substance in the tank, and (ans: 4.909 × 10 𝑚 /𝑘𝑔)
3
iv. The specific weight of substance in the tank. (ans: 1998.297𝑁/𝑚 )

3. A large hot balloon contains helium (He) having a weight of 1.49x105 N is measured under a standard
atmospheric condition at pressure and temperature of 101kPA and 150C respectively. Determine:
𝑘𝑔
i. the density of the helium, kg/m3 (ans: 0.1688 𝑚3)
−4
ii. The specific gravity of the helium (ans: 1.69 × 10 )
3
iii. The specific weight of the helium, N/m3 (ans: 1.656 𝑁/𝑚 )
3
iv. The volume of the dirigibles, m3, and (ans: 89 975𝑚 )
3
v. The mass of the helium in the hot balloon, kg. (ans: 15.1 × 10 𝑘𝑔)
(Given that the specific gas constant of helium, R = 2077 J/kg K)

4. A fluid occupies a volume of 32 L and weigh at 280 N. Determine the following fluid properties by taking the
gravitational acceleration as 9.81 m/s
i. The fluid mass in kg (ans: 28.54kg)
ii. The fluid density in kg/m3 (ans: 891.87 kg/m3)

iii. The fluid specific weight in N/m3 and (ans: 8749.24 N/m3)
iv. The fluid specific gravity. (ans: 8.75)

5. The specific volume of a substance is found to be 0.0009 m3/kg. Calculate the specific weight, specific gravity and
the density of this substance. Use 𝜌 water =1000 kg/m3 (ans: density: 1111.11kg/𝑚3, specific weight:
10900𝑁/𝑚 3 , SG:10.9)

6. A cylindrical container is 180mm in diameter and weighs 2.75 N when it is empty. When filled to a depth of 220
mm with certain oil, it weighs 38.7 N. Calculate the specific gravity of oil. (ans: SG=0.655)

7. Compressed air with a pressure of 300 kPa is stored in a cylindrical tank at temperature of 300C. The tank
diameter and height are 0.3 m and 1.5 m respectively. Estimate the density, mass and specific weight of the
compresses air if the gas constant (R) is 0.287 𝑘𝑃𝑎 ∙ 𝑚3 /𝑘𝑔 ∙ 𝐾 (ans: density=3.448 kg/m3, mass=0.3655 kg and
specific weight=33.82 N/m3)

8. A flat plate 60 cm x 120 cm slides on an oil (𝜇 = 1.04 × 10−1 𝑃𝑎 ∙ 𝑠) over a large plane surface. Assume linear
velocity distribution, estimate the force required to drag the plate at 3.5 m/s if the oil film is 3 mm thick.
(Answer: F=87.36N)
9. Determine the mass, density, specific volume and specific weight of the substance in a cylinder as shown in
Figure Q1(a). The radius of the cylinder is 50 mm. The specific gravity of the substance is 0.2037. (ans:
mass=2.0kg, density=203.7 kg/m3, specific volume= 4.91×10-3 𝑚3/𝑘𝑔, specific weight=1998.3 N/m3)

10. A large movable plate is located between two large fixed plates as shown in Figure 1 below. Two Newtonian
fluids are filled between the plates having the viscosities of 0.02 𝑁 ∙ 𝑠/𝑚2 and 0.01 𝑁 ∙ 𝑠/𝑚2 respectively.
Determine:
i. The magnitude of the shearing stresses when the moving plate has a velocity of 4 m/s. (Assume that

the velocity distribution between the plate is linear), and (ans: 𝜏1 2

= 13.3 𝑁/𝑚 , 𝜏2 =
2
13.3 𝑁/𝑚 )
ii. The moving plate area in 𝑚2 if 100 𝑁 of total force is required to move the large plate from the

corresponding position. (the thickness of the large movable plate is negligible) (ans: 𝐹𝑡𝑜𝑡𝑎𝑙 =
2
3.76 𝑚 )
