Analysis and Design of Beams

This document provides an example of analyzing the adequacy of a rectangular reinforced concrete beam. It includes the following key steps: 1. Calculate the reinforcement ratio (ρ) and check if it satisfies code requirements for minimum reinforcement and maximum reinforcement. 2. Calculate the depth of the neutral axis (c) using the balanced strain equation. 3. Determine the strength reduction factor (φ) based on the calculated strain in the extreme tension fiber. 4. Calculate the design bending moment capacity (φMn) of the beam based on the area of steel and location of the neutral axis. 5. Calculate the factored bending moment (Mu) applied to the beam based on the given load information

Analysis and Design of Beams

2.1 Analysis of Rectangular Beams with Tension Reinforcement
• Generally , in the analysis problems the following information are known:
1. Beam dimensions and reinforcement (b,h,d and As).
2. Materials strength (fy and fc`).

As (Reinforcement area)

And following information are required:

• Check the adequacy of the section according to ACI requirement.
• Compute design moment ∅Mn.
• Compute the maximum live or dead load.

3. Calculate ∅Mn
∅Mn can be calculated from:

4. Find Mu and compare it with ∅Mn
If ∅Mn ≥ Mu the section is Ok.
Else if ∅Mn < Mu the section is not Ok.
