RESEARCH METHODOLOGY

This chapter presents the research design, procedure of the

respondents, the data gathering instruments, statistical tools and arbitrary scale

that were used in the study.

Research Method

The descriptive correlational method of research was utilized in this

study. Rick Penwarden (2014) claimed that the descriptive method gathers

quantifiable information that can be used for statistical inference on the target

audience through analysis. Jackson (2009) stated that descriptive methods are

viewing and recording the participants. It involves an in-depth study of an

individual or group of individuals and the participants answer questions

administered through

interviews or questionnaires.

Since, the study deals with numeracy level of the parents at the Old

Lower Bicutan, towards an extension program. The descriptive method or

research was utilized by the researchers. The descriptive is used for frequencies,

averages and other statistical calculations. Often the best approach, prior to

writing descriptive research is to conduct a survey investigation.

Respondents of the Study

This study considered the parents at Old Lower Bicutan as the

respondents of the study.

Research Instrument

The study used a researchers-made survey questionnaire. The

validation of the instrument was done through the distribution from the five (5)

experts of TCU-College of Education. The comments and additional suggestions

from the experts were considered and the questionnaire was validated.

The first part of the questionnaire describes the demographic profile

of the respondents as to age, sex, highest educational attainment, family Income

, no. of family members, and employment status (Math is related).

The second part of the questionnaire determines the numeracy level

of the parents at Old Lower Bicutan in terms of basic operations, utilization of

calculator, problem-solving skills, and financial management.

Data Gathering Procedure

The researchers personally administered the research instruments

to the respondents to be able to discuss the instruction and significance of the

study. There are 20 – 30 minutes given time for the respondents to comfortably

answer and accomplish the questionnaire. The researchers give assurance for

the confidentiality of the respondents answer as it will only be used for the

description of the study. The researchers expressed their fullest gratitude to the

respondents not just only for giving time in answering the questionnaire but also

for showing willingness to be part of the success of the study.

The researchers processed the data after completed and free of

errors were tallied and tabulated to establish the description of the study.

Sample and Population

A sample of One Hundred ninety-nine (199) were selected from the population of

three hundred fifty (350). The subjects are randomly selected by the researcher

to provide more accurate data.

Statistical Treatment of Data

The following statistical tools were employed in the analysis of data

gathered. Data for this research study was analyzed by frequencies, percentage,

weighted mean.

To answer the demographic profile of the students, researchers will

use percentage and frequency distribution.

N = number of respondents

100 = constant value

Frequencies and percentage will be used to describe the demo-

graphic profile of the respondents, such as: age, sex, highest educational attain-

ment, family income, no. of family members, and employment status.

1. Weighted Mean (Wm)

The weighted mean will be used to describe the numeracy level of

the respondents at the old lower Bicutan: as an assessment toward extension

program in terms of basic operations, utilization of calculator, problem-solving

skills, and financial management.

2. Arbitrary Scale of Value

The researchers had used utilized a 4-point Likert scale to measure

the perception of the teacher-respondents in terms of their instructional

competences . Below is the arbitrary scale of value used:
