Course Title: Science, Technology & Society
Course Number: GESS 6
Course Credit: 3 units

Course Description
This course deals with the introductions between science &
technology and the socio-cultural, political, and economic
contexts that influence society and its varied developments.

This course also seeks to instill reflective knowledge in the


students that they may able to live good lives and apply ethical
decision-making in both social and scientific dilemmas.

This course also includes the mandatory topics on climate


change and environmental awareness.
Course Description
Based on CHED Memorandum Order No. 20, Series
of 2013, Science, Technology, and Society is an
interdisciplinary course that engages students to
confront the realities brought about by science &
technology in society through scientific knowledge
and technological development of the society with
its socio-cultural, political, economic, and
philosophical underpinnings at play.
Learning Outcomes
At the end of the course the students should be able to:
Gain the following competencies/knowledge:

1. Articulate the impacts of science & technology in


society globally, specifically in the Philippine context;
2. Explain the adaptation of science & technology in the
society, its environment, and its role in nation-building.

philosophical implications meaningful to students as members

4. Define and demonstrate the impact of social media on the

of the Filipino nation-state;
Critique human progress as a result of science &
technology and define the meaning of good life; and
Foster the value of a healthy lifestyle toward a holistic

of science & technology to the society;
Examine shared concerns of a good life to come up
with innovative solutions to the contemporary issues

Illustrate the impart of the social media & information
age to the human lives and understand the effects of

Etiquette is defined as the formal manners and
rules that are followed in social or professional
settings.
Netiquette is the correct or acceptable way of
communicating on the internet.
Be on Time.
Log in early. Attend your classes regularly.
Check the connection and test devices before the lesson begins, so
the teacher could start as soon as everybody's all ready.

Be Respectful.
Do: Respect privacy, diversity, and opinions of others.
Communicate tactfully and base disagreements on scholarly ideas and
research evidence.
Avoid: Sharing another person's professional and personal information.
Be Scholarly
Do: Use proper language, grammar and spelling. Be
explanatory and justify your opinions. Credit the ideas of
others through citing and linking to scholarly resources.
Avoid: Misinforming others when you may not know the
answer. If you are guessing about something, clearly state
that you do not know the answer.
Be Professional
Do: Represent yourself well at all times. Be truthful,
accurate, and run a final spell check. Limit the use of
slang and emoticons.
Avoid: Using profanity or participating in hostile
interactions.
Be Polite
Do: Address others by name or appropriate title and
be mindful of your tone. Treat people as if you were in
a face-to-face situation.
Avoid: Using sarcasm, being rude or writing in all
capital letters. Written words can be easily
misinterpreted as they lack non-verbal.
Participate
Treat every class as an opportunity to learn. Do not
just sit, watch, and listen the whole duration. Try to
share your opinions in a respectful manner.
Participate in class discussions.
