Lesson Plan: Name of Teacher Trainee: Dhurba Poudyal

The lesson plan is for a 12th grade chemistry class on mixtures and solutions. The objectives are for students to understand the basic concepts of mixtures, types of mixtures with examples, and terms related to solutions. The teaching methods will include a lecture and demonstrations using charts, beakers of water, salt, sugar, sand and mud to show homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures. Key points to be covered are the definitions of mixtures, homogeneous and heterogeneous mixtures with examples, the concept of solutions as homogeneous mixtures with specific examples, and the definitions of solute, solvent and components in solutions. Formative assessment questions will be asked to check student understanding.

Introduction

Good morning my dear students hope you all are doing

well.
So before going to start our today’s lesson, let me ask
you one question, so tell me how many of you can
prepare a tea? Please raise your hand. (Ok very good, it
seems most of you can, right?) Expected answer: Yes
sir.
So dear students please tell me, what are the important
ingredients that we basically use to prepare a tea?
(Various answers: water, milk, tea leaves, sugar/salt,
ginger, cloves, black pepper, cardamom etc.)
That means Tea is a Mixture of various ingredients,
isn’t it? Expected answer: Yes sir.

Announcement of the topic:

So my dear students, in today’s class we will be talking
about “Mixture” in a chemistry.
PRESENTATION
Teaching Teacher’s Expected Board Work
Points Activity Student’s
Activity
Mixture. Concepts of “Listens A Mixture is a physical
a mixture carefully” combination of two or more
with substances, which are not done
examples. chemically.

For example:

Salt/sugar + water
Sand/mud + water

Types of “Listen Basically, there are two types of

mixture. carefully” mixture:
i) HOMOGENEOUS
MIXTURE.
ii) HETEROGENEOUS
MIXTURE.

Homogeneous mixture:
"Homo” means “Same”
i.e., Homogeneous mixture is
a mixture in which, the
“Composition and Properties”
throughout the mixture is
“Uniform”.
For example:
Salt in a water,
Sugar in a water,
Glucose in a water,
Ethanol in a water etc.

Heterogeneous mixture:
"Hetero” means “different”
i.e., Heterogeneous mixture is
a mixture in which, the
“Composition and Properties”
throughout the mixture is
“Not Uniform”.

For example:
Sand in a water,
Mud in a water etc.

Solutions. Concept of “listens In chemistry, Solution is a

Solutions. carefully” Homogeneous mixture of two
or more
substances/components.

For examples:
Salt + Water or Sugar + Water
or Ethanol + Water etc.
Concept “listen It is the minimum number of
of carefully” constituents present in a
components solution.
For example:

1. Salt+Water: 2-components
(i.e., Binary solution).

2. Salt+Sugar+Water: 3-
components (i.e.,
Ternary solution).

3. Salt+Sugar+Glucose+
Water: 4-components (i.e.,
Quaternary solution).

But in this chapter we will only

talk about “Binary solution”
i.e., Only Two
Components.

In a broad sense, we can define

Solution as a

Solute+SolventSolution
Solute: The component that is
present in a small amount Or
the component that is being
dissolved in a solvent.

Solvent: The component that

is present in a larger amount Or
the component that dissolve
solute.

For example:

In Salt + Water, Salt is a

Solute and Water is a
Solvent.
Generalization or Summary
Basics concepts of mixture and its types with
examples.
Different terms related with solutions.
Difference between Solute and solvent.

Formative Assessment
1) How Homogeneous Mixture is different from
Heterogeneous mixture? (Student- XYZ)
2) Both Homogeneous mixture and Heterogeneous
mixture are solution- (True/False). (Student- PQR)
Answer: false.
3) The component that is present in a small amount is
called ------------ & the component that is present in a
larger amount is called ---------------.(Student- ABC).

ENRICHMENT:
Try to find out at least five different types of
Homogeneous mixture at your home, we will discuss it by
tomorrow.
THANK YOU
