1.0. INTRODUCTION
1.1 Scope
To perform surface preparation and painting Works on the pipe and fittings material and valve as per
APPENDIX A A-1 NEW CONSTRUCTION COATING SYSTEMS of PTS 15.20.03 Protective Coating & Lining.
The new piping shall be painted with the product color code and provide the flow direction. The new
pipe and valve shall also be blasted (external prior to painting works). All painting process shall comply
with PTS 15.20.03 (2019) Protective Coatings and Linings requirement

2.1. Reference document shall be the specification herein and painting specification
2.2. PETRONAS TECHNICAL STANDARD – Protective Coatings and Linings PTS 15.20.03 June 2019

3.0. GENERAL
3.1. Coating Material
Storage, thinning, mixing and handling of paint materials shall be in accordance with the Paint
Manufacture's recommendation. All paint materials and solvent shall be supplied in the paint
manufacture’s original containers, durably and legibly marked with clear description of the contents.
This shall include the specification number, the color reference number, the method of application
for which it is intended, the batch number, date of manufacture, the shelf life expiry date and the
paint manufacture’s name or recognized trademarks.
Different brands or different make of paint shall not be inter-mixed. Similary, mixing of different
brands or generic types of paint material is not permitted. The Manufacture's pot-life requirements
shall be strictly and diligently followed. The same shall be said for the minimum and maximum
over- coating time as recommended by paint manufacture.
Only thinners as specified by the paint manufacture shall be used. Mixing and thinning directions as
furnished by the paint manufacture hall be Statutory requirements for levels of volatile organic
compound are to bemet.

4.0. SURFACE PREPARATION

4.1. General

Foroptimumpaintperformance, surface tobepaintedorcoatedshall becompletely dryandfreefrom

burrs, weld spatter, flux, rust, loose, scale, oil and other foreign matter deleterious and harmful to
paint. After preparation of substrate surface, any grit or dust shall be removed and a layer of primer
applied before any corrosion or recontamination occurs, normally within four (4) hours after tooling.

4.2 Blasting

4.2.1 Checks that proper make-up of abrasives, (shot/grit) are in order to hold reasonably a
constant abrasive size and shape.

4.2.2 Must see to it that the abrasive (slag) used shall be dry and free from contamination.

4.2.3 Inspector shall see to it that only those slag which have passed through materials inspection
shall be used.

4.2.4 Checks at random the pressure of supplied air directly to the gun through the pressure gauge
attached to the equipment.

4.2.5 Assures that air blast from air receivers shall be freed of detrimental amounts of moisture
and oil. Equipment performing this shall be regularly checked to see if they are in good working
condition.

4.2.6 Visual inspection on the blasted surface shall be conducted to check if surface preparation
conforms to specification.

4.2.7 Measure anchor profile pattern depth with the use of a surface PROFILE comparator.

4.2.8 If blasting is performed during the night and paint to be performed the following morning the
surface shall have a light re-blasting to clean the surface.

4.2.9 All spent abrasives shall be removed from the deck and skids daily and shall be packed for
disposal. Silica free and minimum dusting abrasives shall be used.

4.2.10 Blasting abrasive types to be are Copper Slag (16 – 30 or 14 – 30) or Garnet (30 – 60). The
application for both abrasives are open blast or wet blast at open or confine space. Copper slag
used for open blast shall not be reused or recycle.

4.2.11 The surface blast profile (anchor pattern) shall be 30 – 60 microns for SP5 blast standard.

4.2.12 Multicoat system designations refer to codes as shown in Table 1 and 2 (GS 19-1-2).
Individual coats are labeled in order of application and must be clearly distinguishable in color
from successive coat in the multicoat system.

5.0. PAINT APPLICATION

5.1. Pre Application Procedure

5.1.1. General

Any surface to be coated shall be dry and rendered dust free to application of primer coat. This can
be accomplish by blowing of the surface with clean air dry air. If present they shall be removed by
solvent washing or to salts by water washing or steam cleaning and the areas power tooling.

5.1.2 mixing and Thinning

All coating materials shall be thoroughly stirred in a pressure pot with a power mixer for a time
sufficient tothoroughly remix the pigments and vehicles. Sufficient agitation tomaintain good mixing
shall be applied until the product is used. Coating containing heavy or metallic pigments that
have tendency to be settle shall be kept in continuous suspension in the pressure pot by a
mechanical agitator or stirrer.

If during mixing / stirring air is entrapped in the product, sufficient time should be allowed for air
bubbles to escape, before application is started. This is reduce the risk of pin-holing of the coating
layer to be produced. Thinner shall be not added to primer or paints useless necessary for proper
application according to the paint manufacture’s recommendation. The type of thinner used must
comply with same.

5.2. Scheduling

Unlessotherwise recommended by the paint manufacturer and accepted by the Customer, paint
shall NOT be applied when:

5.2.1. Incomplete surface preparation or oil, grease and dust still present on substrate to be
painted.

5.2.2. The surface temperature is less than 3°C above Dew Point.

5.2.3. The air or surface temperature is below 5°C as it would adversely affect curing of paint.

5.2.4. The relative humidity of air is greater than 85% except for organic zinc silicate up to 90%.

5.2.5. The metal substrate to temperature is higher than the recommended by the paint
manufacture ofapplication.

5.2.6. There is likelihood of an adverse change in weather conditions within two (2) hours after
application that would result in a drastic drop in air temperature below hose as specified above.

5.2.7. There is deposition of moisture in the form of rain, condensation etc. upon the surface.

Power disc grinded surface shall be coated with the primer specified within four (4) hours after
grinding or within such other limits asmaybe specified and before any visible rusting occurs. Each
coat of paint shall dry for a time period within the limits prescribed by the Paint Manufacturer
before the next coat applied (minimum and maximum over-coating time).

5.3. Application Methods

5.3.1. General

Coating shall be uniformly applied without runs, sags, solvent blister or other blemishes. All
blemishes and other irregularities shall be repair or completely removed and recoated.

Inter-coat contamination shall be minimized by maintaining proper cleanliness and by applying

the intermediate and finish coats within the over-coating time recommended by the paint
manufacturer. If contaminants are present, they shall be removed before applying succeeding
coats. Contrasting color shall be used for each coat of paint.

5.3.2. Brush Application

Paint brushes used shall be of a style and quality that will permit proper and appropriate
application of paint .Good quality hog bristle ispreferred and nylon orother synthetic bristle type
are prohibited. Round or oval brushes are considered most suitable for rivets, bolts, irregular
surface etc. wide flat brushes are suitable for large flat areas but not to exceed with of 120mm.

Brushes shall be kept in good condition at all times and discarded ifdamaged or excessively worn.
The brushing shall be done that a smooth coat, as uniform in thickness s possible is obtained.

Runsandsagsshall bebrushes out.During application ofeach coat, all areassuchascorner, edges,

welds, small brackets, bolts, and interstices shall receive additional coating material to ensure
theseareashaveatleasttheminimumspecifiedfilmthicknessandtoensure continuityofcoating.

5.3.3. Roller Application

Roller application shall be discouraged and shall be subject to the specific approval of customer.
If allowed, it will only be used or relatively large surface area provide the first primer coat of paint
applied by brush and its use accordance to Paint Manufacture's instruction. Rolles shall be
manufacture from good quality “carpet pile” or lambs wool.
