Lead In (5-10 min)


ACTIVATE SCHEMATA: Create a mental image for the students and get them thinking about what
they already know that can help with the lesson. This can be open-ended questions, pictures, or
video.

BUILD CONTEXT: Introduce theme/topic and establish goals for the lesson.

Test (-- min)


FREER PRACTICE: open practice that focuses on introducing and eliciting target language in a
natural context. May focus on any of the language skills and employ any interaction type (besides
Teacher:Class)

ASSESSMENT: Bring the class back together. Review results of Freer practice assignment with a
focus on correcting and expanding target language as a group.

TEACH TARGET LANGUAGE: Using the assessment as the starting point, fill in the missing pieces of
the class's understanding of the target language.

MODEL/DRILL: Students are given target language clearly and naturally by the teacher and then
practice it chorally and individually

WRITTEN RECORD: Possibly provide handouts that explain the target language. Otherwise, write
key points on board.

HIGHLIGHT FORM: explain form possibly by diagramming or otherwise breaking it down

MECHANICAL PRACTICE: controlled practice that focuses on mastering the forms. Critical for
grammar.

MEANINGFUL PRACTICE: controlled practice that focuses on mastering the meaning. Critical for
both grammar and vocabulary.

FREER PRACTICE: open practice that focuses on applying target language in a natural context

ASSESSMENT METHOD: how should the teacher assess whether the practice was effective in
producing the target language naturally?

CLARIFICATION/REVIEW: instructions on how teachers may need to clarify/reinforce the target


language based on assessment. This may be through a short presentation.

Wrap Up (5 min)
SUPPLEMENTAL: a place for any additional fun material like a game or song that a teacher may
want to add to fill out the lesson that finished quickly or for material that could incorporate the
target language in the greater context of the course.

HOMEWORK: List assignments and any instructions for it here. Possibly, introduce test.
