Module 3. Individual Assignment: Case Study Proyect: What Is BYD's Current Product Flow Process?

BYD initially used a sequential product development process for batteries to carefully develop the sophisticated technology. For cars, BYD switched to a concurrent process to introduce ecological features and bring products to market faster. Strengths of the concurrent process include designing for production and costs, reducing time to market, and considering broader goals. Limitations include potential rework costs from design flaws, complex synchronization across departments, and lack of individual analysis.

MODULE 3. INDIVIDUAL
ASSIGNMENT: CASE STUDY PROYECT
What is BYD’s current product flow process?
To begin, according to the market change that is used in this case, we
can analyze the characteristics that are framed in the case of BYD in two.

First, when the process consisted of the manufacture of batteries, the

process wanted to "find creative ways of making similar batteries at a lower
cost" (Schroeder & Goldstein, 2016), in addition to being the first type of product
with these characteristics, Therefore, we can conclude that they carried out a
sequential product development process. We can support this conclusion with
the definition of this type of process "The various steps are done one after
another, with all attention and resources focuses on that single task" (BrainKart,
2021) since for the development of such a sophisticated stack It had to be done
very carefully due to the dangers it entails and the fulfillment of the objectives.

Second, when the process focused on the production of cars, it was

desired to introduce ecological characteristics (Schroeder & Goldstein, 2016), in
this case, I concluded that due to the current situation, type of product, and
characteristics that are described in the text, the company began With the
Concurrent process, currently many automotive industries have developed this
design process due to the short time in which they can bring their product to
market and thanks to the characteristics of the design process, costs can be
reduced by seeking a common goal (Aroca, 2021 ).

What are the strengths and limitations of this product flow

process?
As I have divided the development into two parts, and in each one, a
different type of design has been explained. To solve this question we will take
the last process since the case study focuses on BYD as a producer of
ecological cars.

For BYD Company the strengths of the concurrent design process are:

1. Produce a product that in planning matters is designed

considering production processes, sales, costs, and even
engineering. Allowing to reduce costs to the maximum and
produce optimal products.
2. Have a new product that hits the market in a short time.

3. Working with a large design team can consider broader / higher

goals and allow for the development of new technology.
4. The excellent feedback between the different phases

However, the limitations would be:

1. Finding a design flaw (from design to the production process) can

lead to product rework costs.
2. Because this process focuses on the teamwork of different
departments, the synchronization process makes the design
process more complex.
3. When working in such a large team, the individual analysis of each
department can be lacking.
