What I Need to Know
In this module, you will apply reading and writing decimals, place value of decimals, and
rounding off decimals. There are three lessons in this module which you can easily connect with
each other. The knowledge you have on decimals will be intensified. Decimal numbers are part
of our daily living. In buying anything that costs with centavos, in getting the body temperature
especially now that we are having the pandemic COVID-19, in weighing things that requires the
exact weight, in measuring things, and many more. The language and terms used in this module
are in layman’s term for you to easily learn and enjoy the lesson. The module is divided into
three lessons namely:
 Lesson 1 – Place Value Through Ten Thousandths
 Lesson 2 – Reading and Writing Decimal Through Ten Thousandths
 Lesson 3 – Rounding Decimals
After going through this module, you are expected to:
 Give the place value of a digit of a given decimal through ten thousandths;
 Read and write decimal numbers through ten thousandths; and
 Round decimal numbers to the nearest tenths, hundredths, and thousandths.

Let us have review on Decimal Numbers.

A number that includes a dot (known as decimal point) after the ones digit and making
the digits to the right of the dot denote tenths, hundredths, thousandths, and so on is called a
decimal number. Such a number is named as decimal.

A decimal can also be represented by a number line. Below is an illustration of decimal

What is It

Decimals represent numbers that include a part of a whole. A decimal point is placed
between the ones place and the tenths place. All the digits or places to the left of the decimal
point make up the whole number part. All digits or all places to the right of the decimal point
make up the fractional part which is less than 1. This part is always separated into 10, or a
power of 10, parts.
When writing a decimal, put the decimal point between the ones column and the tenths
column.

What I Need to Know

In this module, learners build their skills and competencies on how to compare and arrange
decimal numbers, on how to add and subtract decimals through thousandths without and with
regrouping. Throughout the module, learners will explore such strategies and techniques on how they
do comparing and arranging decimals, and in adding and subtracting decimals. The scope of this
module is manageable in many different learning situations. The language used recognizes the diverse
vocabulary level of students. The lessons are arranged to follow the standard sequence of the course.
But the order in which you read them somewhat corresponds with the textbook you are now using.
The main objective of this module is for the learners to know about decimal numbers – how to
compare and arrange them maybe from least to greatest or from greatest to least, and how to add and
subtract decimals.
The learning objectives of this module is for the learners to:
1. compare and arrange decimal numbers; and
2. add and subtract decimal numbers through thousandths without and with regrouping

What I Know

2. Which of the following is the least?

A. 13.567 B. 13.476 C. 13.587 D. 13.597

3. What number must be inserted on the blank to make the arrangement correct:
1.08, 1.11, ___, 1.48?
A. 1.02 B. 1.28 C. 1.50 D. 1.05

Lesson
Comparing and Arranging
1 Decimal Numbers

What’s In

1. What are the symbols being used to compare decimal numbers?

2. How to compare decimal numbers?
3. How to arrange decimals?
The symbols; > (greater than), < (less than), and = (equal) are used to compare numbers, either whole
numbers, decimals, or fraction.
Greater than (>)is used if the first number being compared has greater value than the other.

3
Example:
1. Which is greater, 34.98 or 34.809?
- The 34.98 is greater than 34.809; therefore, 34.98 > 34.809.
However, 34.809 is less than 34.98

2. Compare the value of 160.890 to the value of 160.89

- The value of 160.890 is equal to the value of 160.89. So, 160.89 = 160.

To compare or to arrange decimals, you should identify the number with greatest and greater
value and the number with lesser or least value.

There are two ways of arranging decimal numbers:

1. Ascending order – the set of decimal numbers is arranged from least to greatest.
Example: 0.67, 0.98, 1.09, 1.90, 5.809, 5.890
Least to Greatest

2. Descending order – the set of decimals is arranged from the number with the greatest value
to the number with the least value.
Example: 45.896, 45.098, 32.54, 29.97, 18.609, 12.001
Greatest to Least

What’s New

Observe the table.

ROMMEL’S WEEKLY SAVINGS

Monday Tuesday Wednesday Thursday Friday

₱9.50 ₱7.75 ₱10.25 ₱ 8.75 ₱9.75

QUESTIONS:

1. In which day did Rommel have the greatest savings? How much did he save?
2. How much did Rommel save the least? In what day?
3. Arrange the amount of Rommel’s savings from least to greatest.
4. What is the proper order of the days did Rommel save from greatest to least?

What is It

To compare and arrange decimals, we need to consider the following:

Align first the decimal points and the digits in their corresponding place values.

Begin comparing the digit/s with the same place values from the leftmost digits.

Use the symbols > (greater than), < (less than), or = (equal) in comparing decimal
numbers.
OBSERVE THE ILLUSTRATION:

20.182 20.574 20.970 20.907 20.90

Question:

Is the value of the number in the first number card greater or less than the last?

To answer the problem above, compare the first 20.182 and the last 20.90 .

4
Continue comparing to the next digit. The
digit in the tenths place of the first number is 1
First 20.18 20 while the last is 9. There, we can say that 1 is
2 equal lesser than 9.
Last 20.90 20 Therefore; 20.182 is less than 20.90 or
00 20.182 < 20.90

To arrange decimals, we should identify the greatest and the least. There are 2 ways to arrange
the order of decimal numbers, the ASCENDING and the DESCENDING orders.

Ascending is an arrangement from least to greatest, while Descending is from

greatest to least.

Problem: The size of paper that is often used by the teacher during their test with their students are 1.00,
0.25, and 0.50. If you are asked to arrange the size in ascending or in descending order, how will you do
it?

Here is the correct order to do:

Ascending Order: 0.25 , 0.50 , 1.00

Descending order: 1.00 , 0.50 , 0.25

ADDITION AND SUBTRACTION OF DECIMALS

To add decimals, align the decimal points of each given number in a straight vertical column.
Add in the same way you are adding whole numbers. Start adding from the rightmost digit of the
addends going to the leftmost. If the sum of the digits you are adding is 10 or more, regroup by carrying
the tens digit over the next digit and bring-down last digit. Align the decimal point in the sum to the
decimal points of the addends. The decimal point is used to separate the whole number from the decimal
number in the sum.

When subtracting decimals, align first the decimal points of the minuend and the
subtrahend vertically, the same process as you add decimals. Regroup the decimals if necessary before
you go to the actual process of subtracting the subtrahend from the minuend.

EXAMPLE 1. Adding Decimal Numbers

What is the sum of 0.352 and 0.400?

Solution: First – Align the decimal points vertically

0.352
+0.400

Second – Add starting from right to left

0.352
+0.400

0.752

Example 2. Subtracting Decimals without Regrouping

Subtract 0.300 from 1.62

Solution: First – Align the decimal points vertically

1.62
- 0.30

Second – Subtract starting from right to left

1.62
- 0.30

8
Example3. Subtracting Decimals with Regrouping

Subtract 0.150 from 0.823

Solution: First – Align the decimal points vertically

0.823
- 0.150

Second – Regroup or borrow

Since we cannot subtract 5 from 2, we will

0.823 regroup. Regroup 8, 8 becomes 7, then add
- 0.150 the10 to 2, 2 becomes 12 .

Third – Subtract when already regrouped

What I Have Learned

MATHEMATICAL CONCEPT TO REMEBER

 To add decimals, align the decimal points vertically or in straight column. Add as you add
whole numbers.
 Align the decimal point in the sum with the decimal points in the addends. If the sum of the
digits in a place is more than 10, regroup the decimal.
 When subtracting decimals, align first the decimal point, just the same in addition.
 Regroup the decimal if necessary, before going to subtracting process.
 Use the decimal point to separate whole number from the decimal number in the sum or in
the difference

Lesson Solving Word Problems
1 Involving Addition
and Subtraction
This lesson allows you to solve routine and non-routine word problems involving
addition and subtraction of decimals. In doing so, we will still apply George Polya’s four
unique steps in solving word problems that include:
UNDERSTAND. Look for data that can be used to solve the problem. Check of the
condition of the problem and know the unknown or what is asked.

PLAN. Plan for different strategies appropriate for the problem. Strategies must suit the
learners depending on what he has. In this lesson, use of diagrams and reciprocals will
be used to solve the problem.

SOLVE. Carry out the plan. If the original plan fails, look for another strategy.

CHECK. Examine for the answer obtained.

Word problems based on real-life situations are used to activate your prior
knowledge for you to easily unlock the problem. There is no “one size fits all” solution
and you are entitled to use a variety of strategies that might include use of concrete
materials, pictures/drawings, and equations.

What’s New

Aim high and hit the mark!

Jonathan aims to finish Grade 5 with honors, at least. In order to become one, he needs
to have a minimum final average of 90 at the end of the school year. Below is a table
that shows his averages in the first three quarters.
1st Quarter 2nd Quarter 3rd Quarter 4th Quarter Final Average
88.5 89.25 90.325 ?

If he gets an average of 92 in the 4th quarter, will he be included in the list of pupils with
honors at the end of the school year? Will he graduate with or without honors? Do you
have an idea on how to verify whether he will have honors or not? What should be the
least possible grade in the 4th quarter for Jonathan to be recognized as with honors?

First, we have to understand the problem. We are asked (a) whether Jonathan will
graduate with or without honors with the averages record and (b)the least possible
average in the 4th quarter for Jonathan to get a final average of 90. The following
information is needed to solve for the problem:
88.5 - average in 1st Quarter
89.25 – average in 2nd Quarter
90.325 – average in 3rd Quarter
92 – average in 4th Quarter

Next, we have to plan on the strategy that we will use to lead us to the answer. In this
case, we will use equation to solve for the problem.

6
88.5+89.25+90.325+ 92 88.5+89.25+90.325+ 𝑁
We will use the equation (a) 4
= N and (b) 4
= 90

Then, we will carry out the plan or solve.

to receive a final average of 90

Finally, we will verify whether the answer is correct by getting the average of 4 quarters

using the answer in (b). We have = 90. Since the final average is the

What I Can Do
Aside from Celsius and Farenheit, Kelvin is another measurement of
temperature. If 0oC, the water starts to freeze, Kelvin at absolute 0 is the lowest
temperature theoretically attainable that molecules have almost energy of motion. To convert
Kelvin temperature to Celsius, subtract 273.15 or C = K – 273.15.

Find the Celsius temperature for the given Kelvin temperature.
