Read and carefully understand each question below. Answer each question substantially and give DIRECT
ANSWERS. The FIRST 2-3 SENTENCES SHOULD present your main point.
DO NOT COPY ANSWERS FROM THE INTERNET. I CHECK YOUR OUTPUTS FOR
PLAGIARISM.
Encode your answers inside the boxes. You may adjust the size of the answer box. (20 points per question)

1. Discuss the importance of biodiversity in mitigating the impacts of climate change by

providing at least 2 examples. These examples must be real or based from research
(local/national/international). (20 points)

ANSWER HERE:

To mitigate the impacts of climate change, we need to do our role as individuals by being aware and

taking action of what's happening in our surroundings. Climate change poses a significant danger to

biodiversity, ecological services, and human health. Mitigating its impacts on living creatures and society

is becoming increasingly important in environmental management plans. First, we need to promote our

innovations and technology for sustainable breakthroughs. Technological advancement can also help

mitigate the impact of climate change because they can innovate their knowledge to the next level and

bring up a solution that can help protect our environment. We can adopt renewable sources like solar,

wind, and small hydro with the help of technology. For instance, Japan is assisting other countries in

developing more environmentally friendly modes of transportation, such as rapid bus transit, electric cars,

and biofuels, and supporting land and forest management that is more sustainable in saving our planet.

Technology innovation is one of the proposed solutions in mitigating the impacts of climate change. We

should all adopt and manage our changing climate because, while it cannot be halted, it can be slowed

with the aid of everyone on the planet. Second, The Megacities Carbon Project, run by NASA, tackles

the difficulty of precisely measuring and monitoring greenhouse-gas emissions from the world's most

populous cities. About three-quarters of fossil-fuel carbon dioxide emissions originate from the cities and

power plants that feed them, which account for about 2% of the land area. At the moment, the focus is on

air sampling pilot programs in Los Angeles and Paris. The goal is to expand the approach to more cities

worldwide, eventually establishing a global urban carbon tracking system that would allow local

governments to account for the many carbon emissions and how they fluctuate.

2. What can people and nations do to fix/solve global warming? Cite five (5) specific and
creative contributions you can personally do at a national or international level. Explain them
in detail. Number your answers. (20 points)

ANSWER HERE:

1. Plant Trees: More than only absorbing carbon, trees play an essential role in the environment.

When planted in sustainable agroforestry systems, they improve biodiversity, water retention, soil

health, food security, and economic development for local populations. The most cost-effective

strategy to combat global warming is to reforest. Planting more trees can help lower the quantity

of carbon in our atmosphere since plants absorb carbon dioxide (which makes up 82 percent of

glasshouse gases in our environment).

2. Lowering your electric bill: Producing clean energy is crucial, but decreasing our energy and

water use by utilizing more efficient technologies (such as LED light bulbs and novel shower

systems) is less expensive and equally necessary. Heating systems are the single most significant

energy expenditure in the home, and electricity is one of the leading contributors to glasshouse

gas emissions. As a result, the most effective strategy to cut your power use is to lower your

heating expenses. It is a cost-effective method of preserving our world by sacrificing our

demands and electricity. We need to be more cautious and don't waste energy uselessly.

3. Promoting sustainable transportation- Helping to promote public transit, carpooling, and

electric and hydrogen mobility may substantially lower CO2 emissions and aid in the battle

against global warming.

4. Promoting sustainable agriculture & forest management- An objective should be to

encourage better use of natural resources, avoid enormous deforestation, and make agriculture

greener and more efficient.

5. Responsible consumption & recycling- Our Earth has many natural resources, but we have not

used them appropriately, and we are presently consuming far more than the planet can offer. We

need to learn how to exploit and create in more sustainable ways so that we can undo the damage

we've done to the Earth. Assist developing nations in strengthening their scientific and technical

capacities to transition to more sustainable consumption and production practices.

3. Think of a modern-day problem that can be solved by Genetic Engineering. Say you are the
genetic engineer tasked to create a GMO to solve this problem, what unique characteristics (at
least 3) will it exhibit? Describe each. (20 points)

Page 3 of 8 GSTS|FINAL
Adapted by CDF ∞
ANSWER HERE:

One of the modern-day problems that Genetic Engineering can solve is helping treatment and conditions

and diseases. Insulin manufactured using biotechnology replaced pig-derived insulin, which some

individuals were allergic to. Interferon therapy, which stimulates the immune system, human growth

hormone, and the hepatitis B vaccination, is biotechnology-based. Despite these remarkable advances in

modern medicine, we now face terrifying threats such as the Zika virus spread and the development of

antibiotic-resistant microorganisms. Biotechnology is one of the most promising and tailored approaches

to solving these problems. Many researchers are also looking at using CRISPR/Cas gene-editing

technology as a novel way to combat antibiotic-resistant bacteria.

New genetic engineering is both exciting and frightening. Society may overcome ailments by modifying

individual genomes or choosing specific embryos to prevent health risks. However, it can create

"superhumans," enhanced for certain traits (intelligence or appearance) and increase societal disparities.

Genetic technologies are at the heart of what it means to be human, and they must be governed. This task

is made more difficult because technology advances quicker than the governing institutions that surround

it can keep up. We'll need adequate control and regulation at both the national and international levels to

avoid abuses and enhance public safety while not obstructing good research and applications. Suppose we

prevent separating our species into genetic haves. In that case, we must begin to live our ideals and thus

have a perilous loss of variety or a genetic determinism that weakens our humanity. But, although we

must be aware of the risks, we must equally remember that these technologies have enormous potential

for good.
