Feu Institute of Technology Surveying Laboratory Date: October 13,2021 Laboratory Report Number: 04

The document is a laboratory report summarizing a surveying experiment to determine elevations of points along an alignment. It includes the objectives, data collection of backsight and foresight distances, calculations of point elevations, a table of results, observations of errors, and a conclusion about using a theodolite and leveling rod to compute elevations.

A. Objectives

1. To the elevations of selected points in the alignment provided.

2. To sketch the elevation profile of the alignment.

B. Data Capture:
● Backsight Distance from instrument toward Point 1

● Foresight Distance from instrument toward Point 2

● Backsight Distance from instrument toward Point 3

● Foresight Distance from instrument toward Point 2

C. Calculations (handwritten)

D. Results and Discussion

Differential Leveling

Point Backsight (m) Height of Instrument (m) Foresight (m) Elevation (m)

1 0.28 -- -- 50.000

A -- 50.28 -- --

2 0.837 -- 0.707 49.573

B -- 50.41 -- --

3 0.201 -- 0.818 49.592

C -- 49.793 -- --

4 -- -- 0.84 48.953

This table shows the tabulated data of point 1 to point 4 with the use of a leveling instrument.
We can calculate the different elevation with the help of the hypothetical elevation of point 1 (BM)
which is 50m. Afterwards we can also check if the data is correct, see the equation below:

Sketch of the elevation from point 1 to point 4

E. Observation
As we watched the video, we observed errors in improper handling of equipment which may
cause wrong values in giving the measurements. In addition, there are also errors in the
experiment regarding the leveling rod, which is due to incorrect alignment.

F. Conclusion
We can compute the elevation of a given area by using the theodolite, a measuring tape,
and a leveling rod. It's essential that we can identify what the backsight and the foresight are
because the two are used in different formulas. Hence, it is much better if we can avoid errors
during computation. We can also tell if the path is going upward or downwards by plotting the
elevation points on a graph. It can help us Civil engineering students grow in our field of interest
because identifying the field's elevation is one of the civil engineer's jobs. It is necessary to
ensure where the needed adjustments will be placed.
