I. Content: ARITHMETIC SEQUENCE
II. Discussion
Are you ready to learn more about arithmetic sequence?
Remember the matchsticks game? Let us recall its answer below.

Let us take the number of matchsticks 4, 7, 10, 13, 16, 19, 22, 25, 28, and 31. We see that the number of matchsticks forms an arithmetic
sequence. Suppose we want to find the 20th, 50th and 100th terms of the sequence. How do we get them? Do you think a formula would help? If
so, we could find a formula for the nth term of the sequence.
 In this case, it will not be difficult since we know the common difference of the sequence. Look at the example below.
Example (from the Matchsticks game) 1: Let us take the first four terms. Let a1 = 4, a2 = 7, a3 = 10, a4= 13.
How do we obtain the second, third and fourth terms? Consider the table below and complete it. Observe how each term is rewritten.

How else can we write the terms? Study the next table and complete it.

In general, the first n terms of arithmetic sequence with a1 as first term and d as common difference are a1, a1+d, a1+2d,…, a1+(n-1)d. If
a1 and d are known, it is easy to find any term in an arithmetic sequence by using the rule an = a1 + (n-1) d.
Example 2: What is the 10th term of the arithmetic sequence 5, 12, 19, 26, …?
Given: a1 = 5 Solution: an = a1 + (n-1) d
d=7 a10 = 5 + (10-1) 7
n = 10 a10 = 5 + (9) 7
a10 = 5 + 63
a10 = 68.

 Another common task in studying arithmetic sequence is finding the terms between any two nonconsecutive terms which are known as
arithmetic means.
Example: Insert 4 arithmetic means between 5 and 25.
Given: a1 = 5 Solution 1: (Find the common difference)
an = 25 a6 = a1 + (n-1)d
n = 6 (number of terms from 5 to 25) 25 = 5 + (6-1)d
25 – 5 = 5d (transposition method)
20 = 5d (divide both sides by common factor 5 from 5d)
4 = d (we get 4 by dividing 20 to 5 and d by dividing 5d to 5).
Solution 2: Now, we can find what is being asked; the 4 arithmetic means.
Since d = 4, then a1, a2, a3, a4, a5, a6 will be 5, 9, 13, 17, 21, 25, respectively. (Note: The underlined data were the unknown).
 At this point, you know already some essential things about arithmetic sequence. Now, we will learn how to find the sum of the first n
terms of an arithmetic sequence. You must remember these things in determining the sum of arithmetic sequence.
Let us denote the sum of the first n terms of arithmetic sequence as a1 + a2 + a3 + … + an by sn.
In reverse order, it can be written as sn = an + an-1 + an-2 +…+ a1
In short, from these two equations we come up with the formula .
Now, let us have an example.
Find the sum of the first 20 terms of the arithmetic sequence –2, –5, –8, –11, …
Solution: S20 = [ 2(-2) + (20-1) -3]
S20 = 10 [ -4 + (19) -3]
S20 = 10 [ -4 + (-57)]
S20 = 10 [ -61]
S20 = –610
