Values and Families

Family is the primary source of values according to this house. While school plays a role in children's development, the family is where children first learn social norms and how to interact in society through close bonds with parents and siblings. Values can vary between cultures, so it is important not to standardize or impose values, but rather teach understanding and respect for different beliefs. Ultimately, parents choose their children's schools according to the family's own values and formative plan.

THIS HOUSE CONSIDERS FAMILY AS THE MAIN SOURCE OF VALUES ABOVE SCHOOL

Definition: family (nuclear), main source of values (norms that are accepted by society, what’s
considered ethic), school (regular basic education)

Valuable motion: moral/comparative (Should it be ………… or not?)

Family: nuclear

School: CNEB (values are part), teachers (not just knowledge teachers, but formers)

Children: values learning

Social animals, cooperation, teamwork

When we need in society we need to take those norms, limiting their freedom to not trespass
others’ rights

Are values universal or depends on each country?

Not just to normalize considering different cultures

Kant focus: universal values, norm that’s above everything

Other focus cultural relativism: changeable values because families have certain scale that
adapts to community needs (we are judging from a point of view that we have been taught)
UN NO SE PUEDE METER EN TRADICIONES DE CULTURAS DE HACE TIEMPAZO! Rights
Declarations of Indigenous People

When governments impose a scale to achieve goals (Nazi example: family decided to, schools
were forced to, so governments had the guilt)

We can’t judge over parents’ decisions (example: when they decide not to send them to school
so they’re doing something good for their community, if there is not intimidation and
punishments and force and not voluntarily)

PRO
Difference of values regarding different cultures and their own traditions
Rights of parents of deciding what type of education their children receive (difference of
religions, international background)
First contact: first years, you spend more with your family.
A teacher (lots of children) can never love as much as a parent loves their children (you and
siblings) and even though there are capacitated, they will base in their personal experience. It is a
linear process that goes from family to school to family again.
School is part of formative plan of the family: what school to go, your family decided, so you are
where you are because your parents though that was the best for you. They will put you in a
school that goes along with the values of the family, and this comes from the parents.

PRO CON
A1: percentages of kids succeeding without family vs school
Every species needs the help of their parents to survive. In every species of course
there is a different situation. In the case of humans, even though you are raised by a
parent, aunt or grandfather or whoever, humans need special bond.
Humans are thoughtful as the most vulnerable specie in Earth, we biologically need a
family, they are our first and most important bond, they give us the most basic things
and teach us how to interact with society since we are introduced to it. Who was the
first person to told you not to stick your finger in the socket? Who are the people
who teach you to say “Please” and “Thank you”? “Good morning” and “Goodbye”?
are vulnerable and depend on them
In the family, personality is formed. Why? Because you get real connections with real
love and affection. In school, teachers can care about you but not as much as you are
cared at home. A father or a mother would give their lives for their children, and yes,
there have been cases where teachers gave their lives for their students, they were
definitely amazing people, but they did that not because they were teachers, but
because they were amazing human beings raised by amazing parents.

If our family decided to keep us is because they cared about us:

Ronaldo Cristiano
Cristiano Ronaldo’s mum has admitted she tried to abort the footballer when she was
pregnant, but the doctor didn’t support her decision. In desperation, she turned to
home remedies of drinking warm beer and heavy exercise.
'Cristiano was an unwanted baby but he's given me so much joy.'
Ronaldo’s own father was an alcoholic, something that caused immense strain on the
family.

A2: UN legal actions against child marriage

Values priorities vary according to each family and community. The values that are
taught in each continent are different, each continent has a different social
construction. For example, there are some cannibal tribes left in many places such as,
…….. or maybe, a less extreme case could be talking about how Chinese people treat
their elders with such respect they don’t even start eating until the oldest person in
the table starts him or herself. Even though on the first case we can see that there
are acts against the human life, the UN can´t take any actions because they would be
going against their cultural believes, according to …………. Of course in the second
case, which is not as extreme as the first one, some people can consider it being
respectful if you don’t do it. So this, people, is what we call a cultural barrier.
It is necessary that each family transmit their own priorities We cannot give a
standard on what is right or wrong, because that depends on people’s believes in
families throughout the world. Families teachings are the most important, it is where
the values are thought and it is important not to standardize because if we did we
wouldn’t have as much richness as we have in the world.
Understanding and respecting are the most important values that can be taught.

A3: School is part of the family’s formative plan

Parents choose schools and their focus
For this last point, our house wants to set things straight: we don’t think schools
aren’t important, of course they are, and they are extremely necessary for children’s
development and we even think they are part of the families’ formative plan,
because parents actually choose their children’s school. But we still think that what is
being taught at home is more important and that’s why parents send their children
to the schools they choose according to their beliefs. For example, an Adventist
family wouldn´t send their children to a Catholic school or a Jewish one, because they
would be taught different to what they are taught at home, so family is definitely the
main source where values and teachings come from.

Another example where we can see that schools are part of the families’ formative
plan is that in many countries, including Peru, you can find schools that represent the
“teachings” from different countries, such as Humboldt school, Raimondi school,
Franco-peruano school. These are all schools that are used in many cases for people
who come from other parts of the world and want to continue their cultural
lifestyles, languages and environments that represents their countries. This is exactly
where we can see that parents’ decisions are the most important for children
because they decide which kind of education they receive.
