Young people have generally been thought to be the country's "hope" and they are. Those of us
who have had the privilege of serving the country will eventually fade into the background, and our
young Filipino leaders will take over. Youngsters must not just wait for their turn and their responsibility
but take hold of the responsibility and the power of leadership for the country’s better future. And there is
no better opportunity to do so than the next elections in 2022.
According to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), there were 63 million local voters for the
2022 election. Some 30% of that number are from the youth sector ages 18 to 30, says Comelec
spokesman James Jimenez. Prior to the extension, Comelec registration offices and satellite sites were
lined up with long queues of voter registrants. Young Filipino voters may make a difference in next year's
national elections as they now comprise 52% of the total registered voters, he added. In response to
appeals from parliamentarians and numerous industries to allow more individuals to vote, the initial
September 30 voter registration deadline was extended to October 30. Some even reported to the venues
as early as 2 am. This meant that the extension of the registration deadline gave millions of unregistered
Filipinos more time and opportunities to sign up for next year's vote.
Young people contribute to democracy through voting, which is a vital act of civic involvement.
They must be involved in the formal political processes. While youth participation may take various
forms, it is a powerful tool for youngsters to have their voices heard and have an influence on issues that
concern them and their communities. Their votes can have a big impact and perhaps be
crucial. Youngsters have the potential to be agents of change. They can vote for a candidate who they
believe would enhance the political system. They have the authority to make decisions on how the
country will be governed. For young people, the most important question is not who they want as
president or senator in 2022, but what is the strategy, the government platform, that will allow them to
properly regain the economic gains? Thus, voting wisely means voting for your future and our country.
