 Chapter I
Preliminary
1.1 Backround
Derivative words are new words which are derived from root words. 1 Derivative words
are words that are given affixes, where when a word is given an affix, the meaning and use is
different. So for fulfill our english course assignments, we will discuss about Derivation
Word.

1.2 Formula Of the Problem

From the backroun on top, we formulate several problem formulations as follows:

1. What are Derivative Words?

2. What are the types of derivation words?

3. What are the kinds of derivation words?

4. The examples of Derivation Words and Practice Problems.

2.1 Definition of Derivation Word

Derivation is a process of forming words through the addition of affixes, which can be
in the form of a prefix or suffix. 2 The results of the formation process will produce different
meanings from the basic words.

2.2 Types of Derivation Word

In derivation word there are 3 types, as;

a. Prefix

 Prefix adalah adalah huruf atau kelompok huruf yang ditempatkan di awal kata
atau root (bentuk paling sederhana (base form) dari suatu kata — tidak dapat
diuraikan lagi) untuk memodifikasi makna dari kata tersebut.3

Axample:
Play = Main Active = Aktif
Replay = Mainkan Lagi Inactive = Tidak Aktif

b. Suffix
Suffix is an affix that is placed at the end of a word4

Axample:
Happy = Bahagia King = Raja
Happyness = Kebahagiaan Kingdom = Kerajaan

c. Infix
Infix is an affix that is placed in the middle of a word and serves to modify the
meaning of the word.5

Example :
Handful = segenggam
Handsful = segenggam penuh

2.3 Kinds of Derivation word

In derivation word there are 4 kinds, as :
a. Noun derivation
Noun derivation is a noun that is formed from a derivative process where the
noun that is formed will have a different meaning or meaning from the base
word.6

 Inform(Verb) = Memberitahukan
Inform(Verb) + Ation(Suffix)
Information (Noun) = Informasi

b. Adjective derivation
Merupakan proses pembentukan kata yang hasilnya berupa adjective (kata
sifat).7

Axample :
Use (Verb) =Menggunakan
Use(Verb) + Less (suffix)
Useless = Tidak berguna (Adjective)

c. Verb derivation
Is the result of the formation process which results in the form of Verb
Axample :
Memory (Noun) = Ingatan
Memory(Noun) + Ize (Suffix)
Memorize = Menghafal

d. Adverb derivation
Adverb derivation is the result of a formation process that results in adverb
Axample :
Slow (Adj) = Perlahan
Slow (Adj) + Ly(Suffix)
Slowly = Dengan Perlahan

2.4 Example Sentences of Derivation Word and Practice Questions

Axample :
 My Father is a worker in islamic university of Raden Fatah Palembang
Ayah saya adalah seorang pekerja di Universitas Islam Raden Fatah
Palembang
 He does the homework with slowly

3.1 Conclusion
From the material described above, it can be concluded that word derivation is a
process of adding affixes to a word. When a word is given an affix, its meaning will change
from its basic meaning.
 Derivation words have several types such as suffixes whose affixes are behind the
word, prefixes whose affixes are at the beginning of the word and infixes whose affixes are in
the middle of the word. However, many experts say that this infix does not exist.
Derivation words also consist of 4 kinds, namely noun derivatives, verb derivatives,
adjective derivatives, and adverb derivatives.

3.2 Suggestions
We realize that in writing this paper there are many mistakes. Therefore, we ask for
constructive criticism and suggestions.
