LESSON 2.1
TAKING CLIENT’S BODY MEASUREMENT

Taking body measurement is an important step in sewing clothes for

yourself and for others. Much of the success in garment construction depends
on accurate measurement. Without the right measurement, the results you
get may not be accurate.
1. Standards for Taking Body Measurement

a. Before body measurements are taken, tie

a cord or string around the waist until all
measurements have been completed.

b. When measuring, wear a close-fitting

clothing. Do not measure using bulky
clothing.

c. Your client should stand in relaxed

position so that you can get an exact
measurement.

d. Do not get your own measurement. Get

your parent or close relative at home to do the
measuring.

e. Make sure to record all your measurement

on a measurement chart so that
measurement will not get lost.

f. Pull the tape measure snug but not too

tight.

2. Tools Required
a. Tape measure – is a flexible tape with metric and English
measurement.
b. Pen / Pencil – is a common writing instrument
c. Measurement chart – chart used as guide in taking body
measurement
3. Parts of Body to be measured in

- Horizontal and Circumferential Measurement

- Vertical Measurement

TAKING HORIZONTAL BODY MEASUREMENT

Shoulder – taken from one shoulder point/

bone to another

Bustline – taken around the fullest part of the

bust

Bust Width – taken from tip of the bust to another

Waistline – measurement taken around the

natural waist
Hipline – measurement taken around the fullest
part of the buttocks

Upper Arm Girth – taken around the fullest part

of the arm in line with the armpit
Lower Arm Girth or Sleeve Width – taken
around the arm 2” or 3” below the armpit

TAKING VERTICAL BODY MEASUREMENT

Back Figure – measure from base of neck

passing back to waistline

Front Figure – taken from base of the neck passing

over the fullest part of the bust down to waistline

Bust Height or Bust Point from Shoulder – taken

from base of neck down to the tip of the bust
Sleeve length – taken from shoulder tip down to
desired length of sleeve

FOR PAJAMA PANTS

A well fitted garment starts with the right and accurate body
measurement. It is important to follow the guidelines in taking body
measurement and prepare the measurement chart before you begin to work.
1. Measurement Chart

Before you start, the first thing to do is to prepare a measurement

chart for pajama pants.

2. Body Measurement for Pajama Pants

a. Pajama pants length / Outside length –

taken from waist down to desired length of
pajama pants.

b. Rise / Crotch – distance from waist to crotch.

Rise is measured using 3 methods.

1. Put ruler under the crotch. Measure from

waist down to the level of the ruler.

2. Let the client sit on flat surfaces chair.

Measure from waist down to the level of
chair.
3. Measure from waist down to the crotch
then pull through back and up to same
level as the waist. Then divide the
measurement into two.

c. Waistline – this is taken around your

natural waist which is approximately 2
inches above your hipbone. Insert two
fingers as allowance.

d. Seat or Hip – Taken around the fullest

part of the second hip or buttock with a
tape measure. The measurement should
be divided by two to get the seat scale.

e. Bottom – taken around the leg where

length is located.

ACTIVITIES

Activity 2.2.1

Objective: Prepare two personal measurement charts correctly

Materials: Tape measure, Pen/Pencil, Notebook/Paper
Direction: Prepare two (2) measurement charts in your notebook. One (1) for
your and one (1) for your partner before taking body measurement.
Activity 2.2.2

Objective: Take body measurement of pajama pants accurately

Materials: Tape measure, Pen/Pencil, Notebook/Paper, Mobile Phone
Direction: Create a video while Taking Body Measurement. You can use your
mobile phone and send it to your teacher through email or Facebook
messenger.

LESSON 2.3- DRAFTING FOUNDATION LINES

Pattern making is very essential in making a dress. A basic or

foundation pattern can be done by drafting, a technique or method of
measuring by the given procedure using the measurement chart. Well fitted
garment was based from the drafted pattern with correct and accurate
measurements.
1. Drafting Tools and Materials

a. Tape Measure – is a flexible tape with

metric and English measurement.

b. Ruler – use to draft short straight line and

measure short distance.

c. L-square / Tailor’s square – drafting tool

with dividing measurement used to draw
perpendicular lines and determining
square corners.

d. French curve – used to shape neckline

and armhole of the pattern.

e. Pattern paper / Manila paper – a

brown paper used for pattern making.
If you find it difficult to purchase a
pattern paper or manila paper, you
can use a recycled paper like back of
old calendar in drafting your pattern.
