805 300 MW Coal Fired Hybrid Thermal Power Plant With 30 70 Solar Power Concentrator For Econ SH
805 300 MW Coal Fired Hybrid Thermal Power Plant With 30 70 Solar Power Concentrator For Econ SH
These are your unique guidelines for execution of your Design Project in your ME 425 –
Power Plant Design with Renewable Energy. Further guidance may be released in separate
instructions, to incorporate updates on guidelines issued herein as applied to each grouping.
Design instructions are to include, but are not limited to, instructions presented herein.
I. Thermodynamic Cycle
For your group, you shall employ the following thermodynamic cycles as basis for your
re-design of the existing capstone project you have submitted.
1. A hybrid thermal power plant consisting of a steam generator with an economizer and
superheater that uses a solar power concentrator (SPC). The solar power concentrator
has an output that is a function of the time of the day (from a base value at early
morning that increases gradually and then peaks for four hours constantly and
decreases thereafter until late in the afternoon). It shall employ a single stage reheat
that is equal to the superheater temperature. It shall employ regeneration with triple
extractions closed feedwater system with a deaerator prior to the boiler feed pump
(BFW) that uses extracted steam from the steam turbine, and a drain cooler after the
last FWH and prior to condenser.
2. The same as No.1 but uses an open feedwater system and a deaerator prior to the
boiler feed pump (BFW). Employ the necessary pumps in your design.
3. The same as No.2 but your SPC contributes only 30% for the economizer and 70%
superheater energy requirement. The remaining % shall come from your regular
combustion within your steam generator, meaning, your steam generator design data
will be different from the previous design.
You are to base your design data from the capstone project you have nominated, starting with
your steam generator design conditions. You shall nominate a function that will describe the
would-be behavior of your economizer inlet and superheater outlet temperatures. Your
primary independent parameter that will dictate the design of your hybrid thermal power
plant is your HP FWH and LP FWH design temperatures proportions (based on steam gen &
condenser temperature difference in your T-s diagram) (based on steam gen & condenser
temperature difference in your T-s diagram), and it will have a direct effect on the
thermodynamic parameters involved in your power plant. Nominate your deaerator and drain
cooler design conditions. Determine the most effective combination of values that will
provide for the best thermal cycle efficiencies and other favorable numbers for performance
parameters such as turbine heat rate, specific steam consumption and net work. Provide for
all the necessary mass balance calculations to come up with the desired power output.
Employ a steam generator design that will incorporate in your 3D model your solar power
concentrator. For your Design No.1 and 2, you will have your solid fuel with air burn solely
for your boiler (for your tube bank at pure boiling). Your SPC shall do all the work of the
economizer and the superheater. For your Design No.3, your design will have an effect not
only on the amount of fuel and air to be used, but the overall design of your steam generator.
Perform all basic calculations (your Design No.1 and 2 will be more or less the same but is
different from your Design No.3) such as fluid conveyance sizing, elementary heat transfer
computations, rotating equipment sizing, and fuels’ power calculations, based on the
academic reference material (Boilers for Power and Process by Rayaprolu) provided. Employ
restrictions provided for by the client standard (Saudi Aramco 32-SAMSS-021) and
government regulatory standard (ASME BPVC Sections I & II) provided. Step-by-step
calculations shall not be limited within Appendix A of the reference material but follow the
discussions on the whole book with emphasis on the presentation of the engineering
calculations on the second chapter. Choice of material shall be based on ASME BPVC
Section II and provide basis for its use. There will be no strength calculations of pressure
parts and structural elements for your steam generator. Present all data in SI units. Sizing
calculations shall be clearly presented. Employ fuel data from your capstone project
nominated.
Prepare a 3D model for your steam generator complete with component assembly and
arrangement (based on your Design No.1 only). Sizing of relevant equipment shall reflect
what you have in your calculations. Assumptions for other pertinent data requirements are
allowed, such will be incorporated on your design narrative. Place your structural elements
accordingly without prejudice to the actual dimension design if strength calculation is to be
provided. Important to take note is the arrangement of your steam generator components,
such as your fuel and air intake, boiler tube banks, steam drum, downcomers, steam headers,
nozzles, draft fans and others that are included in your calculations. Extract your 2D data and
include it in your submission.
If a 3D model is totally not possible, prepare detailed assembly and arrangement drawings of
your components of your HRSG in AutoCAD. Your 2D drawings shall be complete with
dimensions, bill of materials and other appurtenant data that will reflect what you have
calculated.
V. Other Instructions
This is a re-design of an existing power plant capstone project. Provide for a general
summary of equipment costs for all designs. Highlight what would differentiate in terms of
cost the use of open and closed feedwater heating for your power plant. Cite references for
costing data that you will use. Other capex and opex data can be referenced from the original
capstone project. Important to highlight the comparison between the equipment costing
between the cycles (No.1/No.2 & No.3) and a more detailed costing for your steam generator
design (employ generic data which can be found online for your steam generator
components).
Load demand data shall be based on your existing capstone project. Power plant capacity
shall be based on existing data. You will not be required to provide for a detailed economic
analysis, just a general presentation of equipment costing, and its variation based on the
required design.
All calculations shall be done using your REFPROP (NIST Reference Fluid Properties
Thermodynamic and transport properties database). Both spreadsheet and manual
calculations and all relevant graphs and charts, together with Relevant cycle diagrams,
equipment configurations and other drawings shall be presented in your design manuscript.
Further guidelines for formatting and other relevant instructions and list of deliverables
together with your design manuscript shall be released on Rev.1_ME 425 Design Project -
Thermofluids Design, to be released on Week 09 (11-17 October).
