- Understand key vocabulary: Go through the vocabulary (including pictures, sentences, etc) in the
Pre-listening section.
- Try to work out the meanings of the words in order to guess the topic of the talk.
- Picture and maps can help you to understand what you will hear. Look at the maps and visual clues
first and think about what you can see. Then when you listen, you will already understand some of
the contents.
If the listening test is about a topic that you know something about, you can use this information to
help you.
Step 1: Look at the questions. Predict by using what you know about the world. What do you know
about the topic? Anything you know about the topic, even in your own language, will help you.
Step 2: Look at any pictures or visual information or headings/ sub-headings. What information do
they give you about the topic?
Step 3: Any idea you have before you listen in English, or even in your own language, will help you
understand.

NOTE: Always look for clues to help you predict before you listen. Predict as much as possible
and listen to confirm your predictions.
