English-Grade 7
Reading Styles
I. Objectives
At the end of the lesson, the students should be able to:
a. Identify the reading styles and it distinguish functions.
b. Define and establish the examples of reading styles.
c. Explain how reading styles are used in students learning.

II. Subject Matter


Topic: Reading Styles
Reference: English Expressways for first year
Materials: PowerPoint Presentation, Laptop, and printed worksheets
Teaching Method: Inductive Method Visualization
Target Learners: Grade 7

III. Procedure:
A. Preliminary Activities
1. Cleanliness, orderliness and beautification of the classroom
2. Prayer
3. Checking of Attendance
4. Review of the previous lesson

B. Motivation
 The teacher will be using a Power Point Presentation to
show a short reading activity about the literary piece “The
Three Billy Goats Gruff by Peter Christen” for three
minutes, and after that, there will be a sharing of what
they’ve read.
A short reading activity of the “The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Peter
Christen” will be flashed on the screen, and later on will be having a
sharing of what they’ve read for about 2-3 minutes.

C. Presentation of Lesson
 The teacher will relate the motivational activity to the
lesson by asking the students how they’ve read and
understand the story “The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Peter
Christen” in the span of 2-3 minutes (asked at least 2-3
students).
 The teacher will introduce the idea of different reading
styles and their definitions as they relate to the construction
and determination of a text for a tale. The teacher will also
provide additional examples and information that will help
students understand and communicate information in a
more effective and efficient manner.

D. Lesson Proper
The teacher will discuss the different reading styles.
 Skimming- Refers to looking only for the general or main ideas, you
read only what is important to your purpose. Also called topic
sentences, they give you the main idea of the paragraph.
Example
If you want to read it again, read the initial lines of each paragraph and
concentrate on the stressed (bolded & italicized) terms to acquire a
better understanding of the content.

 Scanning- Look only for a specific fact or piece of information


without reading everything. It can be contrasted with skimming, which
is reading quickly to get a general idea of meaning.
Example
A student taking a reading test must swiftly scan a text on population
rates to determine whether or not a sequence of statements about
population figures are correct.

 Close Reading- Close reading differs from other approaches to


teaching comprehension where students are prepared for the reading,
for example, through a picture walk, providing a summary of the text
to be read, or through skimming and scanning of headings or front-
loading vocabulary.
Example
Teacher's questioning to guide analysis and discussion.

 Intensive Reading-Typically, this type of reading is used in the study


of English in order to intensively parse the proposed short, teaching
text. With this type of reading, grammatical constructions, unfamiliar
words and phrases are intensively examined.
Example
The learners read a short text and put events from it into chronological
order

 Extensive Reading-This type of reading implies the mastering of the


general image and the receipt of new, unfamiliar information. It will
be necessary to form and express your opinion about what you read or
answer the questions.
Example
A teacher reads a short story with learners, but does not set them any
tasks except to read and listen.

 In- depth Reading- Gain deeper meaning and comprehension of a


text.

E. Activity
Group Activity
 The students will group into two.
 Lead the two groups in guessing the statements the teacher will give,
and answer what different reading styles they are.
 The group with the most points in the answer wins this activity.

F. Application

Instructions:
 The teacher will give the students a printed worksheets
containing 10 different statements. The students are asked to
read the statements, and identify different reading styles.
 The students will also ask to create an infographic about the
different reading styles.

G. Generalization

The teacher will inquire as to how well the students comprehended the
various reading styles and how important it is to the students' learning of
reading comprehension.
H. Evaluation

The teacher will provide a worksheet and will let the students choose the
letter of the different reading styles defined in each sentence. The
teacher will also provide another worksheet scramble words wherein the
students needed to arrange in order to form the needed reading style.
