MYP Science Lab Report:: Checklist

This document provides a checklist for a science lab report for the MYP program. It outlines the key elements that should be included in each section of the lab report, including defining the problem, developing a hypothesis, describing procedures and materials, collecting and presenting data, analyzing results, and evaluating the experiment. The checklist ensures students include essential information like independent and dependent variables, controlled variables, raw and processed data tables, graphs, analysis of patterns and relationships, and evaluation of the hypothesis and experimental method.

MYP Science Lab Report: CHECKLIST

Did you write: Checkmark Did you write: Checkmark

b.iii Independent IV with unit in Data Range:

variable brackets - List the IV values in order

- Values are with units

- Discuss how you will

manipulate/change the IV
values
Dependent DV with unit in How will I measure this:
variable brackets - Explain how you measured
the DV (the focus is on the
way of measuring)
- Explain how many trials
were performed

Controlled List the controlled How will I make sure these stay
variables variables the same:
- For each CV at least one
sentence about what will be
done in the experiment for
the CV in order not to be
changed
b.i Define the Problem

Did you write: Checkmark

Testable question

- IV and DV are visible

- I asked how changing IV will affect DV
Details on a problem you want to investigate

- Definitions
- Connection between IV and DV
- Your interest in investigating the problem
- Citation of sources used in MLA format

Connection between the problem with the topic we are studying

b.ii Hypothesis: What I predict, with support from sources

Did you write: Checkmark

Hypothesis
- The form of the hypothesis is “If ….. then …… because …..”
- Details about IV and DV using the words “increase, decrease, no change”.
- Scientific reasoning in the “because” part based on (not only) prior knowledge
and research
- Citation of sources used in MLA format

b.iv Procedure: Step by step list of what I will do

Did you write: Checkmark

Procedure
- As a numbered list

- All steps of the experiment written in order

- Command statements (ex. “Pour 20 ml water...”, not “I will…” or “Then ….”)

- When and how to repeat trials

- When and how to change IV

- Drawing of the experimental setup

- Safety measures

b.iv Materials: Specific list of what I need, including quantities

Did you write: Checkmark

- Every material needed

- Quantities are included
- Units are included

c.i Raw Data

Did you write: Checkmark

In the first row

- Name of the IV with unit in brackets in the heading of the first column

- Name of DV with unit in brackets (or name of variable that you are measuring) in
the right column’s headings including numbers (1, 2, 3,...) which represent
number of trials

Rest of the table

- IV values written in increasing/decreasing order

- Units are NOT included in this part of the table

c.i Data processing: Write the formulas you use, and show a few examples

Did you write: Checkmark

- Written explanation of the formulas you will use to process the raw data

- Formulas that you will use

- Calculations for more then two examples

- Units are included

c.i Processed Data Table: A new table with only your processed data

Did you write: Checkmark

In the first row

- Name of the IV on the left with unit in brackets

- Name of the DV on the right with unit in brackets

Rest of the table

- IV values in increasing/decreasing order

- DV values after data processing

- Units are NOT included in this part of the table

c.i Graph: Attach your graph to the back of the lab write-up sheet
Did you write: Checkmark

Proper graph title.

x-axis

- x-axis is labeled; including unit in brackets, except when IV is category.

- Distance and difference between any two numbers are the same (the scale on the
axis is accurate)

- If the graph is a bar graph - width of bars and distance between bars are the

same.

y-axis
- y-axis is labeled; including unit in brackets

- Distance and difference between any two numbers are the same (the scale on the
axis is accurate)

- Line of a best fit if the graph is a scatter plot.

- The graph is made with values from a processed data table.

c.ii Patterns: Explain your data using words like increase or decrease

Did you write: Checkmark

- explanation if IV and DV are increasing, decreasing or constant.

- explanation of relationship between IV and DV (direct or indirect).

- explanation if the relationship between IV and DV is linear or not.

c. Evaluating the Hypothesis: Discuss your graph and data to evaluate if your
iii hypothesis was supported or not.

Did you write: Checkmark

- answer of the testable question.

- hypothesis and if it’s supported or not.

- evidence to support your statement about the hypothesis (data from the
processed data table)

Evidence/data from the graph:

- if scatter plot - is line increasing or decreasing and what is the meaning of that for
IV and DV

- if bar graph - explain the bars in relation to IV and DV

- if line graph - explain the line in relation to IV and DV

Citation of sources used in MLA format if you made a research to support your
conclusion.
c.iv Evaluating the Method Discuss the reliability and validity of your method

Checkmark
Did you write:
Reliability of metod

- explanation of used tools and what was measured with them (were they the
proper tools to measure the physical quantities)

- explanation of consistency of collected data (were your data same or

approximately the same in each trial, how about with data collected from your
pears)

- list all the identified errors/mistakes while conducting the experiment and explain
how they affect the results.

Validity of method

- explanation if you used the measuring tools properly (ex. when you are measuring
mass how long do you wait to record that data, how do you use ruler, stopwatch
or graduated cylinder)

- explanation of how you kept the controlled variable the same through the
experiment. Maybe you identified some errors/mistakes with the listed CVs or you
identified new CVs.

- explanation if the collected data were enough (discuss the number of trials)

- for each identified error/ mistake the level of significance with explanation why you
think so

c.v Suggesting Improvements: Suggest improvements (add as many points as

you need).

Did you write:

- realistic improvement for each mistake.

- description of each improvement.

- cited sources in MLA format if you made a research to find suggestions.
