Welcome to the Practical Research 2 Alternative Delivery Mode (ADM) Module

on Stating the Research Questions.

This module was collaboratively designed, developed and reviewed by educators

from public institutions to assist you, the teacher or facilitator in helping the learners meet the
standards set by the K to 12 Curriculum while overcoming their personal, social, and
economic constraints in schooling.

This learning resource hopes to engage the learners into guided and independent
learning activities at their own pace and time. Furthermore, this also aims to help learners
acquire the needed 21st century skills while taking into consideration their needs and
circumstances.

Welcome to the Practical Research 2 / Grade 12 Alternative Delivery Mode

(ADM) Module on Stating the Research Questions.

The hand is one of the most symbolized part of the human body. It is often used to
depict skill, action and purpose. Through our hands we may learn, create and accomplish.
Hence, the hand in this learning resource signifies that you as a learner is capable and
empowered to successfully achieve the relevant competencies and skills at your own pace
and time. Your academic success lies in your own hands!

This module was designed to provide you with fun and meaningful opportunities for
guided and independent learning at your own pace and time. You will be enabled to process
the contents of the learning resource while being an active learner.

What I Need to Know

This module will assist you to motivate, capacitate and enable the learners to realize
the importance of stating the research questions in a research undertaking.

For the learner:

The task of every researcher and investigator starts with being able to identify the
type of inquiry he/she wishes to undertake and the problem he/she desires to solve, address
or improve. In this module, the skill required in formulating clearly the research questions will
be targeted.
 At the end of this module, you are expected to:

 Identify the characteristics of a good research question.

 Distinguish different ways of stating research questions.
 Write research questions clearly.

The RIGHT Questions will get the RIGHT Answers/Responses

In Research, the heart of inquiry lies in the questions that we ask. To be assured of
getting the RIGHT answers/responses, one MUST ask the RIGHT QUESTIONS. Analyze
the set of GOOD and BAD Research questions that follow and identify the difference. The
questions you will employ in your research will spell the success or failure of your
undertaking.

The research question helps you narrow your research and write a clear, arguable
thesis. Your research question needs to be concise, arguable, and focused on your
particular topic. Before writing your research question, narrow down your topic and
brainstorm possible questions. Then, select the best question and craft it into a good
research question. As another option, choose the type of research question that fits your
purpose and format your question to fit that style.

What is It

Research Questions

A research question is an answer or response to an inquiry into a specific concern

or issue. It is the initial or first step in a research project. The 'initial step' means that after
you have developed an idea of what you want to study, the next thing you prepare for is
formulating the research question. This now becomes the first active step in the research
project.
 A good metaphor for a research project is a house. Your data collection forms the
walls, and your hypothesis that guides your data collection is the foundation. So, what then
is the research question? It is the ground beneath the foundation. It is what everything in
a research project is built on. Without a question, you can't have a hypothesis and certainly,
without the hypothesis, you will never know how to go about studying what you are
interested in.
A research question makes concrete the base of where you are going and what you
hope to find. As researchers, we have to write a good and solid research question because
if the foundation upon which our study is built on shifty, then like a house built on sand,
everything that will follow will be weak and prone to collapse. We would need to revise
endlessly and the goal of making an awesome home/research project will never be realized.

STEPS in Writing a Research Question

Writing a good research question is easy if you know the process to take.

 Specify your specific concern or issue

 Decide what you want to know about the specific concern or issue
 Turn what you want to know and the specific concern into a question
 Ensure that the question is answerable
 Check to make sure the question is not too broad or too narrow
