I. Introduction
You already know how to identify the basic electrical or electronic symbols.
Aside from the given electronic symbols that we have discussed in our
previous lesson, there are other symbols used in electronics which are
variations of the basic electrical symbols. Since there is an exhaustive list of
symbols, we will be dealing only with the very essential variations that you
need to know and identify. Are you ready to dive in the vast number of other
symbols used in electronics?
III. Objectives
At the end of the learning activity sheet, you are expected to:
1
and Electronics Engineer (IEEE std 315) and the British Standard (BS 3939). In
this lesson, you will be introduced to more variations of electronic symbols.
Variations in electrical symbols are important to specify the type of electrical
component to be used. Switches for example have different types. The switch
that we used to turn on or off our lamps at home is different from the switch
used to turn refrigerator lamp on or off. In this regard, a specific symbol must
be used to properly identify the type of electrical component to be used in the
actual circuit.
2
A transducer which converts
Motor electrical energy to kinetic
energy.
An output device used to
Bell convert electrical energy to
sound.
An output device used to
Buzzer convert electrical energy to
sound.
A coil of wire which creates a
Inductor, Coil,
magnetic field when current
Solenoid
passes through it.
Swith Symbols
A push switch that allows
Push-to-make
current to flow only when
switch
pressed like in a doorbell.
A push switch which allows
Push-to-break current to flow if not pressed
switch and will break the flow if
pressed.
Single Pole, Single throw switch
SPST, on-off switch which allows current to flow if
closed or ON position.
Single pole, double throw
switch, also known as 2-way
SPDT, 2-way switch switch, directs the flow of
current to one or two routes
according to its position.
Double pole, double throw,
which is a dual on-off switch,
DPST Switch often used to switch main
electricity because it can isolate
both the live and neutral.
Double pole, double throw. This
DPDT Switch switch can be wired up as a
reversing switch for motor.
This is an electrically operated
Relay switch.
3
Potentiometer Used to control voltage.
Variable resistor
Screw-operated variable resistor
Preset Variable that controls voltage and
Resistor cheaper than the conventional
variable resister (potentiometer)
Capacitor Symbol
Stores electric charge.
Polarized Capacitor
Diode Symbols
A diode that can be used to
Zener diode maintain a fixed voltage.
A light sensitive diode
Photo diode
