Module 3 Science Changing Matter, Solid - Liquid

This document is a science module from the Serranz Learning Center about physical changes in matter from solid to liquid states. It contains 3 objectives about describing changes in materials based on temperature effects. Examples are given of melting solids like candles and ice under heat. Students are asked to predict, observe, and record the melting of ice cubes in an activity. Other activities involve identifying items that melt under heat and observing melting of gathered objects under sunlight. The module aims to teach students about physical changes in the properties of matter.

Changing Matter
MODULE 2 Solid to Liquid
Introduction:
Did you know that matter can change its forms into another?
What do you think will happen if a solid object is placed under the heat? What
would happen next? An object can undergo different kinds of changes and these
changes may be physical or chemical changes. In this lesson you will know how
a solid object turns into a liquid object. Let’s find out!

Objectives:
Learners should be able to:
1. Describe the changes in materials based on the effect of
temperature (Solid to Liquid)

Vocabulary Words:

Physical Change- is a change in the physical appearance of an object

without any change in its composition.

Chemical Change- happens when a material changes in composition.

Composition- is any mixture of ingredients.

The physical appearance of an object may be changed in

different ways. These include cutting, breaking, folding, tearing, slicing,
sharpening, and crumpling. Another example of physical change is
melting.

Melting is the process wherein a solid object turns into liquid by the
presence of heat.

For Example:

When you lit up a candle, the candle will turn into liquid by the
presence of heat. A candle is a solid object.

Here are some examples of melting

You Can Do This!

Activity 1:
ICE- ICE BABY, MELTING CHALLENGE

Find Out: Can matter change from one form to another?

Make a Guess:

You Will Need: ice cubes or a crack of ice, transparent drinking glass,
marker

Do These:
Put the ice cubes in the transparent drinking glass.
Let them stand for several minutes. Then observe.
After the ice cubes have melted, mark the level of water in the glass
using the marker.

What have you found out?

1. What forms of matter is an ice cube?

Activity 4: Gather the objects found in the chart below and let it under
the heat of the sun. Observe what will happen to the objects you
gather. Write your observations on the chart below.
What MELTS under the sun?

Activity 4: What do you know about the properties of matter? Answer

each question.
