Learning Objective: After reading this lesson, you should be able to:

1. Explain the importance of physical education, lifetime fitness activities into a healthy
and active lifestyle.
2. Identify the objectives and values of physical education.
3. Adopt strategies to overcome barriers to physical activities.

Individual

What is Physical Education?


The term refers to an important segment of the general education which aims to
contribute to the total development of the learner through participation in selected vigorous
activities. It provides opportunities to acquire lifelong skills that are essential to physical,
mental, social and emotional development. Physical Education is the interdisciplinary
study of all areas of science relating to the transmission of physical knowledge and skills to
an individual or a group the application of these skills and their results.

It can also be viewed as a program of activities in a school curriculum that involves


sports, games, dance, gymnastics and recreation al activities. Great emphasis is placed on
motor skills, fitness health, recreation and safety. It is the vital and integral part of general
education designed to promote the optimum development of the individual physically,
mentally, socially, emotionally and mentally through the total body movement in the
performance of properly selected physical activities.

OBJECTIVE OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION


The goal of physical education is to assist the learner to develop and maintain
healthy lifestyle. The objectives of physical education are focused on the four aspects of
development, namely:
1. Physical Development Objectives – Physical fitness, which is the capacity of
the body to engage in work and play without undue fatigue, is achieved through
regular exercise and participation in varied vigorous activities.
2. Mental Development Objectives – Focus is on the acquisition of knowledge
and understanding, ability to analyze body movements and skills, evaluate game
situations and make important decisions.

3. Social Development Objectives – Participation in physical education activities
provides the opportunities for the acquisition and practice of desirable traits
necessary for adjustment to happy living and to social life in general.
4. Emotional Development – The informal nature of physical education offers
opportunities for the development of expression and emotional traits needed for
emotional mastery.

Physical Education proves it has a place to the total development of any learner as it
is concerned with the Cognitive, Affective and Psychomotor domains of growth and
development.

VALUES OF PHYSICAL EDUCATION

The value of Physical Education activities are found in resulting the development and
adjustment of the individual. Engaging in any activity stimulates in some degree the four
types of development activities although different activities emphasize different amounts.
Regular exercise and physical activity are extremely important and beneficial for long term
health and well-being.

HEALTH BENEFITS OF EXERCISE AND PHYSICAL ACTIVITIES

1. Reduce the risk of premature death.


2. Reduce the risk of developing and /or dying from heart disease.
3. Reduce high blood pressure or risk of developing high blood pressure.
4. Reduce high cholesterol or the risk of developing high cholesterol.
5. Reduce the risk of developing colon cancer and breast cancer.
6. Reduce the risk of developing diabetes.
7. Reduce or maintain body weight or body fats.
8. Reduce anxiety and depression.
9. Build and maintain healthy muscles, bones and joints. Reduce depression and
anxiety.
10. Improve physiological well-being.
11. Enhance work, recreation and sports performance.
