Lim 9x 1: Answer All Questions in This Section

This document contains a 6-part mathematics exam with questions on calculus and differential equations. Section A contains 6 multiple part calculus questions testing limits, differentiation, integration, and related rates. Section B offers a choice between two longer problems involving differential equations. Problem 7 describes a chemical process modeled by a differential equation and asks about graphing the solution curve. Problem 8 involves analyzing properties of a decreasing curve defined by an exponential function, including finding points of inflection and evaluating limits.

6. Sketch the graphs of y=5 and x
on the same axes. Show that the equation x(5 )=4
has only one real root in the interval [ 0, 1 ].

By using the Newton-Raphson method, with the first approximation 0.5, find the root of the

equation, giving your answer correct to two decimal places. [10 marks]

Section B [ 15 marks]

Answer only One question in this section.

7. In a chemical process to obtain substance B from substance A, each molecule of A is changed

directly to a molecule of B. The rate of increase of the B molecules at any time varies with the
numbers of A molecules at the point of time. Initially the number of A molecules is 2N and the
number of B molecules after the a period of t hours after the process has started is y. Assuming
that y is a continuous variable, write a differential equation that describes this chemical process.

If y = 0 when t = 0, show that y=2 N (1−e −kt ) , where k is a positive constant. [7

marks]

Sketch the graph of y against t. [2 marks]

If, after an hour, the number of B molecules formed is one third of the remaining number of A
molecules, find the time taken when the substances A and B have the same number of molecules.
