Grade: 8 / Title: Aztec Culture → ONLINE!

STAGE 1-DESIRED RESULTS

Brief explanation:
This lesson explores the ways in which the culture of the Aztecs that influenced their worldview. Students will be
learning about various aspects and features of the Aztec culture (ex. Foods, art, rituals, etc.). They will engage in
an activity of analyzing reading a poem and examining a sculpture, and explaining how they reflect the Aztec
worldview.

Big Ideas/s Inquiry Questions

Summary of Learning Activities:

○ Discussion about what is culture? What are some factors that make up culture?

○ Intro into features of the Aztec cultures
○ Q: What did the Aztecs eat?
○ Video: Poor Man’s Chocolate
○ 1:33 to 2:16 (& and maybe funny intro?)

○ *Indigenous parallels and perspectives within
○ Ex. oral tradition, resource depletion, etc.
○ Activity → students will take a few minutes to read poem and try to answer corresponding questions,
and then repeat for the sculpture. And then we’ll come together to discuss their questions and how the
aztec worldview is reflected in these pieces of their culture

warned away from using breakout groups w/ the class
