Ren

仁 comes from the two Chinese characters, ren  人  which means man,

and Ehr  二 which means "two" or "second". Based on the etymology of the word, we can derive
that Ren 仁 suggests that we are not alone in this world, or at least not meant to be alone. The
Confucian belief teaches us to be wary of our actions, and on how it might affect those who are
around us. It consists of being truthful to oneself and compassionate towards others. Empathy is
what enables someone to treat others the way they want to be treated themselves. Once we
acknowledge that we are not alone in this world and there are others whom we run into, we
realize that we have a responsibility to look out for each other. Only if everyone comes across
this word, then our world would be so much better. Ren 仁 depicts the human being's demeanor
and behavior in order to foster a flourishing society.

Our lesson on Confucianism has taught me lots of moral lessons that are applicable to our
day-to-day life. Confucianism's main premise or foundation is the necessity of developing a
strong and kind morality, which may subsequently impact the environment around us. Our
society will be peaceful and fair if the people living in it are morally impeccable. The virtue of
Ren 仁, or "consciousness-of-human-others," is used to create this moral character, which leads
to other virtuous behaviors including respect, benevolence, and humility. Confucius felt that
education was crucial in developing this noble character. He believed that individuals are
inherently good, but that they may have deviated from acceptable behavior. Confucianism’s
golden rule, “Do not do unto others what you would not want others to do unto you, “is the most
important lesson of them all. It is best regarded as an ethical guide for us living a good life and
creating a positive character.
