CHAPTER I
INTRODUCTION
Cassidy (2006), the first meaningful social network site is six degrees.com
(google.com). it was launched in 1997, it was the first social network site that allowed
users to create profiles, and list their friends and in 1998 surf the friends list. Social
networks have become a global phenomenon and attracted extensive population from
all around the world in different ages, cultures, educational levels, etcetera. In addition
to routinely checking emails, reading daily forums and Newspapers or following instant
message tools. Social networking generally tends to help one keep in touch with friends,
build groups with people around the environment or even join new groups with people
they share interest or needs. Due to the rapid increase in social networking sites,
populating by 2005 it was reported that Myspace was getting more page views than
Google, Facebook launched in 2004 became the largest Social Networking site in the
world in early 2009. Facebook was first introduced in 2004 as a Harvard Social Network
(Cassidy, 2006).

The Internet revolution changed the information world with regard to sharing,
speed, storage and retrieval of information in whatever form regardless of the person’s
location (Davies, 2017). Through the Internet a number of web technologies emerged,
and one technology that is making waves with regard to information sharing and
communication are the social media networks. The evolution of social media has cut
across all facets of society with its positive and negative impacts. Social media has
transformed and impacted on communication, learning, research and education in
general (Kayode, 2017). Among the vast variety of online tools which are available for
communication, social networking sites (SNS) have become the most modern and
attractive tools for connecting people throughout the world (Aghazamani, 2010).
Social network is a social structure made up of individuals or organization called
‘nodes’, which are tied (connected) by one or more specific types of interdependency,
such as friendship, kinship, common interest, financial exchange, sexual relationship or
relationships of belief, knowledge or prestige (Asemah and Edegoh, 2012). Social
network can also be referred to as a map of specified ties, such as friendship, between
nodes being studied. The nodes, to which an individual is thus connected, are the social
contacts of that individual; the network can also be used to measure social capital- the
value that an individual gets from the social network. Social networking sites include:
Yahoo Messenger, Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, Myspace, and so on.
These networking sites are used by most people to interact with old and new friends
(Asemah and Edogoh, 2012). The expansion in technology has also affected software,
thus leading to chatting sites known by the name ‘social media’, with social networking
sites, people can send and receive message almost immediately.
However, lack of regulation of the internet has led to its excessive use. McQuail
(2008) affirms that the internet penetrates more homes. it is a common sight to see a
youth chatting in sensitive and highly organized place like church, mosque, and lecture
venues. Some are so carried away that even as they are walking along the highway,
they keep chatting. The manufacturing and distribution of equally sophisticated cellular
phones has complicated the situation, as youths no longer need to visit a cybercafé,
they send and receive messages. He also posited that attention has shifted from visible
to invisible friends, while important ventures like study and writing are affected in the

process. This phenomenon has become a source of worry to many who believe in
knowledge and skill acquisition (Adewale, 2016). The emergence of social media as a
result of advancement in technology and expansion in interest software has raised
eyebrows among academics on its (social media) impacts on studies. Students at all
levels of learning now have divided attention to studies, as a result of available
opportunities to be harnessed from social media.
Davis and Rios-Aguilar, (2012), referred to social media technology (SMT) as
‘web-based and mobile applications that allow individuals and organizations to create,
engage, and share new user generated or existing content, in digital environments
through multi-way communication’. Through this platform, individuals and organizations
create profiles, share and exchange information on various activities and interests. An
interesting aspect of social media is that, it is not limited to desktop or laptop computers
but could be accessed through mobile applications and smart phones making it very
accessible and easy to use. For examples of these social media platforms both on the
web and mobile application include Facebook, Twitter, YouTube, WhatsApp, Instagram,
2go, blogs and so on.
Facebook, for example has over 500 million members and it is still growing and
approximately 85% of undergraduate students are Facebook users (Schneider, 2010).
These members are expected to grow since Facebook will continue to grow, and this is
not only true for Facebook, members for YouTube users closely follow as well
(University of New Hampshire, 2010). According to Sarafadeen (2017), internet usage
statistics for the world, there were 3,035,749,340 estimated Internet users with a
penetration rate of 42.3% as at June, 2014. Also, the estimated population of Africa in
2014 was 1,125,721,038 of which 297,885,898 were Internet users. The penetration of
Internet on the continent was 26.5% (Wikipedia, 2015). By December 2012, the number
of Facebook users in Africa was 51,612,460. Communicating through the internet and
social networking websites is quite different from communicating in- person- to- person
situation (Kaitlin, 2010). When users communicate through these websites, they use
things like Instant Message (IM) and chatting as well as status or Twitter updates to talk
to friends and express themselves (Kaitlin, 2010). He further opines that social
networking websites also affect the way people receive information and news. The sites

open up different portals through which people get information and create more diverse
news outlets. Due to the increased popularly of it, there is an ongoing question whether
grades of students will not be affected by how much time is spent on these sites.
MehMood and Taswir (2013), believe that the use of technology such as internet is one
of the most important factors that can influence educational performance of students
positively or adversely. Many parents and guardians are worried that students are
spending too much time on Facebook and other social media sites and have not
enough time to study. Though parents are worried about students’ constant use of the
social media sites, many students continue to utilize these sites on a daily basis

an individual placement, be it in the academic institutions or job placement. Due to this,
many people are concerned with the ways they can enhance their academic
achievement. The emphasis on academic excellence which is also prevalent worldwide
has encouraged many studies about the conditions promoting it. The role of academic
achievement as one of the predictors of one’s life success and also in the aspect of
academic placement in schools to higher institutions as well as the level of employability
in one’s career is inevitable (Kyoshaba, 2009). Academic performance, which is
measured by the examination results, is one of the major goals of a school. Hoyle
(2001) argued that schools are established with the aim of imparting knowledge and
skills to those who go through them and behind all this is the idea of enhancing good
academic performance. Academic performance or achievement is the outcome of
education, the extent to which a student, teacher or institution has achieved their
educational goals (Sarafadeen, 2017). Academic performance is commonly measured
by examinations or continuous assessment but there is no general agreement on how it
is best tested or which aspects are most important, procedural knowledge such as skills
or declarative knowledge such as facts (Annie, Howard and Mildred, 2006). Due to the
explanation above this study focus on the sway of social media exposure on academic
performance of third year Bachelor in Technical Vocational for Teachers Education
students of Southern Luzon Technological Foundation Pilar Inc.

Statement of the Problem
The rapid advancement of media technology has a great impact on the way
people communicate on daily basis. Over the years, social networking among students
has become more and more popular. The use of technology, such as internet is one of
the most important factors that implement educational performance of the students, but
most students now a days are spending too much time on Facebook and other social
media sites and have not enough time to study.
The world today is a global village in which the internet is the most important sort
of information. Since the advent of social media sites in the 1990s, it is assumed in
some quarters that the academic performance of students is facing a lot of neglect and
challenges (Osharive, 2015). The educational system in Nigeria is faced with so many
challenges which have certainly brought about a rapidly decline in the quality of
education. There is a deviation, distraction and divided attention between social
networking activities and their academic work. It is observed that students devote more
attention to social media than they do to their studies (Sarafadeen, 2017). Students’
addictiveness to social networks, students’ frequency of exposure to social network,
social media network that the students are more exposed to and the influence of social
media as a medium of interaction between students has been part of discussion in
recent times and which have imparted on their academic performance (Kayode, 2017).
Instead of students reading their books, they spend their time chatting and making
friends via the social media and this might definitely have influence on their academic
performance, because when you do not read, there is no way you can perform well
academically. Adewale (2016), It is a common sight to see a student chatting in

drastic measure by students, teacher and even educational administrators at large. It is
therefore of great importance to explore some of the trending issues facing students’
academic performance as a result of social media. Students at all levels of learning now
have divided attention to studies, as a result of available opportunities to be harnessed
from social media.
However, many researchers have conducted studies on Social Media
(Networking sites) like, Mensah (2016), worked on the impact of social media on
students’ academic performance on Malaysia Tertiary students, Osharive (2015),
researched on social media and academic performance of students in university of
Lagos, Ndaku (2013), researched on impact of social media on students’ academic
performance, Sarafadeen (2017), worked on the effects of social networking on
students’ performance, Adebiyi (2015), carried out studies on Social Networking and
Students' Academic Performance: the Role of Attention Deficit, Predictors of Behavior
and Academic Competence, Ezikiel (2013), researched on Influence of Social Media on
the Academic Performance of the Undergraduate Students of Kogi State University,
Anyigba, Nigeria, Acheaw and Larson (2013), worked on use of Social Media and its
Impact on Academic Performance of Tertiary Institution Students of Koforidua
Polytechnic, Ghana and many others. But, despite all these research efforts the impact
of social media on academic performance still persist among students in higher
institutions especially students in Southern Luzon Technological Foundation Pilar Inc.
Hence the researchers will to examine how this fast-growing trend of online social
networking services have affected the performance of students academically especially
in Southern Luzon Technological Foundation Pilar Inc. paying particular attention to
students' behavior and academic competence.
Research Questions
Based on the research problem above, the following questions postulated are to be
answered.

Researchers have conducted different studies to find out the influence of social
platforms users, for instance a study on ‘’impact of Facebook on undergraduates’
academic performance’’, stated that social platforms have negative impact on students.

is affected the more they use Facebook. Social platforms are mainly used by students
for socializing activities rather than academic purpose (Oye, 2012). In addition, (Oye,
2012) said that majority of students feel that social platforms have positive impact on
academic growth. In a different research conducted by Shana (2012) it was ascertaining
that students use platforms mainly for chatting and making friends. ‘’The consequences
of internet and social platforms on students’ academic growth’’ a study than by Young
(2006) it was seen that internet has spread its wings to reach teenager’s school life. It
was also observed by Young that students are more dependent on internet to access
info that pertain their academic life as well as entertainment. Additionally, Young said
that internet, though take a lot of time, and have less impact on studies. It was observed
by Wang (2011) that impact of social platforms rest on the degree of usage. Jeong
(2005) observed that internet addiction is significantly and negatively related to
students’ academic growth, as well as emotional attributes. Seo (2004) confirms Jeong
statement when he opined that the negative influence of internet is only on excessive
users and not on all users. Rather (2013, p. 69) avers that: the social platforms which
are being used today with great desire and enthusiasm have altered the way of using
internets in this modern age by defining online tools and utilities which allow users for
communication, participation and collaboration of information online. Today’s young
generation, especially teens and youth are using technology through innovative ways
due to which they are referred to as millennial and have changed the way they think,
work and communicate even though they are in formative years of their life. Today’s
youth because of social platforms have become technology addicts and are quite
withdrawn.
The study will enable Bachelor in Technical Vocational for Teachers Education third
year students to be aware that, apart from the social benefits of this social networking
sites, using the sites more than necessary will pose possible dangers to their health. It
will be relevant in assisting students in understanding the diversity of social media. It will

provide relevant materials for students and other researchers with more information on
the influence of social media on student's academic performance.
1. students – for students they will understand how the excessive usage of social media
affects their academic performance.
2. parents – this study will help parents understand what impacts their children’s
academic performance so they can limit the usage of internet.
3. future researchers – for future researchers who will be studying the same topic, this
study will help them formulate their research better.
The focus of this research work is to primarily study the impact of social media on
the academic performance of students. The study will comprise Bachelor in Technical
Vocational for Teachers Education third year students of Southern Luzon Technological
College Foundation Pilar Incorporated.
This study is limited to the said participants only, other students from other courses will
be excluded from this study to further analyze the impact of social media to the
academic performance of Bachelor in Technical Vocational for Teachers Education third
year students of Southern Luzon Technological College Foundation Pilar Incorporated.
Definition of Terms

Academics: Is used to describe things that relate to the work done in school, colleges,
and university, especially works which involves studying and reasoning rather than
practical or technical skills.
Connection: Most kinds of social media thrive on their connectedness, making use of
links to other sites, resources and people.
Openness: Most social media services are open to feedback and participation. They
encourage voting, comments and the sharing of information. There are rarely any
barriers to accessing and making use of content – password-protected content is
frowned on.
Participation: Social media encourages contributions and feedback from everyone who
is interested. It blurs the line between media and audience.

The advanced and improved usage of social media platforms such as Facebook
has become a worldwide phenomenon for quite some time. Though it all started as a
hobby for several computer literates’ individual have changed to become a social norm
and existence-style for students around the world (Nicole, 2007). According to Nicole,
(2007), students and teenagers have especially recognized these social media
platforms to be able to contact their peers, share information, reinvent their personas
and showcase their social lives. Facebook users often experience poor academic
performance. Also, Karpinski (2009) stated that social media has a negative association
with students’ academic performance which is much greater than the advantages
derived through the use of social media platforms. People around the globe have been
addicted to the internet which has given rise to more students using social media more
often than before. Nalwa & Anand (2003) advised and recommended that those who
are addicted users love to use the internet to set back their personal and professional
responsibilities in which the final outcome is poor academic performance. It was
highlighted in the finding of Karpinski (2009) that social media platforms (Facebook,
WhatsApp, etc.) users usually devote less time to their studies compared to non-users
and subsequently have lower GPAs. It was also mentioned by Karpinski, & Duberstein
(2009), that among the major distractions of the current generation that social media
platforms (such Facebook, Watzapp etc.) remains a major distraction. According to
Kubey, Lavin, and Barrows (2001), there is a correlation between academic
performance and the dependency on social media platforms. Davies and Cranston
(2008), enumerated some of the risks associated with social media which included

criminal activities such as identity theft and fake contacts which is prevalent today,
sexual abuse or harassment and unsuitable advertising. On the same subject O’keeffe
and Clakepearson (2011), also mentioned cyberbullying, online harassment, sexting,
facebook depression, and privacy concerns as some of the challenges associated with
social networking.
To gain a wider view of the study, a review of related literature and studies is
conducted. Books as well as published and unpublished theses and dissertation and the
use of the Internet are included in this review. These materials are in one way or
another related to the present study. Social Media Defined A few years ago, a dedicated
group of people who worked together to establish Social Media as an official stage in
the progression of New Media. An evolution that is well documented and a conversation
still continues today. As referenced in the original Social Media Manifesto published in
June 2007, “Monologue has given way to dialog.” Before Social Media was officially
“Social,” several well-known pundits observed the composition of socially-driven ideas
and technologies and as such collaborated to help document the landscape and also
define and defend Social Media as a legitimate classification for the democratization of
publishing and the equalization of influence. As the category gained momentum, it
elicited a series of opposing views and introduced new ideas as the saga unfolded. At
the same time, it also opened Pandora’s box and consequently invited the very masses
it was designed to empower to define Social Media. Years later, the definition and its
history as documented in Wikipedia are truly representative of just how much and how
little we know and also agree on its definition and its destiny. The initial entry was
submitted to Wikipedia in July of 2006 and since then there have been hundreds of
edits and iterations –most of which are inaccurate and misleading. Social Media versus
Social Network as Social Media pursues ubiquity, it is largely misunderstood and
mistakenly addresses Social and Social Network as the same thing. This guides many
practitioners away from their true opportunity and purpose. Their social compass is
unknowingly misaligned and what should point to true North may in fact, displace their
center of principles and values.

Social media is such a broad term; it covers a large range of websites. But the
one common link between these websites is that one can be able to interact with the
website and interact with other visitors. Social Network is but just one example of Social
Media websites. Social Media and Social Networks in the Philippines According to the
survey conducted by comScore, Inc., a global leader in measuring the digital world and
preferred source of digital marketing intelligence, Filipino internet users are the most
engaged in social networking online, a leading online audience measurement service in
2010. In a press statement, comScore said the Philippines has the highest social
networking usage in the Asia-Pacific region with more than 90% of its entire Web
population visiting a social networking site during the month of February 2010, followed
by Australia (89.6% penetration) and Indonesia (88.6% penetration). Why Social
Networks Became So Popular Since their introduction, Social Network Facebook,
Twitter, and YouTube have attracted millions of users, many of whom have integrated
these sites into their daily practices. While their key technological features are fairly
consistent, the cultures that International Journal of Scientific and Research
Publications, Volume 4, Issue 5, May 2014 emerge around Social Network are varied.
According to the research of Danah M. Boyd of School of Information, University of
California-Berkeley, entitled Social Network Sites: Definition, History, and Scholarship,
most sites support the maintenance of pre-existing social networks, but others help
strangers connect based on shared interests, political views, or activities. Some sites
cater to diverse audiences, while others attract people based on common language or
shared racial, sexual, religious, or nationality-based identities. Sites also vary in the
extent to which they incorporate new information and communication tools, such as
mobile connectivity, blogging, and photo/video-sharing.
The first group believes that social media have a positive effect on their
academic performance, the second group believes that social media have a negative
effect on their academic performance, and the third group believes that social media
does not have any effects on their academic performance. For instance, the positive
effects group mentioned that using social media as a way of communication in
discussing course related contents have a positive effect on their academic
performance, the negative effects group mentioned that their 74 addiction to social

media takes away from their studying time which have a negative effects on their
academic performance, and the no effects group mentioned that social media have
nothing to do with their academic performance and as long as they know how to control
their time nothing will affect their academic performance. The discussion and the results
show that the relationship between the social media use and the academic performance

the evolution of the internet has led to its usage as the best medium of communication
whereby two-third (2/3) of the internet world ‘s population visit social networking sites
(SNSs) thus serving as communication and connection tools. These networking sites
are referred to as social media (Boyd and Ellison, 2007). Social media exploded as a
category of online discourse which enables people to create contents, share them,
bookmark them and network at a prodigious rate (Jha and Bhardwaj, 2012). This has
breached the gab that existed in communication where people had to rely solely on
traditional methods such as letters and phone calls as a mode of getting in touch with
friends and relatives. Social media is fast changing the public discourse in society and is
setting trends and agenda in topics that ranges from the environment and politics to
technology and the entertainment industry (Asur and Huberman, 2010).
The study revealed that Facebook on cell phone thru Wi-Fi connection is the
common access; saving a lot of time because of easy access and transfer of data due
to collaboration with others using social networking sites were the observed effects of
social media to academic performance however, academic performance is not affected
by the respondents’ profile. The researchers recommended that schools may strictly
monitor the implementation of the prohibition for cell phone usage during classroom
discussion, and the faculty members may intensify consultation of students regarding

Saving a lot of time because of easy access and transfer of data due to
collaboration with others using social networking sites was the observed effects of
social media on academic performance. Effects of social media to academic

study examined the influence of social media usage on psychosocial behavior and
academic performance among secondary school students. The increase in internet
usage and advancement in technology, social media networking will continue to be
reckon with as part and parcel of everyday life. Social media is a vast field of
communication where barriers are fast fading while the growing need for access to data
is now of great significance. This will continue to influence activities of adolescents and
youths in particular within this global world. This unfortunately has become detrimental
to students’ academic performance and psychosocial behavior, hence on the other

(2012) Conducting a study on social networking habits among students their study
shows that such media most frequently used by Youngers and Facebook is most widely
used by a large number of communities and has multiple effects on the life of students.

According to Junco al et (2010), social media are a gaggle of internet websites,
services, and practices that support collaboration, community building, participation, and
sharing”. The growing dimension of the utilization of social media among the youth of
today can't be over emphasized. Over the years, social networking among second cycle
students has become more and more popular. It is how to form connections not only on
campus, but with friends outside of faculty. Social networking may be a way that helps
many of us feel as if they belong to a community. Due to the increased popularity of it,
economists and professors are questioning whether grades of scholars aren't suffering
from what proportion of time is spent on these sites.
According to Lenhart et al., (2010), about 57% of social network users are 18-29
years old and have a private profile on multiple social media websites. In a study by
Pempek, Yermolayeva, and Calvert (2009), the quantity of your time spent daily on
social network sites varied greatly. However, an analysis of the info indicated most
participants spent approximately thirty minutes a day socializing, mostly during the
evening hours between 9p.m to 12a.m students spent a mean of forty-seven minutes a
day on Facebook. More than 50% of school students use social networking sites
several times each day. Quan-Haase and Young (2010), found that 82% of school
students reported logging into Facebook several times each day. Younger students use
Facebook more frequently than older students to stay in-tuned with friends from high
school or from their hometown.
The researchers presented various related literature and studies regarding the
study. In order to have a better understanding of these literature and studies, the
researchers aim to connect the previous studies to present studies with their similarities
and how they differ from present one.
One of the similarities was focused on how students get affected by social media,
and how it impacts their academic performance. Students’ academic life has moved to a
different dimension since the introduction of these social media networks and several
studies have affirmed that social media plays an important role on students in higher
education including the study conducted by Wheeler, Yeomans and Wheeler, (2008);

Rifkin, Longnecker, Leach and Ortia, (2009). In their study, they recognized four (4)
major advantages of social media usage by students in higher education which
included; enhancing relationships, improving learning motivation, offering personalized
course material, and developing collaborative abilities.
From (manifesto published in June 2007 to Boyd & Ellison2007- jha &
bhardwaj2012 - asur &huberman 2010) Socially driven ideas & technologies
collaborated to help document the landscape, define and depend social media as a
legitimate classification for the democratization of publishing the equalization of
influence it all depends on the study of students if they're having so much time on social
media rather than studying there topics or lesson on social media It also more on online
discourse, create contents and share the ideas and information thru Facebook and the
use of Wi-Fi connection to easy access and transfer of data and topic related to other
students. Conduct statistics about student’s interactions in social networking service
(SNS) and performance in their academic matters. It analyzes the effects of using the
social media platform using surveys about people involved in social media. States that
social media platforms are the best medium for communication.
On the contrary, social media such as facebook users often experience poor
academic performance, it's more on negative effects because addiction to social media
takes away from their studying time which affects their academic performance.

criminal activities, identity theft & fake contacts, sexual abuse or online harassment,
unsuitable advertising, cyberbullying, sexting and Facebook depression. Additionally, it
affects and changes such as the social-norm and existence-style for students of social
media platforms. The platform also serves as communication for people and shows
risks associated with the social media platforms.
As per Paul, Baker and Cochran (2012), the time spent on social media was
dependent on the attention span of the students. Attention span is the amount of time
for which students can concentrate on their study without getting distracted. They found
out that, higher the attention span, lower is the time spent by students on social media.
As per Junco (2011), time spent on Facebook was very strongly negatively related to

the overall GPA of the students. Kirschner and Karpinski (2010) found out that over
indulgence with social media can affect students’ academic performance negatively.
Davies and Cranston (2008), enumerated some of the risks associated with
social media which included criminal activities such as identity theft and fake contacts
which is prevalent today, sexual abuse or harassment and unsuitable advertising. On
the same subject O’keeffe and Clakepearson (2011), also mentioned cyberbullying,
online harassment, sexting, facebook depression, and privacy concerns as some of the
challenges associated with social networking. Cyberbullying: cyberbullying is a category
of bullying that occurs in the digital realm or medium of electronic text. ‘‘It is any
behavior performed through electronic or digital media by 9 individuals or groups that
repeatedly communicates hostile or aggressive messages intended to inflict harm or
discomfort on others’’ (Tokunaga, 2010). Cyberbullying is one the serious threats in the
social media environment and has called for a number of studies to determine its
causes.
Aside from these effects, other studies conducted by scholars have also proved
that social media can be detrimental to students’ academic life if caution is not taken in
its usage. For instance, the study conducted by Obi, Bulus, Adamu and Sala’at (2012),
titled “The need for safety consciousness among Youths on social Networking Sites”
concluded that social media affects students' use of English. They use short-handwriting

when chatting with friends and unconsciously get used to it thereby replicating the same
errors during examinations. Even though one may argue that these are minor
challenges, it is important to acknowledge the increasing rate at which these errors are
replicated in the education sector and if care is not taken future generations may see it
as a norm. Indeed, a number of studies including but not limited to the 10 study of
Kuppuswamy and Shankar (2010), Osharive (2015), Maya (2015), among others have
revealed unequivocally that social media can be problematic to students’ academic life if
caution is not taken in its usage.
CHAPTER III
Methodology
Research Design
This chapter will make use of qualitative research aimed to gain a deep
understanding of a specific organization or event, rather than a surface description of a
large sample of a population. It aims to provide an explicit rendering of the structure,
order, and broad patterns found among a group of participants. The researchers' test
has been given to the students to identify the impact of social media on academic
performance of the Third year in Bachelor of Technical Vocational Teachers Education
students. The research uses a questionnaire to indicate the result of this thesis.
Research Site
The respondents of this study are the Third year Bachelor of Technical
Vocational Teachers Education of Southern Luzon Technological College Foundation

Inc. of Academic year 2020-2021. The researchers chose the Third year BTVTEd as the
respondents to see and identify the impact of social media on academic performance of
the students. This study covers 25 students of BTVTEd A and 25 students of BTVTEd B
with the total of 50 respondents. This research only covered the impact of social media
on academic performance of Third year BTVTEd students.
Sources of Data
This study used primary and secondary sources of data. Primary source of data
is gathered from BTVTEd 3A and B with the total number of 50 respondents. The
Secondary source of data are internet, undergraduate thesis, magazines and other
related sources of data.
Sampling Techniques
Research Instrument
The instruments used were questionnaires made by the researcher for effective
and flow less data collection. The questionnaires used were prepared by the researcher
corresponding to the statement of the problem of this study. The instrument covers the
personal profile of respondent - Name, Age, Gender and Year lever. This method was
widely used to extract the most relevant information.

In gathering data, the researchers prepared a letter of approval addressed to Mr.
Jiro Montales (SLTCFI Registrar) to get the master list of the Bachelor of Technical
Vocational Teacher in Education third year college students of Southern Luzon
Technological College Foundation Pilar Incorporated.
The researchers will use questionnaires and checklists regarding the impact of
Social Media on academic performance of 3rd Year BTVTED students of Southern
Luzon Technological College Foundation Pilar Incorporated. The total numbers of
respondents are 50. The study only covers the impact of social media with regards to
the academic performance of BTVTED third year students.

Chapter IV
The questionnaire survey was taken on May 2,2021 through Google forms. The
survey questionnaire includes 12 questions that will be distributed to and answered by
the 50 BTVTEd students from SLTFPI, this is chapter 4, which will discuss how the
survey was planned and carried out.

The figure 1 shows that the majority of the students (about 98%) have owned
gadgets and only one (1) out of 50 students don't own any gadget.

As shown in this figure, there are 21 students (42%) have used social media
very often and the remaining 29 students (58%) are often used social media.

As shown in the figure, 5 students (10%) spent an hour on surfing and chatting,
16 (32%) spent 1 to 2 hours, 18 (36%) for about 3 to 4 hours and 13 students (26%)
spent 4 hours and more on surfing and chatting.

The chart revealed that there are 42 students (84%) are satisfied on information
from browsing on social media, 13 students (26%) are satisfied on affiliation, and 37
students (74%) has been satisfied on entertainment.

As shown in the figure, there are 18 students (36%) thinks that the effect of
prolong usage of social media is gaining low grades, 35 (70%) students thinks that it
would one’s academic performance, and 20 students (40%) thinks that the effect leads
to incomplete academic activities.

The figure has shown that there are 27 students (54%) answered yes, and that
social media is beneficial to their academic performance, only 1 student said no, and 22
students (44%) said maybe.

Summary
The broad objective of the study was to find out the impact of social media on
academic performance of 3rd year BTVTEd of Southern Luzon Technological College
Foundation Pilar Incorporated of which majority of the respondents were female (74%),
while 26% were male. The researchers used the qualitative method to gather data from
a total sample size of fifty (50) students. The questionnaires served as the instrument
for collecting data.
Findings
1. The findings first and foremost revealed that the majority of students of Southern
Luzon Technological College Foundation Pilar Incorporated, third year BTVTEd
have owned gadgets and are well exposed to social media networks; 44
respondents (88%) used android phones, 2 respondents (4%) used computer, 6
(12%) used laptop, and 5 (10%) used other gadgets and/or devices. All 50
respondents are aware and use one social media platform or the other. All the 50
respondents are on Facebook. Other major social media platforms used by the
students are instagram and twitter. This corroborates the findings of Wiley and
Sisson (2006), that previous studies have found that more than 90% percent of
tertiary school students use social networks. With regards to how often they use
social media, 21 respondents (42%) said that they used social media very often
and the remaining 29 participants (58%) said that they used social media often.
In connection to time spent on surfing and chatting; 5 participants (10%) spent
only one hour, 16 (32%) spent to one to two hours, 18 (36%) spent 3 to 4 hours
and 13 (26%) spent 4 hours and above. It can be deduced that majority of the
students; (36%) spent over 3 to 4 hours on social media on a daily basis and this
comes with implications as it was earlier revealed by the study conducted by
Kirschner and Karpinski (2010), that over-involvement or obsession with social

networking sites (SNSs) by students can have negative impacts on their
academic performance.
2. A total of 42 students (84%) specified that they have been satisfied by
information through browsing on social media, 13 students (26%) also have been
satisfied by affiliation, and 37 students (74%) by entertainment.
3. Most of the 3rd BTVTEd students declared that social media is beneficial to their
academic performance with an average percentage of (54%) and (44%) are
conceivable.
Conclusion
1. Based on the results, social media is and will continue to be a vital tool for every
student as far communication, seeking information and entertainment are
concerned. It will indeed influence and benefit their academic career depending
on the purpose.
2. The identity of social media as a functional servant but a threatening master has
been exposed in the findings that, despite the benefits that students can harness
from social media networks such as sharing of information, building relationship,
partaking in group discussions from near and far among others, there is to some
extent addiction and distraction of attention caused by the use of social media
which could have serious consequences on the academic life of students such as
having low grades, having incomplete activities and poor academic
performances.
3. This study revealed that the students’ usage of social media is not meant only to
acquire academic information but also seeking for entertainment and a medium
of communication with others. In line with that, they are aware of the possible
outcomes of too much usage of social media that would surely affect their
academic career.

Recommendations
Based on the findings of this research study, the researchers’ recommendations are as
follows:
1. Students should exercise caution and moderation when using social networking sites
to ensure that they do not jeopardize their academic performance. Students should
strike a balance between socializing and academic pursuits. To achieve balance, the
effect of social media on student academic success should concentrate more on the
positive side than the negative side.
3. Students must limit their time spent on social media to avoid being addicted to these
platforms for any futile things online.
4. Teachers and other authorized individuals should also limit access to such social
media platforms that may be vulnerable to diverting students' attention during school
hours to reduce their use.
5. Lecturers and teachers should/can use new techniques such as pointing tasks or
conversations to social media channels to help students develop the habit of using
these sites for academic purposes.
