Skills
69 Read the article about memory and circle A or B in the statements below.
Training your memory is not difficult. In fact, it’s really easy, and the good news is, that the more you train
your memory, the easier it becomes to train! Your memory improves the more you use it, and it grows bigger
the more things you remember. So there’s no reason not to improve your memory. Here are eight easy tips
to train your memory, anyone can do them, and you can start immediately.
Tip 1. Be positive. Tell yourself your memory is excellent and that you can memorize more. Being negative
will stop your memory from working well.
Tip 2. Repeat the information you want to remember as often as possible. You can do this anywhere, in
traffic, on the bus, when you are exercising, or when you are waiting for someone.
Tip 3. Try to remember information in different ways. For example, write it down, turn it into a song and sing
it, turn it into a dance and dance it.
Tip 4. Your body remembers things as well as your mind, so use your body to help you. Go for a walk when
you are trying to memorize things. Use movements to help yourself remember important things.
Tip 6. Make connections between things in your memory. Look for repeated letters or sounds in the things
you are trying to remember. Make connections between new information you want to remember, and old
information already in your memory.
Tip 7. Some foods are healthier for your memory. For example, eating fish helps your memory, and so does
food with lots of vitamins A, C, and E. Drinking lots of water is also good for your brain.
Tip 8. Don’t put pressure on yourself. When you put pressure on yourself, your memory gets stressed and
doesn’t work. Try to relax, breathe deeply, and enjoy using your memory.
3 Your memory
A important.
B not important.

71 Read about a motorcycle club. Complete the sentences below with the correct number or date.
The Grand Riders is a club for motorcycle riders in Taiwan. There are many clubs for motorcycle riders in
Taiwan, but this one is very special because most of its members are over 65.
The club started in 2007, when one of the members, Mr. Wang, 82, decided that he wanted to do something
exciting with the rest of his life. He decided to go on a motorcycle trip around the island of Taiwan with 16 of
his friends.
They trained for the long trip altogether. Some of them didn’t know how to ride a motorcycle so they learned
how to do it for the first time. Some of their families were worried that the trip was too dangerous for people
of their age, but they didn’t listen and began their journey. The Riders drove 567 miles in 13 days on small

roads. They had a great time and all returned safely after the ride.
Two years later, a local bank heard about the Grand Riders and decided to make a video about their
adventures. The video showed five elderly men going on a trip around the island of Taiwan to let everyone
know that old people can still enjoy life and do exciting things. When it was put on YouTube, more than one
million people viewed it, and the old folks became world-famous. Now there are other Grand Rider clubs in
other places around the world.
Although now some of the original Grand Riders are dead now, the club is growing and growing and the ride
around the island of Taiwan happens every year and attracts more and more older people, both men and
women. The oldest Grand Rider is Mr. Miao, 94, who says: "Riding around Taiwan is the best present to
myself."

The Agency has grown very fast, and now the company has offices in London, Manchester and Stockholm,
and has 15 employees. This year, the Agency opened a training school for lady detectives, and the classes

job is very interesting,” she says. “Every day is different. Tomorrow I’m going to help a man find his dog, and
then I’m going to the US on Friday for a new case.”
In the future, Rebecca Jane intends to open an office in the US. “I have an American client who asked me to
help find her husband. She came to me because there are no female detectives in the US, and she felt more
comfortable talking to a woman about her missing husband. There may be more women like her who need
our help.”

Gustavo and Julie have been married for 35 years – twice. They first met in New York, when Gustavo was a

After they got divorced, Gustavo went back to La Paz, his hometown in Bolivia and married someone else.
Gustavo and his Bolivian wife had three children. Julie started her career, and although she had a

all those years. Julie was single now, but Gustavo was still married. Gustavo decided to get divorced and

77 Read the brochure and circle T (True) or F (False) next to the sentences below.
Vacation in Taiwan
Yang Ming Mountain is a mountain outside the city of Taipei in Taiwan. Most visitors say their visit to the
mountain is the best part of their trip to Taiwan. Yang Ming Mountain is actually a volcano. The volcano is
not active now, but you may experience an earthquake during your visit, because Taiwan is in an active
earthquake zone. North Taiwan has a warm climate, but in the winter it can be really cold, so you might need
to bring warm clothes with you. Between June and September, you might experience a typhoon.
Morning
In the morning, we will meet at the Yang Ming Visitors’ Center, and there will be guides to answer your
questions about the mountain and its history. In spring, the mountain is covered in flowers and you can see
cherry blossoms. In summer, you might see the famous chestnut tiger butterflies
Afternoon
There are many walking trails on the mountain. You may want to take the JinBao Li History tour, where you
will see beautiful bridges and temples. There are also many Buddhist monasteries and temples, so you will
probably see some Buddhist monks on your walk.
Evening
In the evening there are two options. We might visit a hot spring so you can relax in the naturally heated hot
water, or we might go to one of the many restaurants on the mountain and try some of the local food and
look at the wonderful night views of Taipei City.

78 Write travel tips for visitors to your country. Include advice about what to bring and why.
Do you know what to do if someone is choking? If someone is choking, it is because they have something
stuck in their throat that is blocking their air passage. If you don’t do something to clear their airway, the
person will die. There are two techniques for unblocking someone’s airway: “The Heimlich maneuver” and
“The Backslap”.
“The Heimlich maneuver” is very easy to learn. First, you need to get the person who is choking to stand up.
Then, stand behind the person who is choking and put your arms around them, clasping your hands together
right in front of their stomach. Here’s the next step. Pull your hands together up and in, with a quick, sudden
movement. If you do the maneuver correctly, the object blocking the airway will come out. Be careful,
though, don’t do it too hard – you might break the person’s ribs.
The second technique is “The Backslap”. This technique works if the person who is choking is sitting or
standing. First, you need to get behind them and, if you can, get them to lean forward a little. Then, hit them
with your forearm directly between the shoulders. Be careful that you don’t hit them on the neck, hit them just
between the shoulders toward the middle of the back. If the object which is blocking the airway doesn’t come
out, try the backslap again.
You can practice on your friends – carefully. You never know. You might save someone’s life one day!

HOW TO DEAL WITH NERVES
There are many ways to help you deal with your nerves. You will need to find the way that’s best for you.
From our experience, here are some of the best methods to calm yourself during a presentation.
Tip 1:
Practice. If you practice a lot before your presentation, you will as nervous because you will be prepared and
you will feel more confident. Practice as much as possible. And don’t forget to practice with the equipment.
Tip 2:
Before you begin the presentation, check the equipment carefully. Do this before the audience arrives in the
room. Is the microphone working? Turn on the projector. Get your slides ready. If you know that all the
equipment is working well before you begin, this will make you feel more confident.
Tip 3:
During your presentation, don’t forget to breathe normally. A common mistake is for people to take big
breaths. This will make you more nervous. Another mistake is not to breathe enough. Breathe normally and
while you are breathing, try to imagine a peaceful scene. This will help you to relax.
Tip 4:
Smile. Smiling has a positive effect on you and on your audience.Smiling makes you feel better and more
relaxed. You will find the audience smiling back at you if you smile at them.
Tip 5:
Walk around. If you feel very nervous, walk around the room while you are talking. This will help you with
your breathing, and it will help you to relax your muscles. Also, when the presenter moves around, it gives
the audience something else to look at. Staying in one place all the time might make you feel anxious.
Tip 6:
Interact with the audience. This means that you should talk to them and let them talk to you. Let them ask
you questions if they want to. This doesn’t mean they don’t like your presentation. It means that they find you
easy to listen to.

85 Read the magazine article about the history of sugar. Number the sentences in the correct order.
Sweet History
Sugar comes from Southeast Asia and was first produced in India in very ancient times. It was first used as a
juice until it was discovered how to turn the juice into sugar crystals in the 5 th century. The first sugar
plantations were established in China in the 7 th century. Sugar was first brought to Europe by the soldiers of
Alexander the Great who brought it back with them from India. During the 12th century, sugar was grown by
the Venetians in the Middle East, and Venice became the main supplier of sugar to Europe.
Sugar cane was taken to America by Christopher Columbus and was grown there. The Portuguese also took
sugar cane to Brazil and grew sugar there. Slaves were taken from Africa to America to grow the sugar. The
sugar from America was then imported back to Europe and, by the 19 th century, sugar was eaten by
everyone. Jacub Rad invented sugar cubes in 1843. Now, sugar is found in nearly all kinds of food.
Unfortunately, it causes obesity.
Sugar was used as a juice until someone discovered how to turn juice into crystals.

Frida Kahlo is a Mexican artist who was born in 1907 and died in 1954. Her life was short and difficult, but
very creative. At the age of six she got polio, an illness that effected her left leg. When she was young, she
wanted to be a doctor and studied hard.
In 1925, Frida was on a bus when it had a terrible accident. She suffered many injuries, including a broken
back and a broken pelvis. Her right leg was broken in 11 places. She spent 3 months in bed getting better
and had 35 operations. All her life, she suffered pain.
While she was in bed recovering from her accident, Frida started to paint. She began painting to express her
pain. She painted 55 self portraits, and many other paintings. In 1938, she traveled to the US to have an
exhibition of her paintings in a gallery there, and in 1939, she had an exhibition in Paris. The critics did not
give her art good reviews. After her death, her art became more famous and popular.

got married that year, and got divorced in 1939. But they got married again in 1940.
