Module 3 - Plumbing Distribution System Component

The document summarizes the key components of a plumbing supply distribution system, including: 1. Pipes made of materials like PVC and PPR to transport water and sewage. 2. Pumps to provide water from underground sources to buildings. 3. Valves like gate valves and ball valves to control water flow and isolate parts of the system. 4. Storage tanks for treated water and pressure, including residential and industrial tanks. 5. Water meters to measure water usage and fittings to install meters. 6. Chambers to house valves and other components for access during maintenance.

MODULE 3

Plumbing Supply / Distribution System

October 05, 2021

Types and Components in a Plumbing Supply Distribution System

Distribution system infrastructure is generally considered to consist of the following;

1. Pipes -
Blue pipes are used in water systems must be approved for potable or drinking water.
The pipe is made of some kind of PVC, it is very flexible so you can handle it with
ease. Green pipes are sewer and drain lines.

Due to advent of technology, PPR pipes had been introduced to replace the Blue
pipes due to ease of installation. PPR pipe is a straight and rigid cylindrical pipe,
made from Polypropylene Random Copolimer plastic.

2. Pumps – Water pumps are necessary for residential, commercial buildings and
industrial plants for providing water from underground sources. The water pumps
are very basic in our day by day life.
3. Valves

Valves are used throughout the distribution system. Valves are used to isolate
equipment, buildings, and other areas of the water system for repair as well as to
control the direction and rate of flow. They are used to drain the system for seasonal
shutdown. There may be many types of valves in a water system.

Check valves are used to control the

direction of water flow. Gate
valves and ball valves stop water flow.
4. Storage tanks –
Small water systems have many storage tank choices depending on volume needed,
site access, system pressure. Water tanks may provide storage for treated water,
chlorine contact time, and / or water pressure for the distribution system.

Pressure Tanks - The pressure tank in a private water

system has three purposes. It stores water and provides
water under pressure when the pump is not running. It
builds up a reserve supply of water so the pump starts
and stops less often, prolonging the life of the pump. In
addition, it provides a reserve supply of water for use
during times of high demand.

5. Water meters & fittings –

Water meters are used to measure the

volume of
water that passes through them. All
consumer
connections should be metered. Water meters should
be correctly sized and installed strictly in accordance
with the manufacturer’s requirements. Meters should
be read on a monthly basis, preferably at the same
time of the month. Meter readings should be
verified to ensure that they do not contain errors
before the readings are used to bill consumers.

Water meters are usually

installed within the premises of
the building it served for easy
access.
6. Chambers –

Chambers are used to house network fittings and components that need to
be accessed for operational and maintenance purposes. Chambers may be
constructed from reinforced concrete, bricks, cast iron or even plastics in the
case of small chambers such as meter boxes.

Valve and component chambers should comply with the following requirements: •
Have adequate space for workers to install, remove and work on pipes and
fittings installed.
• Where air valves are installed in the chambers, adequate provision for air
movement in and out of the chamber.
• Roof slabs and access openings should allow all installed components to
be removed and reinstalled, and should be able to handle the
anticipated load-ing on them.
• Preferably stand proud of the ground level to ensure that storm water
cannot enter the chamber.
• Anchoring of pipes in the valve chamber walls, and allowance for
differential settlement between the pipe and
