Chapter (1) Introduction to Mechatronic Automation Mechatronic Automation

 Definition:
o Mechatronics: the word mechatronics is the composed of mecha from mechanics
and tronics electronics.
o Automation : Auto (Self) + Moving
 What is Mechatronics ?
Mechatronics is the synergistic integration of sensors, actuators, signal conditioning,
power electronics, decision and control algorithms, and computer hardware and
software to manage complexity, uncertainty, and communication in engineered
systems.

Chapter (1) Introduction to Mechatronic Automation Automation Definition

 What is Automation?
o The word automation comes from the Greek word “automatos,” meaning self-
acting.
o Automation refers to a mode of operation in which any machine or piece of
equipment is capable of working without human intervention.
o Automation as a technology concerned with the use of mechanical , electrical,
electronic , and computer based system to control production process
o Automation involves a mechanical device that can imitate the actions of people or
animals.

Chapter (1) Introduction to Mechatronic Automation

 Typical components of a mechatronics system

 Automation as a technology concerned with the use of mechanical , electrical,

electronic , and computer based system to control production process
7
Mechatronic Automation Dr. Ali M. Gaballa
Chapter (1) Introduction to Mechatronic Automation

 Typical components of a mechatronics system

 Actuators produce or cause action.

 Actuators are usually electrical, Hydraulics, and Pneumatics.
 Actuators transform electrical signal into mechanical outputs.
 Sensors detect the state of system parameters, inputs and outputs.
 Sensors are required to monitor the performance of machines and processes.
 Electrical systems are concerned with behavior of three quantities, charge current and
voltage.
 The input signal conditioning and interfacing system provide connection between the
control circuits and input /output devices.
 Real time interfacing includes analog to digital and digital to analog conversion.
 The overall control of the system is carried out by digital control.

Chapter (1) Introduction to Mechatronic Automation

 Elements of Mechatronics : Electromechanical

 Actuators
DC servomotors, stepper motors, solenoids, Hydraulics, and Pneumatics
 IC-based sensors and actuators (digital-compass, -potentiometer, etc.).
 Pneumatics is a method to transfer energy from one point to another using
actuators which are driven by fluids under pressure.

 Pneumatic systems use pressurized gases to transmit and control power.

 Pneumatics actuators, gripper technology, control valves and pneumatic
circuit representation.
