Unit 1 Evaluation
Unit 1 Evaluation
During the course of the 8 weeks at the start of unit 1, I learnt a range of new
skills and techniques I’d like to put forward to my future projects and some of
which I used for my 4-week project at the end of unit 1.
Firstly, I started experimenting with Premiere Pro, an Adobe application that
specialises in video editing. As I was experimenting I learnt how to reduce or
increase footage by milliseconds, increase or decrease the speed, add effects
including blur, fading out and zooms. I also learnt how to cut together and import
sounds and music to a video. Leading on from Premiere Pro, another Adobe
application, After Effects, is an app I wanted to use badly as it closely relates to
my ideal career as a VFX artist. Whilst working in After Effects I learnt how to
mask and layer images and video over one another to create a seamless effect of
both assets being a part of one video. However, there is much more to learn for
future projects.
Next, I worked with Simon to produce a screenprint of a design I had created using
the pen and line tools in Photoshop, another Adobe application I got to explore
more with since A-Level Photography. My screenprint came out a bit patchy which
was due to overwashing the canvas but a teacher did use a pressure washer on it.
In the future, I will use a larger pattern or image as to not face this issue again.
Next, I worked with Sarah to learn briefly how to use a video camera, video and
production techniques including; tracking, trucking and holding the camera steady.
In the same week, we covered studio lighting with George which taught me the
basics of using lighting equipment in the studio which I had not leant into much
during A-Level Photography. Furthermore, using the lighting and video techniques
I had learnt I created a short stop-motion film using a stick figure, however, there
is more to learn and experiment with this complicated process.
Lastly, I jotted down sketches for horror locations and characters to experiment
with the limits of character and set designs. I scouted a location I was going to
recreate using a CAD (computer-aided design) application however, due to the
lack of equipment and limited time I wasn’t able to complete this so I sketched the
hallway instead. There is much more to cover here including simple tips to
improve sketching and design.
4 Week Project
For my 4 week project, I created a short film titled “The Omniscient” which is
about unknown surveillance of a nameless boy by a stalker/ hacker which tracks
the boy’s movements, actions, phone conversation and sleeping patterns.
Throughout the creation of this short film, I used my skills and the techniques
developed and learnt during the Eight 1-day projects to help bring this piece
together. I used what I had learned during the basic video techniques and studio
lighting sessions to shoot all the scenes featured. I used the studio to record the
laptop from the outside and a make-shift tripod to hold up the camera during the
other scenes from the laptop camera’s POV. I used Premiere Pro mostly to edit the
project using After Effects once in conjunction to create the waveform effect
during the “He Hears All” sequence. In Premiere Pro I used the techniques learned
to cut, rearrange and import music into my project.
Unit 3
This past unit has prepped me for unit 3 by bringing me up to speed with the skills
required to create a full project within an extended time frame. The problems I’ve
had to overcome and the skills I’ve learned including the prep and research for a
project like this will help me create a more ironed out final outcome at the end of
unit 3. For unit 3, I plan on creating a music video with my own music or a blend of
a song I listen to and a song of my own. I will try to record most of it myself and I
will also be the producer, director, writer, songwriter, performer and editor across
this entire project. This will require the input of the skills learned in unit 1 and
new skills including recording music and mixing in the college studio. This brings
me closer (like the After Effects practise) to another possible future close to my
heart which is creating my own music.
