Triple Combination Tool String: Description

The Triple Combination tool string consists of a series of Schlumberger logging tools that measure formation density, porosity, and resistivity. Specifically, it measures density, porosity, deep, intermediate, and shallow resistivity, natural gamma radiation, hole size, and fluid temperature in a single pass. The main components are the Hostile Environment Natural Gamma Sonde, Accelerator Porosity Sonde, Hostile Environment Litho-Density Tool, Dual Induction Tool, and Temperature/Pressure/Acceleration Tool. It is usually the first tool string run into an open borehole to evaluate borehole conditions.

Triple Combination

Tool String
Description HNGS-BA
Hostile Environment
The Schlumberger Triple Combination Tool String ("Triple Natural Gamma Sonde

Combo") consists of a series of Schlumberger logging

tools combined to provide a broad suite of in situ physical
property measurements in an uncased borehole. The APS-BA
Accelerator Porosity Sonde
term “Triple Combo” is derived from the three principle
measurements collected by the tool string: density, porosity
and resistivity. Specifically, the Triple Combo is designed
to measure formation density, porosity, deep/intermediate/ HLDT
shallow resistivity, natural gamma radiation, hole size, and Hostile Environment
Litho-Density Tool
fluid temperature, all in a single logging pass.

♦ Clay typing
♦ Mineralogy identification
♦ Ash layer detection

♦ Formation porosity
♦ Lithologic determination TAP

Hostile Environment Litho-Density Tool
♦ Porosity estimation
♦ Seismic impedence calculation Schematic illustration of the Triple Combo
tool string and its primary components.
♦ Lithology and rock chemistry definition
Dual Induction Tool
Deployment Notes
♦ Porosity estimation
♦ Density and velocity reconstruction In ODP, the Triple Combo is always the first tool string
run into the open borehole to ascertain the condition
♦ Lithologic boundary definition and textural changes
of the hole. The modular nature of the Triple Combo
Temperature / Pressure / Acceleration Tool affords great flexibility with regard to tool substitutions
♦ Geothermics and additions/deletions. For example, third party tools
♦ Hydrogeology such as the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory’s High
Resolution Gamma and TAP tools have been run in-line
with the Triple Combo.
