Lesson Plan For Math

The lesson plan introduces second grade students to telling time on analog and digital clocks. Students will learn the differences between analog and digital clocks, and the key components of an analog clock including the hour and minute hands. Through a video, worksheets, and hands-on practice with analog clocks, students will practice identifying times to the hour and half hour on both clock types. Formative assessments include worksheets where students match analog and digital times. The lesson is differentiated for students who may need floor seating or extra practice time.

TCNJ Lesson Plan

Introducing Time

Student Name: Nikita Garbayo School Name: Parkway Elementary School

Grade Level: Second Grade Host Teacher’s Name: Mrs. Cornelius

Guiding and/or Essential Questions:

● How do we tell time?

● How do we read an analog clock?
● How do we read a digital clock?

Pre-lesson Assignments and/or Student Prior Knowledge (ex. background knowledge,

possible misconceptions, prior lesson content)

● Students should be familiar with the digital clock in the classroom

● Some students may be familiar with an analog clock
● Students may have not been introduced to time previously

Standards:
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.1.MD.B.3
Tell and write time in hours and half-hours using analog and digital clocks.
CCSS.MATH.CONTENT.2.MD.C.7
Tell and write time from analog and digital clocks to the nearest five minutes, using a.m. and
p.m.

Learning Objectives and Assessments:

Learning Objectives Assessment

Students will be able to tell and write time in Students will do a worksheet that deals with
hours and half hours using digital and analog both analog and digital clocks. They will
clocks circle the digital time that is shown on the
analog clock. The clock shows time at the
hour, or half hour.
Students will be able to tell and write time As a whole group we will go over and fill out
from analog and digital clocks to the nearest a worksheet that goes over the minute and
five minutes, using a.m. and p.m. hour hand on the clock as well as filling out
all the clock numbers. On the back of this
worksheet we will also count by 5’s to write
the 5-minute intervals around the clock and
discuss how every number on the clock
represents 5 minutes.

Resources: (List materials, include any online or book references and resources)

● Powerpoint
● Video
● Time worksheet 1
● Time worksheet 2
● Practice analog clocks
● Pencils
● Crayons

Plan for set-up/distribution/cleanup of materials:

● I will pass out the first worksheet that we will fill out together as a class
● I will then pass out the practice analog clocks to practice with
● After practicing with those I will pass out the final worksheet
● At the end of the lesson students will put both worksheets in their homework folder to
bring home at the end of the day
● I will come around and collect the analog clocks

Step by Step plan (numbered):

1. Lesson beginning: I will begin by asking students by a show of hands who has learned
about time before. I will then hold up the analog clock and ask if anyone has this kind of
clock at home, or if anyone has ever seen one before. I will then play the video to
introduce students about what we will be learning about today
2. After the video I will pass out the first worksheet. Together we will identify the hour
hand and minute hand on the clock and color them to tell the difference. Then we will
write in the numbers on the clock. This will be done as a whole group as I display it on
the document camera and have students follow along. After this is completed we will flip
over the worksheet to the other side and discuss how there are 60 minutes in an hour, and
how each number on a clock represents 5 minutes. We will then count by 5’s to write the
5-minute intervals around the clock. This will also be done in the same whole group
style.
3. Once this worksheet is completed I will hand out the practice analog clocks to allow
students to practice moving the hour and minute hand around the clock to gain a better
understanding. After this I will pass out the next worksheet.
4. This worksheet will be done independently after I explain it. We will talk about how time
is displayed on the analog and digital clock. We will do the first one together then
students will work independently to circle the digital time that is shown on each analog
clock.
5. If students finish this early there is a backside where they can practice writing in the
digital time under more analog clocks.
6. Closing Activities: We will finish by going over the worksheet and then practicing
making different times with the analog clocks and I will ask students to show their
clocks.

Key Questions (that you will ask):

● What is an analog clock?
● What is a digital clock?
● Which hand is the hour hand?
● Which hand is the minute hand?
● How many minutes are in an hour?
● What does each number on the clock represent?

Key Vocabulary
● Analog Clock
● Digital Clock
● Minute hand
● Hour hand
● Minute
● Hour

Logistics:
● Timing:
○ Lesson Beginning: 5 minutes
○ Video: 3 minutes
○ Worksheet 1: 15 minutes
○ Analog Clock Practice: 10
○ Worksheet 2: 15 minutes
○ Closure: 5 minutes
● Transitions:N/A students stay at desks the entire time
● Classroom Management: I will keep students engaged and paying attention by asking
questions. Students will stay at their desks for most of the lesson. While watching the
video those that are in the back row are allowed to sit on the floor if needed to see better.
While students follow along to the worksheet I will do things like asking them to hold
their tools up to make sure everyone is paying attention. While working independently I
will be walking around to see how students are doing and who may need help.

Differentiation Notes

● Content: All students will have the same content

● Process: All students will have the same process. However, I will be walking around the
classroom to ensure that multiple students are staying focused and on task while we work
on the worksheet together. If students need to see better or need to sit on the floor to
focus better they can.
● Product: All students will have 2 worksheets completed by the end of the lesson. If some
students finish early they can do extra practice of matching digital and analog time that is
on the back of the second worksheet. After that they can practice making time with the
analog clock.
