Administrative Information Systems
Administrative Information Systems
Registration Systems – the client registration system is critical to the effective operation
of many other systems within the healthcare setting.
• used to collect and store client identification and demographic data that are
verified and updated per visit
• used for client care and billing purposes
• data can be shared with clinical systems
Scheduling Systems – allows scheduling of clients and resources efficiently
• schedule patient’s appointment
• increased staff productivity
• increased patient’s satisfaction
Contract Management System – provides invaluable assistance to organizations to better
manage their resources and improve efficiency
• manage third party payers as well as vendors and various suppliers
• CM software provides the visibility and control that allow organizations to
negotiate better contracts, ensure that suppliers meet their contractual obligations,
track compliance, save money and accelerate the cycle times from sourcing
through contract. – Avery,2006
Decision Support System – aid in and strengthen the viable options using the information
of the organization or a field to facilitate decision making and overall efficiency
• provides analysis and advice to support a choice
• final decision rests on the practitioner
• CDS provides clinicians with knowledge or specific information that is
intelligently filtered or presented at appropriate times to enhance health and
healthcare. – Kamamioto & Lobch, 2007
• Types
o Off the shelf software
Commercially available
Generic in features
Cost of development and testing by developer
o Homegrown software
Developed in house
No commercially available fits specific needs
Cost of development, testing and interoperability is shouldered
A 2005 systematic review (quantitative analysis) of 70 studies by Kawamoto et al.
found... "Decision support systems significantly improved clinical practice in 68% of
trials." The CDSs features associated with success include the following:
1. the CDSs is integrated into the clinical workflow rather than as a separate log-in
or screen.
2. the CDSs is electronic rather than paper-based templates.
3. the CDSs provides decision support at the time and location of care rather than
prior to or after the patient encounter.
4. the CDSs provides (active voice) recommendations for care, not just assessments.
Expert Systems – use artificial intelligence to model a decision that experts in the field
would make.
• Artificial intelligence encompasses such diverse activities as game playing,
automated reasoning, natural language, automatic programming, machine
learning, robotics and vision, software tools, modeling human performance, and
expert systems for complex decisions
• Convey the concept that the computer has made the best decision based on criteria
that experts would use
•
