Low Sulphur Oils - Rev2

This document discusses using low sulfur fuels such as MGO, ULSFO, LSMGO, and ULSMGO in Oilon pressure jet burners. It notes some pumps are suitable down to certain viscosity levels and operating pressures. It provides recommendations for adjusting burners like changing nozzles when switching fuels, as well as installing overflow valves and keeping ball valves open or closed based on the fuel used.

USE OF OILON PRESSURE JET BURNERS WITH DISTILLATE MARINE HEATING

FUELS
Nearly all Oilon pressure jet light fuel oil and heavy fuel oil burners are suitable for low sulphur fuels (MGO,
ULSFO, LSMGO, ULSMGO and equivalent fuels), but there are some limitations. The operation viscosity
may be below the value recommended by the pump maker. On the other hand some low sulphur fuels may
require additional heating and therefore it might not work properly in a light fuel oil burner. All other parts like
nozzles, valves etc. are suitable for above mentioned fuels.

Low viscosity oils have lower lubrication properties. When the viscosity is reduced, the lubrication properties
are reduced and the lifetime of the pump will be reduced accordingly.

Please check suitable pump types and pressure settings from following tables.

The pump type can be checked from technical passport.

Pump type Viscosity information

2
Suntec TA gear pumps 2.2 mm /s up to 30 bar atomizing pressure
Lower viscosity will reduce the lifetime of the pump.
2
1.25 mm /s up to 20 bar atomizing pressure
2
Suntec TAR gear pumps 2.0 mm /s up to 30 bar atomizing pressure
Lower viscosity will reduce the lifetime of the pump.
2
1.25 mm /s up to 20 bar atomizing pressure
2
Suntec E6 and E7 gear pumps 2.8 mm /s up to 30 bar atomizing pressure
Lower viscosity will reduce the lifetime of the pump
2
1.25 mm /s up to 15 bar atomizing pressure
2
HP PON and UHE gear pumps 1.5 mm /s up to 30 bar atomizing pressure

Check typical pressure setting levels from manual (guidance). In some cases the combustion result
may be good, even the pressure is not within typical pressure range.

Changing from HFO to low viscosity MGO/LSMGO/ULSMGO, which doesn’t require heating

If the burner initial setup is made for HFO and burner is not re-adjusted, when changing from
HFO to MGO/LSMGO/ULSMGO, the O2 level in flue gas rises.
For optimal combustion result, burner should be re-adjusted when changing fuel from HFO to
MGO/LSMGO/ULSMGO and vice versa.

Possible risks and problems, when using MGO/LSMGO/ULSMGO

o Low viscosity wears down the atomizing oil pump faster than MDO or HFO
o Low viscosity may cause accidental oil leakages. The risk of accidental leakage can be
significantly reduced by limiting the internal oil circulation during pre-purge period, when
running a fuel, which doesn’t require heating
After the burner internal oil pipes are flushed from HFO, the internal circulation before
start is not necessary, when firing a fuel, which doesn’t require heating. When fuel oil
heater is off, internal circulation can be blocked, by blocking the main valves from opening
in pre-purge phase.
o If the burner misfires more than once! Do not try to restart without checking the actual
cause of misfire! In each unsuccessful start, small amount of oil is been spilled in the
furnace and the risk of furnace explosion rises.
o Burners’ internal oil circulation heats up the oil and the oil viscosity goes lower. The
internal oil circulation is at its highest, when the burner is running minimum load. The
affects of heat generation can be reduced by installing overflow valve to burner return line
and by keeping drilled ball valve open. Drilled ball valve can be kept open, when firing fuel,
which doesn’t require heating, if the overflow valve is installed to return line. Note! Keep
drilled ball valve closed when firing heavy fuel oil!

Things to remember when changing from HFO to a fuel, which doesn’t require heating
o Switch off burner preheater, heating cartridges and trace heating (Note! some
MGO/LSMGO/ULSMGO may require heating). Flush or/and start burner with
MGO/LSMGO/ULSMGO, before HFO solidifies in burner internal pipeline.
o Adjust the atomizing pressure to recommended level and change the nozzle, or/and
adjust the air/oil ratio. If the burner is not correctly adjusted, unstable combustion may
occur.
o Use oil cooler, if needed.

Recommendations
o Install additional overflow (shown in diagram 1) valve in burner return oil line. Set the
pressure to ~1 bar.
o Open drilled ball valve, when firing MGO/LSMGO/ULSMGO, which doesn’t require
heating. Do not open the drilled valve, unless you have installed the overflow valve in
return line, the overflow valve will hold the feed pressure to atomizing pump. Remember
to close the drilled ball valve when using HFO.
o Install pump, which is suitable for low viscosity oil
o Prepare with necessary spare parts: bigger nozzle for diesel oil, spare pump
o When using oil, which doesn’t require heating, main oil valves can be kept closed during
pre-purge period. Oil circulation before ignition is not necessary.
