In our society, we citizens are divided by our differences in beliefs, contrasting

opinions, religions, social classes, etc., This phenomenon is also existing in the digital
world, where Information and Communication Technology (ICT) has divided us, in
which there is a growing gap between those who have access to internet and
technology, possesses the wealth to afford the ICT gadgets and services and on the
other hand are those who do not have access to technology and required wealth to
acquire the gadgets and the digital services in which is termed as the Digital Divide.

Various factors, such as different initial settings of countries or simply the

geographical location of a place, can generate a digital gap. For example, people in
cities have more access to technology, whilst those in isolated or rural areas have less
or no access at all. Another reason is a lack of access to ICT as well as information and
knowledge, physical disabilities, gender, and cultural behavioral attitudes with regards
to technology. The occurrence of the digital divide has a variety of consequences and
impacts on people in society. This includes a lack of communication as there is an
absence of internet access and mobile phone coverage in remote and rural areas.
Another impact is it becomes a barrier to education and knowledge wherein
unavailability of access to technology prevents others from accessing the internet for
more information; students who have access to the internet increase their skills and
knowledge. Furthermore, social differences in terms of digitalization are also an impact
to those people who don’t have access to technology, as a lack of technological
expertise may be a barrier to employment which may negatively influence the worker,
and those with high ICT skills tend to receive better paid jobs.
